Specific Purpose - To inform my audience about hybrid vehicles.
Central Idea - Hybrid car history and different platforms of hybrid vehicles.
Introduction
I. A hybrid car is a vehicle with more than one power source such as a small internal combustion engine and an electric motor.
II. Most hybrids only use gasoline when needed. The electric motor, powered by a stack of rechargeable batteries, is the primary workhorse for propulsion under low-speed driving.
III. When you think of a hybrid vehicle, you may find yourself thinking Toyota Prius. 1. Toyota Prius was the first mass produced hybrid vehicle.
IV. According to Toyota Motor Corp. a hybrid system combines different power sources to maximize each

1. A Mild-Parallel hybrid vehicle has an internal combustion engine that is equipped with an electric motor, both in parallel configuration, meaning they both provide propulsion to move the vehicle forward. This configuration allows the gasoline engine to be shut off while coasting, braking or being at a complete stop yet will restart with minimal delay.
A. Some mild hybrids will also be equipped with regenerative braking that will essentially charge the battery packs under braking.
B. Mild hybrids are not capable of exclusively operating on the Electric motor.
2. A Series hybrid platform, sometimes referred to as range-extending electric vehicles (REEV) incorporate a configuration by design to be operated mostly by the battery, but will have an ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) to recharge the battery when enduring a long drive.
B. Series hybrid’s only have electric motors to provide propulsion while maintaining an exceptionally high power to weight ratio providing enough torque over a broad range of speeds.
C. The gasoline engine drives an electric generator which charges the battery bank at which point the electric motor use the power from the battery bank to drive the vehicle.
Conclusion
In conclusion today I have informed you all about the first existence of the hybrid vehicle which was created by Ferdinand Porsche, known as the Elektromobil. The common types of configurations that are available, which include
The author first explains what a hybrid is, stating “A hybrid is a cross between two established varieties of plant, animal… or technology.” She introduces the hybrid vehicle, a new form of technology that stands as a possible answer for a vehicle that is both energy preserving and safer for the environment. Before she dives into details of how the vehicle works, she enlightens the reader on what the article is about and the objective of the hybrid vehicle. Students enrolling in an engineering course in a post-secondary institution will be more
Hybrid vehicles are continuously gaining popularity in the general public. With the growing societal concerns about green revolution and also achieving significant reduction in fuel consumption, hybrid vehicles are considered satisfactory in performance. They have become so popular that certain tax incentives have been offered by the government on hybrid vehicles. Due to their better performance compared with gas powered vehicles, we present the thesis of our paper as follows:
Research and outline the function, engineering principles and operation of the following parts of a Hybrid Electric Vehicle. Include suitable diagrams to aid your explanations.
A number of hybrid vehicles have been built and tested since 1980. Some of these vehicles have impressed analysts with their performance and low levels of exhaust and petroleum consumption. Interest in hybrid vehicles jumped in late 1993 with the announcement of funding for
What is a hybrid car? Basically, it 's a normal, fuel efficient car that has two motors an electric motor and a gasoline powered motor. It also uses a special system to store braking energy in an onboard battery. But why buy a hybrid? Why not buy a traditional gas or electric powered car? Keep in mind, one of the basic rules of science is the more
Two motors in a vehicle have some strength and weaknesses. During idle the electric motor use no energy, they turn off. When at low speeds the battery motor uses less gas than a standard gas motor. Gas motors are much better at faster speeds due to the power it can give out and how heavy gas motors are. An example would be during traffic or rush hour the battery powered motor prevents excessive gas usage. People enjoy a speedy and powerful feel while driving, so when the car speeds above 40 MPH the gas motor kicks in. The gas motor in the hybrids charge the electric motors. A lot of electric vehicles owners get stuck because they can’t charge their car just out of range of charging. Using a hybrid car completely rids of that issue because the gas motor automatically turns on when the battery is running low on power. Hybrids do not need to be plugged in at all. One of the big issues with hybrid vehicles is the price. With two motors and all the charging systems to manage them as well as a way to produce power
Today I am going to be covering one of my favorite subjects which is cars. I have picked five hybrid cars, that are great in their own right. But I will be covering their advantages and disadvantages. I will also be picking my personal favorite, by usefulness to my family. I will also be covering the political situation between the US, and oil producing countries. I will also be covering how this technology will influence world politics. Include an analysis of economic issues such as production, supply, and trade.
