Individuality In Ayn Rand's Anthem And George Orwell

Ayn Rand’s Anthem and George Orwell’s 1984 both change my thinking of individuality because within the society we live in today it is an important aspect in everyone’s life because it gives us the freedom to voice our opinion and debate our differences. Throughout these two novels each character can not have a mind of their own, they are controlled through people and must do what they say. They have no basic human rights. In George Orwell's 1984 Winston is not allowed to have his own thoughts. The citizens are not allowed to like things they want to like, and not allowed to do things they want to do. Equality 7-2521 is considered a curse because he is tall, strong, and intellectually curious so he stand out from the rest of his peers. “It is a sin to write this. It is a sin to think words no others are to see. It is base and evil. It is as if we were speaking alone to no ears but our own. And we know well that there is no transgression blacker than to do or think alone. We have broken the laws. The laws say men may not write unless the Council of Vocations bid them so. May we be forgiven.” (Rand Ch. 1). The citizens have no freedom of speech to voice their opinions. In the quote, it says “It is a sin to write this” this means it is a bad thing to think freely and let your thoughts go and you must have approval from the Council to write. Later in the novel, Equality 7-2521 finds an opening to a hidden tunnel, each night he sneaks off and spends some time alone in the tunnel and learns new things and conducts experiments. The council is to never know because he will be punished. Later he discovers electricity and creates a light bulb and decided to presents it to the Council. He gets caught up in his creation and forget to return to the city on time. Later he is tortured and refuses to say where he’s been.
