INTRODUCTION

Attention Getter: Let’s look at the Organ Procurement and Transplant Network. They tell us that 116,567 people need a lifesaving organ transplant. Of those, 75,685 people are active the waiting list candidates. There are only 12,212 donors total donors as of 2017.

Tie To Audience: This may not seem like a direct problem for any of you at this moment, but no one can predict when or if a family member or someone one you love, might need an organ transplant. So in that event, wouldn’t you want people like yourself on the donor list?

Credentials: I feel strongly about this topic because there are quite a few people in my own family that struggle with heart issues, one relative even needing a transplant.

Purpose: To persuade my audience to consider becoming organ donors.

Thesis/Preview: We are going to talk about the need for organ donors, they misconceptions surrounding organ donation, and how you can become an organ donor.

Main Point 1: Organ donation is such a simple and selfless action one takes to save the lives of others. Now much of what we will we discuss, also applies to living donation, but we will focus on deceased donation. The number of patients waiting for organs far exceeds the number of people who have registered to become organ donors. According to UNOS, every 10 minutes, a new name is added to the national transplant list. 20 people die everyday from the lack of available organs. Just one deceased person, can save up to 8 lives, 9 lives if you split the liver. Now if you donate tissues, you can improve the lives of up to 50 people! The need for organ donation is growing every minute. You can see why we need to register.

Main Point 2: Myths, we have all heard some, we have all believed some. But right now, I am going to set the record straight about some of the misconceptions surrounding organ donation. Organdonor.gov will tell you about many facts and myths about organ donation. So let’s start with money. I’m sure you have all heard that when a someone donates their organs, their family has to foot the bill for all it. That is completely false.
