The tragedy that happens in Romeo and Juliet is inevitable because of the many different themes of love, hate, character and destiny. These themes are essential to the play in order to be an interesting play. For example with love you have hatred, with love you would have character and with love you will also get destiny. Romeo’s character is very impulsive. In Romeo and Juliet hate s a big component of the play. This hatred is used in the many fights that end up with someone being killed. “To strike him dead I hold not a sin.” In this quote Tybalt is wanting to kill Romeo because he is a Montague and Tybalt is a Capulet. When most people hear the names Romeo and Juliet, they usually think about a romantic story between two lovers. Yes, it is a story about two lovers, but it is not romantic considering that almost all the characters die, including Romeo and Juliet. Actually, this play, Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare, is considered a tragedy because of all the deaths that take place throughout the story. These two star-crossed lovers are to blame for the deaths, but not in the way someone might suspect. Although some people believe that love or lust killed all the characters in Romeo and Juliet, the real fault comes from the brains of Romeo and Juliet, which were undeveloped and prone to making bad decisions and taking
In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, many characters meet their tragic end as a result of a plethora of factors, from old rivalries to new love. It is a tragic story of two lovers, destined to complete each other, but also to end a bitter feud through their deaths (Prologue.3-6). However, if the blame had to be ascribed to one person in particular, that person would be Romeo Montague. Throughout the play, Shakespeare showcases Romeo’s irrationality and poor decision making, leading to the gruesome deaths of his loved ones. Romeo is most to blame for the tragic slew of deaths because he is oblivious, quick to act, and too urgent in his relationship.
Anais Nin once said, “You don’t find love, it finds you. It’s got a little to do with destiny, fate, and what’s written in the stars”. It is believed by numerous people that fate determines everything that happens in their lives, and they have no control over it, because their fate is already written in the stars. Fate is a somewhat controversial topic, but in the love story, Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare, fate is looked upon as inalterable, and isn’t influenced by the person themselves. In this tragedy, the idea, fate is written in the stars, is shown through the literary devices, foreshadowing and symbolism, which shows readers that, everything happens for a reason, and fate is beyond their control.
Romeo and Juliet, a play by William Shakespeare, is a tragic story on a pair of two star crossed lovers. Both part of feuding families, Romeo of the Montagues, and Juliet of the Capulets, their love is kept secret in fear of their families finding out. Even so, in the end both Romeo and Juliet die, due to a multitude of factors. In the end, Romeo lead to the demise of him and Juliet by killing Tybalt and rushing to Juliet’s grave.
Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet ends in tragedy, because of some of Romeo and Juliet’s faults. Romeo and Juliet obviously rush into things. They do not listen to the advice of Friar Lawrence and end up paying the ultimate price. They also ignore the obvious factors that prohibit Romeo and Juliet from ever being happy together. Romeo and Juliet are also very immature and are groomed for social disaster. Romeo and Juliet are also not in love, but in lust. The combination of impatience, immaturity, and ignoring other’s advice leads to the tragedy of these two “star-crossed lovers.”
Romeo and Juliet, written by Shakespeare, is overall a dark tale about two lovers on opposite sides that die for their love. In the play Romeo and Juliet, it shows that Shakespeare uses death, misfortune, and love to create conflict and drive forward the story. To begin with, Shakespeare uses death to show the rivalry between the two families and how much the two lovers love each other. In act three, scene one, Tybalt provokes Romeo to duel, but when he refuses, Mercutio answers. Mercutio ended up dying from the wounds, causing more tension between the families.
The play, “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare is a classic Elizabethan-styled tragedy, with two star-crossed lovers doomed by their families’ long standing feud. In the play, Shakespeare constantly outlines the theme of hate and its destructiveness, conveying a strong moral tale to the audience and characters. Juliet’s hate and resentment towards her parents became the spark that later on caused the destructive death of Romeo, Juliet and Paris. Furthermore, the hate-filled feud between the Montagues and Capulets lead to the tragic death of Tybalt and Mercutio, causing a great deal of destructiveness. Finally, the damage that both houses suffered at the end of the play puts forward the strong moral of “hate only destroys” to the audience.
