In The Strange Case Of Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde

Imagine having two people living in one body. One might be more powerful than the other. For Dr. Jekyll, he is a well-respected man around town, but wants a change in his life. Mr. Hyde is Dr. Jekyll’s other half that does many crimes throughout the story. There is a mystery the entire time until the end. In the novel, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, written by Robert Louis Stevenson; Dr. Jekyll changes into Mr. Hyde by drinking a potion that he has made himself. Mr. Hyde has many traits that differ from Dr. Jekyll, including being ugly, wicked, and ape-like.

In the novella, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, I believe that Dr. Henry Jekyll suffers from a severe case of addiction; an addiction to his evil counterpart, Mr. Hyde, whom allows him to experience and indulge in the pleasures of his evilness without repercussions or disgracing his highly respected name in the community.Dr. Jekyll’s obsession with good and evil and discovering a way to separate the two, as well as his refusal to give up Hyde are all components of his addiction. It is Jekyll’s obsession with the “pleasures” that only the other half of his personality can provide, that he cannot give up. Some of the common symptoms of addiction are denial, withdrawal, dependence, excessive intake and seclusion. I strongly believe Dr. Jekyll suffers from addiction due to the fact that he has exhibited these signs numeruosly throughout the text. According to the American Society of Addiction Medicine,

He states “that man is not truly one, but truly two” (Stevenson 55). Jekyll imagines that the human soul is a battleground for an “angel” and a “villain” each fighting for mastery. What becomes of the story is Hyde becoming the one who wins the battle over Jekyll’s body as his power grew. What became of Jekyll and Hyde’s relationship is stressed with “The hate that now divided them was equal on each side” (Stevenson 69).

    Throughout Western literature, writers have created characters who act as perfect foils to each other with dramatically observable differences. Each pairing has a stronger and weaker in the combination, and usually one outlives the other. He Lives in London, handsome, and generally respected. He has alienated some of his close professional friends because of his experiments concerning the nature of mankind. He was a good man, helped people, had a good spirit. Until Hyde came along and changed Jekyll. Jekyll's had another side to him that became so obsessive that he was finally, no longer was able to control the the evil growing inside him. Jekyll was turning into Hyde, which is a very bad thing, a good soul is becoming into a evil soul. Hyde's personality is a bad person, he is evil, kills people, steps on little girls, and other things. Hyde is the fleshy, manifestation of Dr. Jekyll's personality, he is guilty of killing people. Hyde also creates terror, the servants are extremely frightened of him. When they think he is around the house, the servants are so scared of him. Since Hyde represents the evil or perverse side of Jekyll, and since Jekyll enjoys the degradations which Hyde commits, Hyde gradually begins to take over the good Dr. Jekyll. When Jekyll commits suicide in order to get rid of Hyde, this allows Hyde to become the dominant evil figure and the dying Jekyll becomes Hyde in the final death.

People strive to fit into the society around them. In doing this they often suppress some aspects of their desires. After giving into desire once, the need for it may increase, and control may slowly decrease. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde explores the multi-faceted dimensions of the human psyche. There is a constant battle raging within every person between morality and desire. Very often the more one attempts to suppress natural urges the stronger and more profound they become.

In the end, he could not bear any more and he suicided himself.
