The curious incident of the dog in the night is a very interesting book because it covers a very tough and serious subject and that is the one of autism. It touches on a lot of good points, but there is a particular point that really holds strong in my beliefs. And that is that A perfectly normal person is rare in our civilization. There is much evidence to support this claim. The first reason to support this claim is that normal does not exist in the first place. This is true because we as a society have coined the word normal as a term to describe someone that is just like the others. Although in reality, everyone is different. Whether it is social differences.like in the case of Curtis from the curious incident, physical or mental we …show more content…
There are multiple reasons that this statement is true and one of them is that if everyone is normal that means everyone is the same, and waking up and talking to the same person every single day about the same exact thing with everyone would get very boring. There would be no differing opinions no debates just boredom. It would be very Kafkaesque, going to work doing the same thing as everyone else coming home repeat, over and over with the same people no diversity. Imagine how boring sports and entertainment would be, just watching the same thing over and over again with the same people. That is why people like Christopher that and everyone else who is different makes the world go round with their genius and differences. Another reason the world would be boring is that no one would never meet new people that are unique and show people a different perspective on life. One of the best things about going to high school for a lot of people is that they get to meet a lot of new people all with their own unique personalities that can really change up one's life. Lastly, if everyone is normal then no one wants to do anything out of the ordinary because that puts them out of normality.”The rule for working out prime numbers is really simple, but no one has ever worked out a simple formula for telling you whether a very big number is a prime number or what the next one will be. If a number is really, really big, it can take a computer years to work out whether it is a prime number.” (19.6) this quote shows that if everyone were normal then people as smart as Christopher and Christopher himself will not go out of the path of normality and make these observations and if none is doing anything extraordinary that is just
Millions of people around the world suffer from autism and other mental disabilities that make facing their fears a challenge for them. In the novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon, the main character Christopher Boone has autism and finds it difficult to pertain to many social situations. He fears strangers, things not going how he expected them to, and brown foods. This makes it hard for Christopher to control himself in circumstances that may seem simple to the average person. Christopher must learn to deal with both internal and external conflicts in the novel, as he becomes a stronger character through the many conflicts.
Temple Grandin provides the information in a very clear and coherent manner, keeping a firm order and not drifting from her specific topic points. The topic of the book is very originally and she makes it even more creative by providing real life situations that she has experienced, not only with her autism, but with her career as well. Grandin avoids the use of colloquial words, contractions, and abbreviations. She uses passive voice when referring to scientific information and uses complex sentences. Grandin makes her points clear with great amounts of confidence

A “normal person” can be considered many different things, depending on the viewpoint of the person. Often times one would consider a “normal person” to be a person without any sort of mental illness. A normal person is someone who adapts to the norms and standards of society.
The set of books I chose to read were Mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine and Rules by Cynthia Lord. Both of the books had a main character that was in some way related to autism. In the book, Rules the main character was the sister to a person with autism. Both books are told from a first person perspective. In Rules the main character's brother, David has high functioning autism and she has to take him to the clinic with her mother so he can have his therapy appointment. She feels neglected because the parents spend a lot of time with David. But in the book Mockingbird the main character has high functioning autism and her brother recently got shot and killed, she does not know how to react. This book also helps the reader understand why she
Autism is a disorder that I seem to hear more about every day. I hear about it on the television news, in news articles online, and even personal blogs that I read. It seems that everyone has some knowledge of autism and most people know someone personally that it affects. As far as my own personal knowledge and experience of the disorder, I learned it at camp. I have volunteered many years for at Camp Tik-A-Witha. This camp provides a week long session for children with special needs (mental and physical handicaps) called Elizabeth Gwin Session. While volunteering at camp, I have seen children with blindness, Cerebral Palsy, Down syndrome, and autism.