The purpose for this research report is so that students can familiarize themselves with hybrid electric vehicles and their features that make them unique in contrast to other vehicles. This report will educate the reader on the “BMW i8’s” vital components such as the engine, battery, and other elements related to electric vehicles. To put into perspective the significant advantage hybrid electric vehicles have over vehicles
According to a November 16, 2004 article written in the parents magazine, hybrid cars are no different from the gas powered car. It can accelerate just as quickly and travel just as fast on the highway and they are just as safe to drive. When the car comes to a complete stop,
General Motors ' Chevrolet Volt is the world’s second production series hybrid-electric vehicle. It has both an electric traction motor and a gasoline engine. Its best feature is that once its 16 kilowatt-hour battery pack is drained, the 1.4 liter 4 cylinder engine switches on. When this happens it does not drive the wheels mechanically like other hybrids, instead it turns a 55 kilowatt generator that provides current to the 111 kilowatt electric motor and powers the front wheels (Voelcker, 2011). According to Fletcher (2011), this is the way diesel locomotives work, but until the Chevy Volt all hybrid cars had used their gasoline engines in parallel with their electric motors to turn the wheels. In this vehicle, the gasoline tank and combustion engine act as backup battery.
The hybrid electric vehicles use a small electric battery to addition a standard engine. It increases fuel efficiency by about 25 percent. The plug-in hybrid electric vehicle is also having the electric motor and the internal combustion engine. It has a larger battery pack, which is charged from the power grid. This battery complements an engine smaller than those that are in hybrid or conventional vehicles. The hybrid and plug-in hybrid both combine an internal combustion engine with a battery and electric motor to increase fuel efficiency. The difference between them is that you can use electricity as a fuel, because plug-ins can recharge from an electric outlet. An extended-range electric vehicle works on the principle charging successively of an internal combustion engine to power an electric generator, the battery system in a linear process — the engine powers a generator, which charges the battery. The last is battery electric vehicles, which are all electric. They do not have internal combustion engine and they have to be plugged into the electric power grid to recharge.
In contrast to series hybrids, parallel hybrids can use two different sources of power simultaneously – an I.C.E. and a battery driven electric motor. The advantage of using a parallel over a series hybrid is that electric motor can be used at low power over short distances (increases fuel economy) whereas the I.C.E can be used over long distances at high power which helps to reduce range anxiety. Examples: Honda Insight, Accord and Civic etc. [6]
Figures of different hybrid models will also be included as well as a table comparing the costs of various hybrids to traditionally fuelled cars. This will help the audience get a sense of the price ranges for hybrid vehicles before they go out and decide to buy one. Finally, a table dealing with the performance specs of hybrids will be added to emphasize certain limitations with these models.
Hybrid cars use both internal combustion engines as well as an electric motor. The electric motor requires no charging source, as electric cars do, as the movement during driving allows for kinetic energy to be produced which in turn, charges the electric motor. This process is known as Regenerative Braking.
The main component of a car would be the power that actually puts the car in motion. To be solely dependent on one power source is not a very good idea as it is not eco-friendly and at the same time not suitable. By 2040, half of all the new cars being sold will be hybrids, according to Exxon Mobile. Hybrid Cars are the cars that uses more than one power sources to run the car. It is usually referred to the Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) which has both the internal combustion engine and electric motors that generates power. One of the main problem with these hybrid cars is that their batteries are extremely heavy and takes up a large amount of space in the car. The concept of Hybrid cars can be a good thing to the environment, but definitely not for the car manufacturer or the customer. Hybrid cars have a convincing amount of weight due to their batteries, even with the existence of lithium-ion batteries. As a solution, Energy Storing Body Panels are used.
