In a culture and society that has so many different beliefs, needs, and opinions, where do we find a compromise or should I say where do we come up with a common solution that will satisfy everyone? Gallup data research indicates that public support for Prayer in Schools reached 76% in the mid 2000’s. A more recent study indicates that public support for Prayer in Schools has declined to 61%, which is the lowest it has been since 2001 (Riffikin, 2014).
The Declaration of Independence states that all men are created equal, that they have been endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights such as Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. The Constitution guarantees us certain rights under the Amendments in particular the freedom of choice and freedom of worship. Since we have been given these rights based on citizenship why are we still divided when it comes to education and religion? The last line of the Star Spangled Banners reads O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave. Prayer in schools became an issue in 1960: When Madalyn Murray O'Hair sued the Baltimore MD school system on behalf of her son William J Murray, who was being forced to pray in school. Ultimately, her actions along with the actions of the American Atheist Organization resulted in the Supreme Court ruling of 1962. (Tragically, she and her son disappeared in August of 1995.
