While humanity keeps on changing and improving due to humans being able to learn and grow, is it really progression or just an endless loop with lots of hatred and a little bit of forgiveness? Humankind throughout history appear to make similar actions of showing injustice to those that are different so the minority faces hardships, unfairness, and cruelty. Why does this occur when there is one element that joins all of us together? In one form or another, we face some sort of injustice. Forms of injustice can be as formal as political or economic injustice or more personal like injustice being gender-based, racial, or religious. In Sing, Unburied, Sing, and Of Mice and Men, Pop and George’s actions and reaction towards the characters who experience …show more content…
For example, when a unjust crime forces Pop in entering Parchemen for a crime that was unjustly made, he describes how “I knew what that was to be made a animal [but when Richie came] I found myself… worrying about him… [and at times] I tried to help him. Tried to break his line when he was hoeing, dig a little deeper in his grooves. Reach over and clean his plants better when we was harvesting...And for a while, a few months, it worked. I was able to save him, kept him from getting beat” (69,75). Pop’s response to the social injustice that Richie faces depicts his selflessness towards those in need even though he, himself experienced the same cruelty of the discrimination. His actions and reactions to the racism that he and Richie suffered illustrates that any person can make a difference in an individual’s life through small and simple ways of providing aid. One smile, one act of service can create a bond that last a lifetime. As a result of Richie escaping from Parchmen, Pop knew that the guards would tortue Richie until he dies so Pop answers Richie’s question of going home by responding “Yes, Richie. I'm a take you home… And then I took the shank I kept in my boot and I punched it one time into his neck [and] held him till the blood stopped spurting. Him looking at me, mouth open. A child. Tears and snot
In John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, George and Lennie arrive on a ranch where they are told to work. Through experiences with the other ranch hands, many things do not go as expected. This shows the theme of being able to handle plans going awry. Though these issues are not always detrimental or fatal, they were for both Lennie and his acquaintances. In both my personal experience of everything going wrong in a play, and Lennie’s mistakes in Of Mice and Men, the theme of being able to handle a plan going awry stays true throughout.
“Well, you keep your place then, n*****. I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it ain’t even funny” (Steinbeck 81). In the novella, Of Mice and Men, the readers are following the life of Lennie and George, who are migrant workers during the Great Depression. Migrant workers, unlike Lennie and George, primarily travel alone, and they go from job to job. George and Lennie have been together since they were younger, as Lennie would come along with George while he worked, so they had become inseparable. Lennie got them kicked out of many jobs, but they landed a spot as a ranch hand bucking barley. Once they became acquainted with the farm, Lennie and George become friends with a man named Crooks, but before that, they are introduced to the ranch by Candy. As the story progresses, a theme of isolation, discrimination, and loneliness on Candy, Lennie, and Crooks is revealed.
Discrimination have been happening everywhere in the world and as long as anyone can remember. Discrimination is still a problem today. America just had protests dealing with Black Lives Matter and African Americans feel they are still discriminated against and treated differently. The time that the novel Of Mice and Men takes place in is important because during the Great Depression it was hard to find money, so Lennie couldn’t just stay at home while George had to work. They both had to make money to support themselves. Lennie, Crooks, and Curley's wife all face discrimination which greatly impacts their lives.
Within seconds of his scathing condemnation though, Torvald learns that his reputation will not suffer from Nora’s actions and he “forgives” her with an open and willing heart. How could one not crack under such pressure as this? Willy, like Nora, had a dream. Willy dreamt of success: personal success, success in his family life, and success for his sons. For him, salesmanship was the measure of his success; throughout the many flashbacks he would often exaggerate his sales, boosting his image in the eyes of his children. He felt as though his place as a meaningful member of society hinged on this success. Therefore, he would only admit his shortcomings to Linda, who understood and never judged him. In the eyes of his young children, Willy could do no wrong: he made top sales records; he was “well-liked,” nothing could defeat him, further adding to his societal pressures (Miller 1.509). Willy also had to deal with the pressure from his brother who had struck diamonds in Africa by mistake, constantly living in that shadow, that stigma as the “little brother” who turned down the chance of a lifetime and instead became a salesman. Pressured to pursue his American Dream, Willy gives himself over to the overwhelming waters of society, drowning himself in its expectations and demands.
