While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because of better transportation, better housing conditions, less disease, electricity, and new better products, it was actually a negative thing for society. Industrialization’s negative effects were child labor, many deaths, diseases, missing limbs from machines, the machines were not designed for kids to work with, dynamite or explosive warfare, big business cartels, deformations, corrupt businesses, less family time, pollution, and poor working conditions.
The biggest problem about the industrial Revolution was the matter of Child labor. Child labor was used and favored by many businesses because children could be paid less than women that could be paid less than men. According to the conversation on document 7,C: What time did you begin work at the factory? B: When I was six years old. (Document7) This part of the conversation on document 7 directly mentions child labor. Child labor began in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Children would work in mostly textile factories. These were all side effects of spending twelve to sixteen hours in a coal mine. These diseases were not easily treatable at the time which led to some spreading of disease like cholera. Nowadays, scientists are able to treat diseases and sicknesses such as the ones listed above. All the deaths, maimings, and injuries are all perfect examples of why the Industrial Revolution was a negative effect on society because the ends didn’t justify the means. While many people think that the Industrial Revolution was very positive for society, those people also tend to neglect how many children were killed or worse. The industrial Revolution was a very dark time in America and if there is another, hopefully it won’t be so
