In ancient Rome, architecture and engineering were highly regarded. It contributed much to Rome’s development, power, as well as the longevity of such an immense and substantial empire. Architecture displayed an immense amount of workmanship as well as innovation. This is seen through Rome engineers as they created the concept of concrete, constructed the famous Roman aqueducts, and the luxurious Roman baths. They even managed to pack the concrete into wooden forms, so they could use the concrete underwater, for aqueducts and underwater structures. The Romans started using concrete over 2,000 years ago, which resulted in building structures such as the Pantheon and the Colosseum, and even building aqueducts and monuments! Monuments that are walked on by tourists, and touched by children and adults daily, are still holding strong. Concrete was important to Roman's because it could essentially create art that will last forever. Aggregate is essentially a filler, such as gravel, chunks of stone and rubble, broken bricks, etc. Binding agent is a substance which is mixed with the aggregate wet (water added) and solidifies when it dries, or "sets." Many materials, even mud, can be a binding agent, and used to make, what we generally call, mortar.