The mind of an autistic person is fascinating and frightening because usually their actions can’t accurately express what their brain is thinking. It is frustrating to try and determine what a child with autism is trying to say, and often results in them being misunderstood. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, by Mark Haddon, tells the story from the perspective of Christopher Boone, a fifteen year old boy with autism. Chris is brilliant at math and science, but is unable to understand or express emotion. His difficult home life further contributes to his illness; he doesn’t have anyone at home who supports him and tries to help him. His teacher, Siobhan, is his only friend and the only person who tries to help him learn to
“At the Dark End of the Street,” is a novel that takes back to the terrifying experience Recy Taylor had in Abbeville, Alabama. Taylor was gang-raped by six white men in the 1940s. This scene immediately shows readers the civil rights movement during the 20th century and how important it was in understanding what was happening. Danielle McGuire is the author of “At the Dark End of the Street,” which was published in 2010. However, “This Nonviolent Stuff’ll Get You Killed,” is a novel that focuses on King’s protection during the Montgomery bus boycott that took place in Montgomery, Alabama. Charles E. Cobb is the author of “This Nonviolent Stuff’ll Get You Killed,” and was published in 2014. Both of these novels focus their points on different and similar aspects of the civil rights movement. When Cobb wrote “This Nonviolent Stuff’ll Get You Killed,” he focuses on the protection African Americans needed in order to not get killed completing everyday tasks, like going grocery shopping. Even on public transportation, civil rights activist felt threatened to the point of bringing weapons and concealing them on their personnel. Even though both novels take place during different times of the Civil Rights Movement they both show the similar hardships important figures played during this movement.
I myself have a form of high functioning autism known as Asperger’s Syndrome. Asperger’s Syndrome, or AS for short, was discovered in the early 20th century by a physician for whom it’s named, who
In researching the history of autism, I have found many interesting things that I’ve never heard or read about before. Studies say that the disorder is very rare, and it only occurs in four to five of every 10,000 births. Autism affects three to four times as many boys as girls. According to the passage "Autism." by Patricia Braus, as many as two-thirds of children with autistic symptoms are mentally deficient, but individuals with autism can be highly intelligent. Sometimes, individuals that carry Autism have the ability to retain phenomenal numbers of facts and information. An autistic
Throughout the novel,’ The curious Incident of the dog in the night-time,’ the theme of the understanding and the acceptance of people’s differences is explored by Variety of events and different situations. Prior to reading this novel, most responders would have been unaware of differences between them and someone who has Asperger’s syndrome so the plot is ensuring us the readers the novel is informative to the responder.
In all aspects of the lives we live, normal can not ever be defined as a single idea. If normal is such a thing at all, it is a subjective opinion and can only be defined on an individual level. Everything we interpret is relative to our upbringing and our environment. Not one person had the same upbringing or lived in the same environment as another person for even siblings who have lived together their whole lives have different nurturing experiences. The differentiation between normal and abnormal is a topic of much debate. The meaning of normality varies in many ways such as by person, time, place, situation, culture and set of values. Normality is usually seen as good and desirable by society and what society thinks while abnormality may be seen as bad or undesirable (Boundless).
When we say normal, we take in to mind what we see on TV and in magazines. TV plays the biggest part in our country's depiction of normal because pretty much every household has a television. If you asked majority of Americans what their idea of a normal family was, they would probably describe something similar to my family; two married parents, a few children, living in a ranch style house, in a middle class neighborhood. Even though this is our idea of normal, it really doesn't seem that way anymore. TV families are changing, and fewer "normal" families can be seen on today's sitcoms. The divorce rate is always getting higher, more and more families are moving into brand new subdivisions, and getting away from the normal seems to be the thing to do these days. I think that the vision of "normal" is slowly changing, mainly because the middle-class families are changing. To me, middle-class and normal go hand in hand.
It’s the middle of the night. You’re hungry. You go to the kitchen and turn on the light. Suddenly, you step on something crunchy. You bend down to take a look. It is a cockroach! In New York City, in all homes and buildings, cockroaches abound. Just like its human residents, New York City 's roaches are among the most diverse in the world. Cockroaches have been around for millions of years, evolving into some of the most adaptable pests on Earth. And no matter how hard exterminators try, the stubborn cockroaches don’t seem to die off. In fact, as time progresses, different species of cockroaches will be discovered and they will become more adaptable to the New York climate and also resistant to chemical poisons. It is safe to say, we are
In simplest terms, normalcy is the state of being normal. Likewise, gender normalcy is what is expected from each gender in our society due to the gender roles that we have learned from the media, our ancestors, and our society as a whole; the media, however, is the main agent of gender normalcy.
