Inherit The Wind PEA Political Spectrum Prompt
For Bertram Cates, Henry Drummond, and Matthew Harrison Brady, I would put them on different Political Spectrums. First, I would put Bertram Cates on the left side of the spectrum, as a Liberal, because of his beliefs, willingness to accept change, and his opinion on moral issues. Bertram Cates believes and teaches Evolution, which goes against the law of teaching the story of Creation, written in the bible. In the first scene of the movie, Bert is observed teaching the theory of Evolution by some policeman, in which he is arrested for going against the story of Creation. This shows that as Bertram’s role of a Liberal, he has no religious values and believes in whatever he wants too. Also, Bertram has the ability to accept change more, because he is convinced that Evolution disproves Creation. In scene 1 of the movie he says, “Scientists have high beliefs that Evolution disproves the story of Creation, which has lead me to have the same belief.” Bert is an open-minded person, which is a characteristic of a Liberal. Lastly, Bertram believes that the government should have no involvement in his beliefs. On page 115 of the book, Bert tells the

Henry is a moderate because he is open to both sides. Henry says at the end of the movie, “The Bible is a great book, but man should keep their right to believe in whatever they shall want too.” This shows that he is unbiased and open to both sides of the argument. Also, while Henry is arguing for Bertram, he still keeps in mind of the word of the Bible. “Listen to this: Genesis 4:16. “ And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod on the East of Eden,”” stated on page 90. Henry has studied both of the opposing arguments and this is what a moderate does in politics. Henry Drummond shows his profile of a Moderate because of his unbiased
This year as a class we have read 2 different books. One of these books was at the beginning of the school year called “lorde of the flies.” In this book there are a bunch of kids stranded on an island due to a plane crash with no parental supervision. You see how different you are in a life where there are no rules and how savage you become when you put on a mask. These boys tested each other and themselves and at the end of the day got some people killed. The other book we read this year was Hamlet. This book was about a young prince whose father had died and his mother marries his uncle soon after. Hamlet was still grieving as his mother and uncle are having their incestual wedding. Hamlet also sometimes sees his father as a ghost and the ghost tells him that Hamlet's uncle killed the king (who is the ghost speaking to him) and this causes only cauas. Hamlet too feels alone like the boys in lord of the flies and begins doing things he never thought he would. These books opened my eyes to how different people become depending on the situation they are in and depending on how ruthless you are willing to be. I know now that if something bad happens to learn how to forgive the way Hamlet couldn’t and to let go of things.
Jonathan Edwards is a pastor at a church. Both Henry and Edwards used their position to help them persuade their listeners. Their position showed power and with power by saying in paragraph 5, “Let everyone that is Christ now wake up” telling his congregation, for sake of themselves. As for Henry, he uses his power within him by being elected, which is something the convention should be mindful when listening to his speech. In his speech to the Virginia Convention, according to paragraph 11, Henry says “we are not weak” then he goes on to say “we make a proper use of the means which the God of our nature hath placed in our power.” By saying this Henry shows that he stands for all of them in his position and makes his power known that he means only business for his freedom. While knowing Patrick Henry and Jonathan Edwards both give their thoughts and opinions freely according to “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” and “ Speech to the Virginia Convention”. They are very powerful and persuasive to their congregation and to their convention all while influencing
Henry first displayed ethos by respecting opposing viewpoints among the hostile crowd in the House of Burgesses. He states, “But different men often see the same subject in different lights; and, therefore, I hope that it will not be thought disrespectful to those gentlemen, if, entertaining as I do opinions of a character very opposite to theirs, I shall speak forth my sentiments freely and without reserve” (Henry 226). Patrick Henry recognizes the magnanimity of the situation at hand and is cautious towards the emotions that he could evoke from his hostile audience. To disarm the crowd and ease them into his speech, Henry displays respect towards the other arguments and gains a similar respect and attention towards his own argument in
Whether you are a believer in the Bible, Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, or both. Inherit the Wind is a play that expands on the importance of being able to accept both in society. Bertram Cates was a teacher of Hillsboro, Tennessee, who was arrested for teaching Darwin’s Theory of Evolution to his biology class. Anything that is said against the creation of man and the Bible was considered a crime. The prosecutor of the case was Matthew Harrison Brady, a beloved politician and religion enthusiast. Mr. Brady had a variety of characteristics, positive and negative ones, which greatly influenced the outcome of the case. He can efficiently manipulate and influence the opinions of others, he was overconfident, and ignorant. Despite these inferior

She believes anything he says because he is a mighty man with a lot of power. He has now persuaded her into thinking the worst of Henry Drummond by stating his cruel thoughts about him. Brown also starts to become very erratic in the ways he is preaching. He holds a religious meeting where he is publicly shaming Bertram Cates, a tenth-grade biology teacher charged with teaching evolution. Brown says ”Strike down this sinner, as thou didst Thine enemies of old!”(66).
