If you read his week’s lesson you had to laugh as you read the descriptions given of the status of most American churches. To be a successful church the author states that the church should function and relate to the people’s culture that the church is located within. So obviously one established standard for every community will not be attractive in every different cultural grouping. If a church is not serving its indvual communities preferences it will not experience growth. Many times an establish church establishes its preferences upon the memberships traditions. Was Red Star not considered the prominent church in Cape Girardeau, Missouri in the fifties? In what era did Red Star have its largest membership? The corner stone on the front of this church indicates the principal building of Red Star was laid in the fifties? A very large part of our church leadership and established membership were adults that have supported this church since the fifties. From my own personal history concerning this church I have heard my Mother speak about the huge numbers of people that attended this church when it had its peak attendance. The consultant spoke of visiting churches like ours and found that people many times didn’t want change because “that’s the way we have always done it”! It does seem to make sense when someone says “why change look how successful we have been in the past. I am as guilty as everyone else when I think why change ‘this is the way we like it’; ‘isn’t it our church’? Then the author of the lesson throws a monkey wrench into the works by quoting John 20:21.