black. They say I stink. Well, I tell you, you all of you stink to me"
In the literary work Of Mice and Men, the reader is introduced to the ranch as a world of its own, within which prejudice plays a significant part. The characters in this novel act as a community in a world of their own, having no connections to any other type of society. A strong point, enforced through many examples in the book, is the constant ability of the stronger to overcome the weaker. The prejudices of the majority towards the minority, at the ranch are the white-males, who retain power over the lesser groups of people. This inequality, as well as the influence of the time period, causes discrimination against people of color, women, and those that are disabled, either mentally or physically.
Discrimination if often based on many qualities and abilities. Some of the most clearly shown examples in John Steinbeck’s novel Of Mice and Men are gender, age and racial discrimination. The victims of these types of discrimination are Curley’s wife, who is unhappy and bitter about her life, Candy, the old, disabled swamper and Crooks, the black stable buck. Throughout the novel, these three characters face many hardships because they are harshly judged and often misunderstood.
In the novella, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the diverse set of characters individually handle oppression on a daily basis. For these characters, racist, sexist and degrading remarks are normal for the time period (early 1900’s). The story is about two men, Lennie and George, trying to find work in a troubling economic time while also trying to overcome Lennie’s mental handicap. They also meet other people that have to overcome their own “setbacks”. The author shows oppression of the characters through their effect on others, actions, and their dialogue.
Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “It is not possible to be in favor of justice for some people and not be in favor of justice for all people.” In The USA we fight for justice and liberty for all everyday. Justice in America isn’t always served to everyone. In the fictional story, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck it shows how justice is served and how it isn’t. A guest speaker, Sgt. Deondra parks also came to talk to about serving justice to everyone no matter what they might put you through. Lastly, In the song Same Love by Macklemore it shows how justice and liberty is shown. Justice and liberty for all is promoted in Of Mice and Men, The experience of Sgt Parks, and Same Love.
Equality has been a hot topic in the past century. Women and African-Americans have not had equality for that long. Women gained quality in the 1920s and African-Americans gained equality in the 1960s. It took them a lot of time to get those rights and dream in Of Mice and Men, show equality must be worked for. In Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck utilizes the characters of Crooks and Curley’s wife to illustrate that equality takes a long time to come by.
History is full of examples of how power affects people's behaviors towards others. Well known examples in history include Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler. Kim Jong-Il, Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein are more recent examples of the negative abuse of power. In the novella Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, a common theme throughout the story is the misuse of power. Steinbeck uses the characters Curley’s wife and Crooks to teach the reader that people who possess less power are treated in a more demeaning fashion, but also treat others the same way in search of gaining power.
The novel “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck, shows that imbalances of power in one’s society can lead to varying conflicts within said society. In the time that this takes place, the Great Depression that is, money is everything. That which has money has power. Curley has money being the boss’ son and therefore more power. Curley treats others however he wants because of the imbalance of power tipping towards him. Lennie and Curley have an imbalance of physical and social power. When they brawl, Lennie has more physical power yet Curley has more power over the final outcome which in turn leads to a conflict. Eventually, one finds that Lennie himself has an imbalance of power with himself which causes a great conflict in the story.
This chapter undertakes to explicate the way that distinction operates at a key moment in African American cultural history. Black art is the aesthetic and spiritual sister of the Black power. The Black arts and the Black power concept both relate to the African Americans for self-determination and nationhood. It has been widely held that the fundamental characteristic of Black arts poetry is its virulent antiwhite rhetoric. Houston Baker stated, the influential black critic J. Saunders Redding disparaged the Black Aesthetic as representative of a discourse of “hate”, a “native racism in reverse”. The personality of African-American culture is established in the authentic experience of the African-American individuals, including the Middle
