In the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, by Robert Louis Stevenson, Jekyll creates a drug that can turn him into Hyde, his alter ego. The drug Jekyll created, in his laboratory at home, allowed him to transform into Mr. Hyde, a rude man with an “unexpressed deformity” (Stevenson, 50) who seemed to have little to no control over what he did. Jekyll created Hyde because he was interested in the two personas in one person and believed it was possible to isolate the two. If he could isolate the two sides of a person’s character then it would be possible to get rid of the side that held his innermost desires which did not fit societies norm, his inner Hyde. Utterson, his friend, Jekyll described that his desire to maintain Hyde developed because Hyde allowed Jekyll the freedom to “like a schoolboy, strip off these lendings and spring headlong into the sea of liberty” (Stevenson, 80). Not only does this describe Jekyll’s desire to be free of societies judgments and do as he pleases, but his allusion to a schoolboy undressing, also graphically confesses about his repressed homosexuality. Jekyll did, however, enjoy his guilty pleasures through Hyde. Jekyll “shared in the pleasures and adventures of Hyde”(Stevenson, 85) but did not want to become Hyde all the time because then he would become “at a blow and forever, despised and friendless” (Stevenson 85). The more Jekyll repressed his desires, the more he desired the life of Hyde and therefore the stronger Hyde became. After, Jekyll believed that Hyde had gotten stronger after several months of repression. Hyde’s house servant brings this up; “it was nearly two months since she had seen him till yesterday” (Stevenson, 52). This shows that Jekyll could not live without Hyde and that the more Jekyll restrained Hyde, his inner self, the stronger he