The way and rate that people mature at can be directly attributed to the values and beliefs of the society that surrounds an individual. It is undeniable that society’s perspective on many controversial issues will generally be adopted by the younger generations in a given society. Moreover, the exposure to significant events, coupled with the major influence of family members, can have an enormous impact on how an individual matures. Additionally, family members greatly help each other develop into moral adults by instilling in each other values that will ultimately determine an individual’s character. In Harper Lee’s timeless classic, To Kill a Mockingbird, the constant reiteration of Atticus Finch’s values, in
In the novel To Kill A Mockingbird a major theme is the loss of innocence. Whether from emotional abuse, racial prejudice or learning, Boo, Tom, and Scout all lose their innocence in one sense or another. The prejudice that each character endures leads to their loss. Through the responses of Boo, Tom, and Scout, Harper Lee shows how each character responded differently to their loss of innocence.
Are Historical Narratives A Better Representation Of History? Historical narratives are a different way of presenting history rather than reading the usual textbook. Historical narratives represent and tell the story of a specific part of history instead of many events all within a time period in one book, which is a textbook.
At the beginning of Henry’s speech, he was aware of the fact that not every delegate supported his idea of fighting British rule; some wanted America to make peace and reconciliation with Britain. He politely acknowledged “different men often see the same subject in different lights”[5] and that his aim was to express his sentiments unreservedly regarding the debate on whether Americans should fight for their freedom or remain enslaved by the British rule. Henry hoped his fellow delegates would not see his sentiments as disrespectful. He also told his audience that they had a responsibility towards America and God to seek the truth and that if he held back his opinions for fear of offending others; he would be
At the beginning of the film, The Great Debaters, Henry Lowe is seen as conceited, philandering and impulsive. However, during the course of the movie we find out that Henry is just a kid who has been through a lot including watching his parents become slaves to the white. He has seen things and is at lost about how to deal with it and so he drinks his problems away. Through Professor Tolson’s lessons and training, He becomes more mature and responsible. Towards the end of the movie, Henry gives up his position as leader speaker to James Farmer Junior which to me shows a tremendous growth on the part of Henry because he believes in James Jr. even though the last time James Jr. spoke in a debate, they lost.
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view . . . until you climb into his skin and walk around in it”. Discuss this quote from Atticus in relation to 3 characters from the novel.
The monarch butterfly, as known as Danaus plexippus, is often called the milkweed butterfly because its larvae eat the milkweed plant. They are also sometimes called "royalty butterflies" because their family name comes from the daughter of Danaus, ruler of Argos. There are many other interesting facts about this butterfly including its anatomy and life cycle, where the butterfly lies on the food chain, the migration from Canada to Mexico, why the butterfly is being threatened, and lastly, what is being done to help the butterfly.
Hamlet's "fall of a sparrow" speech, Shakespeare's well-known citation of Matthew 10:29, and Ecclesiastes 3:15 is a summary of God's view of time: "That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God required that which is past" (King James Translation). The Preacher first states that the past is the present, a familiar perception, but then makes the paradoxical claim that the future has already happened in the past (Carson 1995).
