In 1959 Holcomb, Kansas the family was brutally killed by gunshot wounds while being tied up by Dick Hickock and Perry Smith. Perry Smith and Dick Hickock at first get away with the murders. They left little clues and had no personal connection to the murdered family. The residents of Holcomb were deeply affected by the murders. “The village of Holcomb stands on the high wheat plains of Western Kansas, a lonesome area that other Kansans call "out there." The townspeople viewed the Clutters as the family “least likely” in the town to be murdered. They became unable to conceive that the killers were strangers. Many townspeople became anxious about their own safety because they felt as if they could not trust their neighbors. Alvin Dewey was the lead investigator who became obsessed with the murders. Spring comes; school lets out for the cotton season. Rumor says that T.J. is spending more time with Melvin and R. W. and that they are just using him. One night in early summer, some nearby farmers come by and tell Papa not to buy anything for them on his next trip to Vickburg. Granger amongst other plantation owners are threatening to decrease pay and even kick the tenants off their land then put the men on a chain gang if they do not begin shopping at the Wallace store. All but seven families stop ordering goods from Vicksburg. Mama feels this is not enough to hurt the Wallaces but Papa will not give up. On the next trip to Vicksburg they are ambushed. While Papa is repairing a sabotaged wagon wheel, a truck pulls up and fires--a bullet grazes his head. Then the horse rears up and pulls the wagon wheel over Papa's leg. L. T. makes short work of the men however, who turn out to be the Wallaces, breaking Dewberry Wallace's back.

Truman Capote's, In Cold Blood is an account of the murder of the Clutter's family; who had not done anything wrong to their murderers, had never met their murderers and whose deaths came unexpectedly. Capote analyzes the reason of the killings and reenacts the crime. He starts from the beginning of everyday life of the Clutters and ends with the hanging of Perry and Dick. Capote's illustration of the uses of metaphors, imageries and flashbacks gives him the opportunity to get into the character's heads and learn why the Clutter family was murdered.
By allowing the reader a glimpse into each character’s past, the reader was able to establish a stronger bond to each character. However, Capote also used this strategy to disclose more and more information about the murders, an event that the reader knows happened, but not how or why. On page 108, Capote used a flashback when Dick is thinking about whether or not Perry is “a normal.” Dick thinks back to “Last Spring, when [they] had lived together at Kansas State Penitentiary” and how “Perry could be ‘such a kid,’ always wetting his bed and crying in his sleep.” This flashback allows the reader to see Perry’s tortured soul, and hints at some mental instability.
The first chapter is written about the ordinary event of Clutter family, but actually, this is their last day on earth. Parents Herb and Bonnie and teens Kenyon and Nancy, are a happy, prosperous family living on their farm in Holcomb, Kansas. This is an ideal family with civic-minded and respected by all of the people live in the town. I would think this is a happy story among this family if I don't know the title of this book is In Cold Blood. And the big change happens soon, Perry Smith and Dick Hickock, the killers, slaughter them all late that night. And Perry and Dick flee after the murders and run to Mexico.The investigation of the Clutter murders seems to be heading nowhere.
