Due to modern-day industrial activities, environmental issues continue to occur including, accelerated sea level rise and longer, more intense heat waves. Unfortunately, however, for the past decade scientists have been warning the public of climate change but have hardly made any progress to express the urgency of the matter, all of which was discussed in the 2006 documentary, “An Inconvenient Truth.” Subsequently, the world has fallen short on implementing serious industrial change. On the contrary, the trailer for “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power”, published by Paramount Pictures under the direction of Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk, effectively convinces its audience to watch the documentary by conveying the devastating effects of …show more content…
Obviously, the problem is climate change but more specifically, how does the world work together to fix it. This must be discussed among powerful individuals who have the authority to make regulations and influence policy-making. However, it is nearly impossible for all countries to come to a decision regarding industrial regulations because the economy is different in every country. For example, the trailer shows an array of videos, exposing the tiresome work previous politicians have completed and it all come crumbing down when Trump announces he is going to cut funding for the EPA. In turn, he denounces the significance of climate change to the American public. Which leads to the intended audience, Cohen and Shenk wanted to get not only American citizens to come see the movie but also people in powerful positions, including politicians and managers of industrial businesses. The trailer alone could convince politicians and industrial managers to reconsider their decisions regarding climate change initiatives.
Everything considered, Cohen and Shenk’s trailer for “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power”, grabs the attention of the American public, especially politicians, and persuades them to go see the movie. This is accomplished by the trailer’s graphic videos of the damaging effects of climate change along with powerful people working to prevent
Al Gore included various examples of logos in his documentary. Logos was necessary to convince the viewers that Global warming was a real threat. One excellent example was the chart that compared CO2 and temperature. It was a well-placed example because it demonstrated the established relationship between CO2 and average temperature, and their pattern of increase. By including graphs and relating the graph’s importance to our daily lives, it grabbed our attention and showed how important it was to fix our habits.
Michael Pollan's article, “Why Bother”, was written to raise awareness on the controversial issue of Global Warming while also calling for change amongst individuals, on a global scale. The article is a great example of rhetorical writing as Pollan focuses on targeting the audience by invoking emotion through his personal anecdotes as well as scientific evidence and expert analysis. The articles takes the audience on a journey where we begin not truly understanding the point of it all and ending with what hopefully is a strong need to act. Michael Pollan begins his article off with a story about his overwhelming feeling of shock after watching Al Gore’s, “An Inconvenient Truth.” He describes the most emotional aspect of the entire documentary
This film can hit anyone's heart and help them to believe if we don't stop global warming, global warming will take over our
Sometimes I wonder what the vision of our future is bound to look like. What will our world look like due to our ignorance towards politicians and scientists' involvement in climate change? Our world lives in blissful ignorance, overwhelmed by gossip and rumours, rather than focused on the problems that will change our race completely. Social media has taken over my life and the life of my generation. Both Jonathan Clay and Adam McKay express the fault our race contributes to in their films.
How is “seeing” climate change in the film different than learning about climate change through a book or a news story?
During the past several hundred years, civilization has made rapid progress in industries like air travel, automobiles, and energy production. These developments were made without consideration of the long-term effects that their emissions may have on the planet. Changing weather patterns are now wreaking havoc around the world, and scientists attribute this to human-caused climate change. During President Obama’s State of the Union address in 2015, he stated that, “No challenge poses a greater threat to future generations than climate change,” (“Remarks by the President”). Warming temperatures caused by anthropogenic climate change have disastrous consequences that pose a threat to humanity and the environment.
In “An Inconvenient Truth”, Al Gore begins to express his goal towards his audience on the topic of global warming. This issue was Al Gore’s main focus throughout the entirety of the video, and was explained thoroughly while ethos and pathos was used as a tool to connect with the audience. Gore uses ethos as a tool to concern global warming as more of an ethical and moral motivation rather than a political one. Throughout the video, Gore uses great amounts of information based on the issues of global warming and its great disadvantages. Issuing this, Gore uses pathos in order to get his point across on how the Earth and life on it might be affected. Due to Gore’s audience being younger minded non-scientists, Gore stated his arguments on global warming by creating a humorous cartoon video which gave more of an easier explanation on the serious matter. Gore continues to give explanations by also relating back into his past life experiences.
