Hà's life is affected by where and when she's living . It's affected Hà's life because she had to be extra safe ,she lost friends and family , also many people including Hà was poor. Where and when Hà was living affects her because it was in Saigon Vietnam during the time of the Vietnam War . Evidence that shows that Hà had to be extra safe is on page four , where it states that she couldn't jump rope after dark because of the soldiers and also went her mother had to hide the kids under the bed when they heard the whistles. Do you know what Refugees are what they do how they live and how they survive. Refugees are people that have to leave there home all because of war, they have to leave and find new ones far away. Before war happened in Vietnam Ha was different she was sneaky because when she went to get groceries she would by fried dough for herself, and she was mean because when she would hide her brothers sandals when she got mad at them. The title of the book makes you wonder a little by the words inside out and back again, the author Thanhha Lai had a good idea for making this book for a history lesson. Refugees like Ha and her family turn back again when they find better home like Ha she stared understanding more.

Thanhha Lai wrote a novel called “Inside Out & Back Again” which is about a little girl and her family in Vietnam, the little girl is named Ha. Ha and her family are in the city of saigon, the story takes place during the Vietnam war and because of the Vietnam war her and her family’s lives are turned “inside out”. But later everything comes “back again” This story relates to the universal refugee’s life because they themselves are turned “ Inside out and back again”.

Ha has changed in where she lives. She and her family decided that because of the war they needed to get out of the country and go to America. So Ha and her family went on a ship and had to face a lot of challenges on the boat.

Ha and her family are on board the ship for weeks, sailing toward Thailand. Food and water are scarce, but the people on board are cautiously hopeful about what could happen next. Ha and her siblings use the time to practice their English. Salvation appears in the form of an American naval vessel, which distributes food and supplies, and tows the boat to Guam where a refugee camp has been established. There, Ha learns about how most of the refugees are either going to France, Canada, or the United States. Ha and her family decide to travel to the United States. They are sponsored by a Southern farmer named Mr. Johnston, who helps the family to settle in Alabama and looks after their interests. Ha’s mother insists they assimilate into American society as quickly as possible, shutting out their old lives

Ha’s life as a refugee is a life experience is something that only the strong can go through, and her entire family made it. When refugees flee home, it is because of fear that their family will be torn apart by the war when they leave home, family, friends, memories, basically the perspective of the person is leaving what they desired. Then when they finally do find a home, (not all), they are greeted with new challenges, one of many is that acceptance in their new home, some people probably don’t want to make a living in their new home, “But life happens wherever you are, whether you make it or not”. But when people turn “inside out” they feel empty inside and everything is useless, they have to start over from square one and become “back again”. When they become happy again and accept what has happened to them, so they can move forward in life. This book is mostly about a girl with her family who was in a war, so they left of fear of being torn apart by the war because they will be safer than where they are at in the moment, Saigon Vietnam, but are greeted with challenges in the Alamba U.S.A.

She like following what she is told to do, and she thinks her way is best. Lives of refugees are turned inside out when they are forced to flee and find a home because they go through many struggles to find a home. Stated in the article “Refugees: Who, Where and Why”, “People become refugees for many reasons. The number one reason is war (Gevert 12).” War is one of the many reasons refugees are caused to flee their homes, which also means it is the cause of any difficulties they go through.

Numerous numbers of refugees around the world identical to Ha and her family faced individual struggles that cause them to have the feeling of inside out, such as having difficulty of not know the language barrier. For example, Ha had a difficult time learning English upon arriving in America. “Whoever invented English must have loved snakes” (Lai, 118) At school now in America, Ha is learning a new language, it is roughly hard for her sometimes to make words plural and difficult to establish the new ways of her new life. Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai, has many dynamic characters and Ha, the main character, is one of them. She is a ten year old girl living in Saigon with her mother and three older brothers during a time at causing her to become more determined and mature. To begin, Ha becomes determined in many more ways than one. Throughout her life She wants to be treated fairly too her brothers, she wants to do what they are doing like tapping her to the tile floor first “But last night I pouted when Mother insisted one of my brothers must rise first this morning to bless our house because only male feet can bring luck”(2).

Ha, had to overcome challenges going to America and feeling inside out like many refugees Ha faced discrimination and bullying as refugees live longer in their countries they learn to overcome the challenges feeling back again. Refugees struggle to fit in with their appearance “They pulled my arm hair they threw rocks at me they promised to stop on my chest”(Lai 151). The kids are bullying/discriminating Ha because she's different and they haven’t been around kids like her. Not just in the USA are refugees discriminated for religion or appearance “They tried to kill me because of my religion.” (Arthur). An Individual refugee essentially requires protection when settling in a new nation. Human rights are meant to be accepted and appreciated by the individual refugee. Many of the refugees faces a similar obstacle when migrating to new nation such as the lack of language. The case explores a 11 year old girl that faces the heartbreaking of her father’s death, her uncles beating that lead her to leave her own country to settle in a new safe nation.

Refugees turn ‘inside out’ but, then ‘back again’ once they have gotten used to their new life in their new home. In the informational text, “Refugee and Immigrant Children: A Comparison” it says “It is not only natural that refugee children, along with their families go through a process of mourning those losses.” (Faneto and Cloak,590) Ha and her family are going through loss some individual and some as a family just like other refugees such as the loss of her Father.
