Nowadays, there are many diseases that affect our lives. Some of them are minor and can be treated easily. However, the other diseases are fatal and difficult to be cured. One of the most deadly disease is cancer. Cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells divide without control and can invade nearby tissues. There are many types of cancer and one of the most dangerous one is skin cancer. Skin cancer is a malignant growth of cells in the skin, which leads to swelling of the skin can often be seen with the naked eye. The number of people who die in Sweden as a result of skin cancer is increasing for those who die in road accidents.(7) In the past it was difficult to treat skin cancer, because there was no development method to treat skin cancer. …show more content…
Cisplatin is a chemotherapy drug that is used to treat skin cancer.(1) Cisplatin works by damaging the DNA in cancer cells and stopping them from multiplying.(1) Ciplastin binds with DNA strands, so the cells can't grow and divide.(1) You can take cisplastin through a drip into your arm through blood stream.(1) The nurse puts a small tube into a vein in your hand or arm.(1) If you have had surgery for breast cancer or your lymph nodes the nurse will not put the tube on the same side you had a surgery.(1) You can have cisplatin every three or four weeks as a course of several cycles of treatment, or you may have it each week.(1) Cisplastin has common side effect such as breathlessness, bruising, bleeding gums, kidney damage, and changes to your …show more content…
Radiotherapy uses high energy rays to kill the cancer cells in the area being treated.(5) X-ray beams are directed at the tumor, with no need for cutting or anesthesia.(4) Destruction of the tumor usually requires a series of treatments, administered several times a week for one to four weeks, or sometimes daily for one month.(4) Cure rates range from about 85 to 95 percent, since the technique doesn't provide accurate control in identifying and removing residual cancer cells.(4) Side effect of radiotherapy can cause the skin to become slightly red and sore during the treatment.(6) This will begin to disappear once the treatment is finished.(6) The skin may become crusty and scab over at first.(6) When the scab falls off there will be healthy skin underneath.(6) This area will be more sensitive to the sun in the future.(6) You might have some hair loss if you have radiotherapy to a part of the body that has
Specific Purpose: After listening to my speech the audience will know what skin cancer is, what the three most common forms are, what the risk factors are, and some preventative measures that can be taken to lessen the risk.
They may be applied to bloodstream or directly to a cancer site. Chemotherapy typically refers to the destruction of cancer cells, however some may include antibiotics or other medications to cure an illness or infection. Often, chemo is used alongside other treatments. Physical activity is important and it’s been found that patients who regularly exercise after chemotherapy treatment have a much lower risk of cancer recurrence. Chemotherapy generally has 5 goals; total remission, combination therapy, delay/prevent reoccurrence, slow down cancer progression and relieve cancer symptoms. The objective is to prevent cell division using cytotoxic drugs, to target cancer cells food source, enzymes and hormones that they need in order to grow, and to stop the growth of new blood vessels that supply the tumor. Patients can either receive monotherapy where they’re just given one drug, or combination where the patient receives more than one drug. These courses of chemo can be just a one day treatment or last for a few weeks, it depends on the type and stage of the cancer basically how advanced it
Cancer is a term used for diseases in which irregular cells divide without any control and have the capability to penetrate and infect normal body tissue through the blood and lymph system. Cancer is the second leading cause of mortality in the United States, exceeded barely by heart disease. According to the CDC Cancer Statistics and Data, there were more than 1.45 million people diagnosed with various kind of cancer between 1999 and 2007 and out of those more than 562,000 people died due to cancer (cdc.gov, 2012). Currently there are more than 200 different types of cancer that have been discovered. Cancer could be
“Exposure to tanning beds before the age of 30 increases melanoma risk by 75 percent.” This is a quote on an advertisement in Allure magazine. Tanning beds cause skin to age prematurely. It causes the skin to lose its elasticity and increases skin cancer. Tans are caused by harmful UV radiation from the sun or tanning lamps, and those who have one, have sustained skin cell damage. A person with a hereditary risk of melanoma has a greatly increased risk of developing melanoma during his or her lifetime. There is also an increased risk of pancreatic cancer in families with familial melanoma, but that is rare. Neutrogena published this ad in Allure magazine, July 2015. Their intentions to persuade on the damages of tanning beds and presenting their products to reverse damage previously done were effective.
