For the last century, individualism vs. collectivism has been a political conflict in America. What is collectivism and individualism you might ask, well collectivism is briefly defined as a group of people working together to give priority over individuals. On the other hand, individualism can be defined as a theory of favoring freedom over collective individuals and working to benefit his/her own self. Although the two seem very different, they also share many similar characteristics. In the novel Anthem, the main character lives in a society based from collectivism. The men and women are unable to choose what jobs they are given when they reach the working age, the Scholars choose their jobs for them. These Scholars are a group who are looked up to because they are the only people who are allowed to come up with new ideas for their society. Everyone else in the society accepts the job they’re given and works this jobs for the rest of their life. The jobs in their society are what is viewed as the people’s identity. People with the same job are viewed as a whole instead of instead of individuals. Individuality is lost in this society because groups are viewed as a primary entity. …show more content…

In our society people are given the freedom to act, interact and make choices as individuals. Everyone can interact with each other and they are allowed to pick a job or career. After people pick their job of choice they work to make and provide for their families. They are also allowed to pick a new career if the one they have doesn’t satisfy them. People are individually known and not characterized by just the job position that they have. Knowing these characteristics of individualism helps to understand why it is the base for today’s
