There is alarming number of Indigenous Australia’s currently serving time in prisons and from 2001 the numbers has been increasing. According to Krieg (2006) Indigenous incarceration may be the direct consequences of inadequate housing, mental health, substance use, family violence and disability. Australia Bureau of Statistics (2012a) suggests that Indigenous Australia make up only 2.5 per cent of total population however sadly represent 26 per cent of the adult population in Australia Prisons. Thus Indigenous Australians have are higher rates of unemployment, homelessness, poor school attendance, poor health, family violence and substance abuse than non-Indigenous Australia (Weatherburn, 2014).
Substance abuse among Indigenous Australia has a clear link to Incarceration because substance abuse is a contributing factor in family violence, child abuse and financial (Commonwealth of Australia, 2015). Other risks factors contributing to Incarceration is that Indigenous Australia have a high rates of poor health and mental health issues (Commonwealth of Australia, 2015). In addition, Indigenous Australian have a high rates of unemployment, poor education and inadequate housing which all have strong link to Incarceration (Wearherburn, 2014).
Therefore the Incarceration of Indigenous Australia is a social issue that needs to be address through government policy and community action (Wahlquist, 2015).
