INTRODUCTION
I. Picture this, there was a boy at my high school named Adrian. Adrian loved football and even more, he loved all the guys on the team. One year Adrian decided he was going to join the team. He was thrilled to tell all of the guys, but the feelings were not mutual. Instead the guys on the team made fun of Adrian and threw fits. All Adrian wanted was to go to practices, ride the bus to games, and just be apart of the team. The boys did not throw a fit because Adrian was bad at football, they threw a fit because Adrian has a mental disability. Although Adrian did not end up playing football, he eventually played a sport where he was welcomed and appreciated. Adrian fell in love with his new team so much, he wore his track shirt

1. As stated by specialolympics.org, the five figures in a circle symbolize the global presence.
2. The lowered arms recall the time when people were not aware of the talents people with intellectual disabilities had.
3. The straight arms describe equality and outreach.
4. Finally, the raised arms symbolize joy, the joy that has come from this organization.
You know what Special Olympics are, now I’ll explain why they started.
II. Eunice Kennedy Shriver, sister of JFK, was the mastermind behind Special Olympics.
A. Shriver’s sister, Rosemary, had an intellectual disability.
1. The two played all kinds of sports together growing up.
2. But in those days, there were very limited programs for her sister.
B. According to npr.org, Shriver started a summer day camped called “Camp Shriver” in the summer of 1962.
1. This camp was made for children with intellectual disabilities with a goal to explore the children’s skills in sports.
2. This camp grew and led to the first international Special Olympic Games in Chicago, Illinois July 1968. This has grown even more now to over 4.7 million people and over 170 countries.
I explained to you why it started, I’ll explain now how it started in Indiana.
III. Special Olympics came to Indiana in 1969 when Governor Edgar Whitcomb came into office saying it is a great way to help the state, as mentioned on soindiana.org.
A. Special Olympics has grown in great size since 1969 and is now over 12,000 athletes and 10,000
The Olympic games were an athletic competition help in Greece around every four years from 776 B.C.E. In 776 B.C.E, the first olympics were held in Athens where many competitors clashed during the sporting events. The olympics then stopped in 393 C.E. due to Theodosius I’s orders on stopping the olympic events. Later during 1896, the modern olympics began to take place. The olympics were different from the ancient olympics in that the competition was shaped due to social, political, and economic reasons.
Indiana is located in the Mid-West, east of Illinois and west of Ohio. As of 2012, the population of Indiana is 6.537 million people. The motto of Indiana is “The Crossroads of America” because many major interstate highways cross through the state. This opens up travel for many residents of Indiana. Originally, the state flower was the Zinnia flower, but it changed in 1957 due to complaints by farmers and for commercial reasons. The state flower is now the “Peony” which was adopted by the Indiana General Assembly. Indiana was admitted into the union on December 11, 1816 when James Madison signed the act of congress to allow them to become apart of the union.
There are quite a few factors that shaped the modern-day Olympics from 1892 to 2002. Pierre de Coubertin states that he wanted to create the Olympics to spread world peace. He does this by substituting war for friendly sports competitions (doc 1). Of course, there were some bumps in the road while trying to achieve this utopia. Some factors that have changed the Olympics are the allowing of women being able to compete in the Olympics, women’s suffrage, nationalism, wars, and economic conditions (doc 2-7).
In 1741, Jonathan Edwards preached his sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” to his congregation in Enfield, Connecticut. Although the sermon was given to his whole congregation, it was and still is purposefully directed towards unconverted non-Christians. Jonathan Edward’s sermon “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” utilizes provocative diction, unsettling repetition, and belittling metaphors to prove that the only escape from God’s wrath is to convert to Christianity, rather than one depending “upon himself for his own security” (212). Jonathan Edwards challenges his audience to think deeper into his words and converting to Christianity through his provocative diction. In the beginning of the sermon, Edwards says that God possesses
The Olympics come as far as 776 BC, from the ancient Greece, but the first official winter games
Indiana was admitted on December 11,1816 as the 19th state into the Union when President James Madison signed the congressional resolution admitting Indiana to the Union. It’s capital has been at Indianapolis since 1825. Indiana's economy is mainly based on: Cattle, Milk and Eggs. American Actress Anne Baxter and Actor James Dean both are originally from the state of Indiana. As well, Cartoonist Jim Davis who is famously known for Garfield; and US Acres is also from Indiana.