In tragedy, the tragic hero’s choices lead to his destruction as a result of his tragic flaw. Romeo brings about his own death by taking the poison (5.3.85-111). His impatience and love for Juliet is his tragic flaw, and causes him to kill himself because he doesn’t want to live without Juliet. In most tragedies, the tragic hero is influenced by confrontation with a “superior force”. In Romeo and Juliet, hatred and fate are the superior forces. The Montagues and Capulets hatred for each other brings about Romeo's death in the end. Another element of tragic heroes is that their death proves a point. In the play, Romeo (and Juliet's) death ends the feud between the Montagues and Capulets
In The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, the relationship between the characters’ thoughts and actions come together to help develop many major themes in the play. Romeo and Juliet actions are mostly based upon the thought of being in love and their so called fate to be together. These two character’s being young teenagers in love affects their decision making skills. This is because being of young age our brains aren’t fully matured and developed so, making some of our decisions can be unwise and can lead to bad consequences. Themes that are emerging or are developed based on these factors are love and fate. Love and fate are two themes that stick out the most in the play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet because the sensual, solid love pushed
This quotation illustrates the theme of hate because when it is translated to contemporary English it is translated to “In the beautiful city of Verona, where our story takes place, a long standing hatred between two families erupts into new violence”. What they are trying to say in the translation is that the two families hate each other, and when Romeo and Juliet fall in love and their parents find out, they begin to hate the other family even more. Also, they had tried to separate them but had realized that they were only making them closer to one another. Both their families had realized what they had done by trying to separate the two star crossed lovers with the effect that the Capulets and Montagues’ hatred against one another had ended. 3.
There were many different themes in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. But I think the three most important ones were, love versus hate, chance versus choice, and parents and children. I think the main one way, parents and children, because we still have this contrast going on today. This theme is about the struggle of young people (teens) having to make decisions in fear of how their patents might react. Parents are forcing their interests into their children.
“For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo.” This quote gives closure to the play as it states that the conflict between the two families is pointless and has caused them both so much unnecessary grief. The whole play is based around the forceful hate shared between the two families when suddenly, an unexpected romance between Romeo and Juliet blossoms. While this may seem a bit cynic, Shakespeare’s works are known to be tragic with the main characters often dying so I feel that suspense, dramatic irony, and tragedy are very important elements he uses. In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare uses literary elements to make his play more vivacious. Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet, is written with a vast amount of
Students have been learning about William Shakespeare’s greatest works for years. They have been taught that he was the greatest writer of his time and about how his works still live on today. Many people still believe that he was the mastermind behind the beautiful stories of Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet, however this is not true. People have been taught for centuries that Shakespeare wrote every one of his works, however evidence shows that he has stolen ideas and that he might not be the author of his famous works.
In this text I will explain how and why Shakespeare is still so popular and the themes of his plays. Shakespeare is still so popular due to his plays and the themes he used in them. His themes are very interesting and vary form time to time in fact some of his plays are based on ambitions, other like Romeo and Juliet are based on love and hate as well as death. Most of Shakespeare's plays have the characteristic of containing more than one theme in fact many of our TV shows, cartoons, movies and etc are based on his plays. One example of this is the movie Gnomeo and Juliet which is in a way a parody but in another way is a simplified version of the long and difficult story of Romeo and Juliet. Not only the themes are are very intriguing but
Predetermined destiny is the concept of one's life being laid out ahead of time, if this comes from an higher being or the universe, many have their own ideas of what it all means,. Yet, there is still speculation revolving around the idea of fate. In the course of Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare, he uses the ideas of destiny throughout. From the moment, the young Montague and Capulet meet, the reader comes to their own thoughts and makes the conclusion that Romeo and Juliet are meant to be together, but tragedy will strike. Whether this means, they were set to meet during the Capulet party or elsewhere, there is no doubt that fate brings them together. Throughout the actions in Romeo and Juliet, the reader is oftentimes being reminded of what is to come, with the aspects of fate and destiny being hinted at.
