Henry Drummond is forced to make decisions in the play to help his case in defending Bertram Cates. Some believe Drummond is not the real hero of the play. Henry Drummond is the real hero of the play because he defends a man who did not break any laws , he goes against a man who persecutes based on personal beliefs, and he ends up doing well for Cates in the courtroom. When Cates needed Drummond the most, he came through. When the conclusion from the jury is made, the judge says, “The court deems it proper--- He glances at the Mayor--- to sentence Bertram Cates to pay a fine of--- He coughs--- one hundred dollars” (Lawrence and Lee 115). In saying this, the Judge means that they are only sentencing Cates to pay 100 dollars. Brady is bewildered at the fact that the only punishment is a fine of 100 dollars. Brady wanted jail time for Cates, but he did not get his want. For that reason, Drummond did very well for his partner. Some opponents may argue that because Cates was still found guilty. That claim is right, but irrelevant. Although Cates was found guilty, Brady was still in disarray at the decision. After he hears the verdict, he pleads, “My dear friends. . . ! Your attention please!” (Lawrence and Lee 118). In claiming this, Brady is hastily trying to regain the crowd’s attention. He is so appalled at the fact that the sentence was so easy on Cates. Brady is not happy with the verdict, causing Drummond to have done well for