In a nutshell, the Olympics have been massively affected over the time span from 1892 to 2002. Factors that enabled this metamorphosis to take place include: political tensions between countries, economic opportunities that arose, and the social impact through the endorsement of Women’s
The Special Olympic New Mexico (SONM) website is there to guide anyone interested in the foundation to what they need or want to know. SONM goal is to provide children and adults with intellectual disabilities with sports activities, fitness training, and critical skill building that they would not get anywhere else. The SONM website has many great resources for people to do research about the foundation or for people just interested in helping out their cause for good. There also links to help people get connected with the group via Facebook and Twitter. I found this website to be very helpful in finding out the origin of Special Olympics and the events that the New Mexico Branch puts on for their members.
The olympics have been around for ages and almost a thousand years in ancient times. According to many people the olympic of ancient times can be traced back to 776 b.c and goes all the way to 393 A.D. The records state that the games were played in the island of pelops. The Games were dominated by the cult followers of zeus. Religion and the games were also stated to be very close in relation.
“The author spoke of acute bodily illness- of a mental disorder which oppressed him” (pg. 204). Edgar Allan Poe was a very dark and mysterious author but all these stories related to Poe's life in some sort of fashion. House of Usher is about Roderick, his sister and the Narrator (a long time friend of Roderick’s). The siblings live in a large mansion that their family has lived in for centuries. The house is very dark and seems to have a spooky, evil feel to it. Roderick and his sister are ill, he decides to write a letter to his old friend the Narrator and ask him if he would come and take care of him and give him some company. Roderick and sister have a very unhealthy, unnatural and disturbing relationship, that results in the destruction of their lives and family estate.
Founded in 1882, the Olympics is an event that brings the world together in a peaceful way. However, many factors, both positive and negative, have shaped the Olympics depending on the time and the country hosting it. Women, political, and economics are a few factors that have shaped the modern Olympic movement from 1892 to 2002. The establishment and growth of the modern Olympic games has been greatly affected by women.
The issue of school prayer has been a thorny one in the United States for many years now. In the beginning of the nineteenth century readings of the Bible and prayer were common practices in public schools. However prayer was banned in 1962 due to claims that it was violating the First Amendment right that the government was not allowed to support religion, and from then on the Supreme Court has ruled against any and all forms of prayer in schools. Schools cannot however ban students from praying in school and it is against the law to deny a student of his or her own personal beliefs. To this day prayers are said at special events such as ballgames, graduations, and the daily moment of silence, but these are sometimes frowned upon because people find public prayer offensive (At Issue: School Prayer). Praying in schools should be allowed for those who want to do it because it should not be about pleasing those who do or don’t have certain beliefs. It should be up to the student to decide whether he or she wants to pray in school.
First of all, the first modern Olympics were held in Athens, Greece, in 1896. The man responsible for its rebirth was a Frenchman named Baron Pierre de Coubertin. Today, the Olympic Games are the world's largest pageant of athletic skill and competitive spirit.
While there are clear contrasts between the ancient and the modern Olympics there is still the respect for the athlete striving to perform at the highest level. Today, the Olympic Games are the world's largest carnival of athletic skill and competitive spirit. They are displays of nationalism, commerce, and politics. These important elements of the Olympics are not a modern invention, as the first Olympics was in 776 BC in Ancient Greece. After 1503 years, in 1896 the Olympic Games were recreated as what we know today. The Ancient Games were once dedicated to the Olympian God, Zeus Olympios and were staged on the ancient plains of Olympia, which is also how the word ‘Olympics’ originated from. The modern Olympics is the largest international sporting event, which feature both summer and winter sports competitions in which thousands of respectable athletes from over 200 different nations compete against one another. There are clear contrast between the modern and ancient forms of the Olympic Games regarding uniforms, participants, religion, events, politics and the concept of amateurism. However both the Ancient Greeks and the people in the modern world still respect and admire the athletics achievements of the participants making the Olympics the most highly regarded contest in sport.
This week’s discussion dealt with Individuals and Disabilities. Over the years, people who have a “disability" have been subjected to prejudice and more. And the first way to diminish someone is through language, by using words or labels to identify a person as "less-than," as "the others—not like us," and so forth. Once a person has been identified this way, it makes