It makes people crazy because there is always something going on with the world nature wise. Looking pass through those data and though all those numbers won’t stay in your head, it's vital to notice that it has caused so much damage on our planet and that global warming is legit; it’s not something that is made up. By showing past performance of global warming for example hurricane katrina which affected most of america. We need to take a stand of this problem and actually make a difference than just ranting about it’s horrible affect. He provides an enormous amount of technical information by taking advantage of a multimedia format. By showing us the impact and the future impact it’ll make, it catches the audience attention leading them to give sympathy and hopefully acting upon
And by making the audience afraid of these predictions about climate change, Scott persuades the audience that the only logical choice is to support Hansen in order to prevent Hansen’s
First of all, the introduction to the documentary is very brutal and horrifying because of all the destruction that is taking place. I think it is interesting that the one scientist, later identified as Thom Hartmann, uses an analogy at the beginning of the movie to compare Earth and its environmental problems to an organism infected with a disease. What also interests me is that many of the people interviewed mention that we think of ourselves as superior to all other species even though we are still just a part of nature. I never knew to what extent global warming could go, but Stephen Hawking stated, “the worse case scenario is that Earth would become like its sister planet, Venus, with a temperature of 250 centigrade and raining sulfuric
Science fiction movies often depict the consequences of failing to slow the damage to the environment in the science fiction movie, The Day After Tomorrow, the weather on earth begins to do strange things. The ice caps start to melt and break, tornados rip through Hollywood, and tsunamis flood the coast. Jack Hall, a climatologist, explains global warming and the melting of the ice caps is to blame for this weather. He predicts the North Atlantic current will shut down, and the northern states will see the next ice age. The vice president dismisses his claims until his predictions come true in the following days. Eventually, the air in the north gets so cold that people seem to freeze within seconds resulting in a nearly unsurvivable ice age where people in the north must stay inside near a fire to survive. The dystopian future depicted in the movie The Day After Tomorrow reflect societal anxieties about earth’s changing climate.
Many believe there’s a controversy among scientists over the cause of the climate crisis we’ve been undergoing for the last 50 years, but that’s not actually the case. In the film An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore sets out to inform individuals that the increase in greenhouse gas emission, in which causes global warming, is a direct result of the habits we possess as individuals, nations, and planet as a whole. Throughout the film, viewers are introduced to a variety of characters who possess motivations relative to the issue, along with many tropes, images, and schemes impacting the way in which the information is presented. We’re also going to analyze mode of audience and the theme relative to characters, events, and setting.
As debates surrounding climate change have grown in recent times, especially with Donald Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, many environmentalists have evidently viewed his deed as a call to action. In today’s world, environmental change has been glossed over simply for the fact that some disagree upon its existence. In turn, other well known figures have taken matters into their own hands; as a strong believer in climate change himself, famous actor and environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio gave a powerful speech in front of the United Nations (UN) Climate summit. Through use of the rhetorical triangle, the three appeals, the patterns of development, and SOAPSTone, DiCaprio presents his speech effectively to his audience.
Environmental issues such as climate change affect life on Earth every day. As Leonardo DiCaprio discusses in his speech during the Paris Agreement for Climate Change Signing at the United Nations, the only way to diminish global warming, one of the most critical issues of this generation, is to take unprecedented action. By informing the audience with an effective strategy, DiCaprio persuades the delegates to make the right decision that will mold the future. His evidence compliments the coherent use of ethos, logos, and pathos. Climate change is a universal matter that can either persist, or be put to an end.
The most interesting thing I found about this film was the speed of which global warming is occurring. I always thought it would happen at a much slower pace than it actually is. The most surprising part about the film was when he talked about how the extinction rate today is 100 to 1000 times higher than it should be.
