I think it is safe to say that the coach has several roles to perform; with the main objective being to develop the person being coached. This can be achieved by increasing self-confidence, identifying relevant and suitable topics for coaching as well as agreeing the setting of suitable planned tasks to support the learning process.
I have been mentored at several stages in my career and to great effect. I received prerequisite training in leadership early when I joined the Air Force. My civilian career path led me to partner with and mentor several groups of employees who were direct reports. Simultaneously I was receiving training of different types in a variety of areas, such as, Sigma Six, The 8 Habits, and instruction in projects management, employee guidance, customer service, contract negotiations, even Site Start-up and Equipment transitioning. Over the course of a person's career, it is likely that there will be many people who positively impact and make a significant difference in a person's life. Sometimes, these people may even surface before a person begins their career and may appear in the form of teachers, coaches or even parents.
Having a coach in life will positively influence your character and your skills. Also, having a coach doesn’t necessarily mean that your playing on a field. A coach can be anyone from a role model to a parent or guardian, a teacher, a pastor, a mentor, or sometimes even a best friend. One of the most important things for a coach to have is influence, and more important than that is that the influence he has on his players must be positive. As a leader, a coaches job is to better his players on and off of the field. This is done by developing the character of his players through encouragement and helping them understand that the game is more than just about winning. The issues I have decided to address are the lack of formal in group mentors and mentorship opportunities available for female students, faculty, and staff of color. The University has been intentional about recruiting students, faculty and staff of color. Despite these efforts our women of color who work as faculty or staff are the few available mentors available for students. Unfortunately, they are burdened with few professional growth opportunities while juggling work, mentorship requests, as well as providing the minority voice on committees throughout the campus. Subsequently, these women do not have in group mentors to support their growth. While some research shows, professionals who have been mentored are more likely to engage in mentoring, this does not seem hold true for women in general, it is especially untrue for women of color (Wright and Wright 1987). Increased professional expectations, distress and demands are likely the reasons for this difference. With all this, it is clear that women of color are at a significant disadvantage for finding mentors on this campus, and in most male dominated fields.
My Mentor goes by the name of Alexandria. Alexandria is a long time friend of mines who have recently passed away. We meet through my best friend one day when i came over her house and she was sitting there. When i walked in she was looking at me a certain kind of way and i couldn't understand why. Alexandria and I were like two peas in a pod she was my everyday girl my number one supporter in everything i did in life.

1. I want to be a mentor because of how much fun it seems like it is. I also want to help people that need it and maybe might not show it. I can listen to people well and get what they are feeling. Some skills that will make me an effective mentor are video editing, I am good with technology, and how well I can understand people.
To be the best mentor possible, there are a few key elements to consider. Being a good listener is important. When you listen to and understand a mentee’s perspective, you can better help him or her adjust that perception. Identify your and the mentee’s feelings so you can process the meanings behind these feelings and move forward. Listen to what motivates the mentee, what excites him or her, what makes eyes light up and speech confident. Focus on these areas to improve these strengths. When you offer feedback, make sure you are always productive in your confrontation of a weakness. Providing this appropriate information encourages your mentee in areas of weakness and strength. Mentoring is influencing somebody by virtue of one’s manners and expertise. Mentoring involves the influence of a person in terms of his character and knowledge on the life of another person. Mentoring is permanent. Each and every member of the team can have a separate mentor. Coaching is teaching somebody by virtue of one’s experience. A’ becomes the coach of another person ‘B’ when he teaches the nuances of an art or science to ‘B’. Coaching is not permanent. Coaching is normally given to teams as well such as sporting teams. If I were to set up a coaching program, I would advise the CEO to make sure that all mentors are at least two levels above the employee; have a broader experience in the company and the ability to place them into assignments
My philosophy on academic advising is to be a coach and mentor to my students. My main goal of academic advising in coaching and mentoring is to develop my students’ critical thinking skills and problem-solving competences.
I started my career in the military as a naive 17-year-old high school student. My mentor was a hardened Vietnam veteran Platoon Sergeant. For the first day of team discussion, the topic 'Why Mentoring' was discussed. The points that my team raised resonated with the rest of the teams.