Chemotherapy drugs work by targeting the cells that divide and grow rapidly throughout the whole body. A downside of this is the fact some good cells are killed off as well as the cancerous ones. Cells that make up hair, skin, some intestine cells, and bone marrow are killed as well causing some of the harsh side effects of chemotherapy ("Chemotherapy: How It Works and How You'll Feel"). Blood cells are other examples of healthy cells that are damaged in chemotherapy treatment. White blood cells are the cells that help protect the body from infections. Too low of a white blood cell count is called neutropenia which is very common with patients who undergo chemotherapy treatment. Patients who are neutropenic do not have enough white blood cells meaning they are susceptible to easily contracting infections. Other blood cells that are impacted in a negative way are the red blood cells and platelets ("What is Chemotherapy?”). A patient will receive chemotherapy treatment in cycles, or treatment periods. A patient will receive chemo one or more days consecutively. Since chemo drugs kills cancerous and good cells, it is important for the patient to rest to allow those good cells to reproduce ("How Chemo Works"). Chemo drugs can be administered in various ways like injections, IV infusions, orally, topically, intra-arterially, or intraperitoneally. Sometimes cancer patients can receive a
Can you imagine a relative having to hear that they have skin cancer? Some patients have no knowledge of why or how they have contracted it. Why would a healthy human be diagnosed with cancer? Beauty products can cause horrible reactions when toxins are used. Cosmetic products are one of the causes of our skin cancer epidemic. People should know how to protect themselves, the stages of skin cancer, and how to detect skin cancer.
I. Introduction A. The most common type of cancer in the United States is Non-melanoma skin cancer. i. Credibility Statement: In fact, the American Academy of Dermatology believes one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. ii. Central Idea/Theme/Thesis: I want to show you how you can beat those odds and not be affected by this condition.
The acute complications of will resolve within two to three weeks after completion of radiation treatment.
Most chemotherapy drugs are given as a course of up to ten sessions (cycles) of treatment. This will depend on the type of drug you are having. At each treatment session you will be given the chemotherapy drug through a drip (infusion). This involves running a liquid containing the drug through a fine tube (cannula) into a vein in your arm. This allows the drug to enter the bloodstream and travel throughout the body.
According to American Cancer Society, in our bodies most people are born with two bean shaped organs, found attached to the back wall of the abdomen, these are called kidneys. As you grow in life your kidneys have multiple jobs, but the biggest job is that they act as a filter in your body. They will take in the blood and filter any substance not needed, such as excess water, salt, and other waste. Once the process of filtering anything bad begins, your kidneys will kick out what we know as urine. American Cancer Society says the kidneys will also “help keep your blood pressure controlled”, by making a hormone called, renin. Need more red blood cells? Don’t worry, your kidneys will make another hormone, known as erythropoietin, sending a message
The American Cancer Society states that cancer is a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. If the spread is not controlled, it can result in death (10). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, cancer is the second leading cause of death. In 2002 alone, half a million Americans will die of this disease. Of this numerical figure, it is estimated that perhaps more than 1,500 individuals a day will die. In addition, one of every four deaths in America is from cancer (9).
When thinking about the prominent organs that make up a human body, one might think of the heart, the lungs or the brain. Rarely do people think about their skin as an organ but it is actually the largest and plays just as an important role in allowing human life as other vital organs. Because it is an organ it can be affected by cancer, a disease where body cells begin to divide at an abnormal rate, crowding out normal cells. Skin cancer is the most prevalent form of cancer in the United States accounting for about 50% of all cancer cases reported annually, according to the American Cancer Society. Although skin cancer has become the most common form of cancer it is also one of the most preventable by following these steps: becoming properly informed, taking the proper preventative measures and knowing your treatment options if you are ever diagnosed.
At the end of my informative speech, my audience will be more knowledgeable about skin cancer and the facts, the major causes, and preventative measures.
It is one of the most common ways in treating cancer, following radiation therapy. Patients with cancer get chemo for many reasons: keeping the cancer from spreading, slow the cancer's growth, kill cancer cells that may spread to other parts of the body, relieve symptoms, and possibly cure cancer. There are different ways chemotherapy can be taken, the most common being through an IV. Other methods are taking it to the mouth in the form of pills, getting a shot similar to a vaccine, or applying directly onto the affected area. How frequent the chemotherapy has to be taken solely depends on the size, location, patient's condition, etc. It can vary from once a day to once a month. The common symptoms after undergoing chemo are hair loss, nausea, fertility problems, and changes in mouth, skin, emotions, memory, and bone marrow (blood cell
The process of radiation therapy uses small amounts of very high-energy radiation to destroy the cancerous cells, making them unable to reproduce. "About 60% of all patients with cancer receive radiation therapy for curative intent, tumor control, or palliation of
