In Class Reparation: I don’t think that the country doesn’t anything drastic to move forward from our history with African Americans. The small moves here and there are what’s going to help their community. Even if the African American community is given a large compensation for our past transgression, this would be a gesture of good faith. However first off, this won’t stop prejudice and racism towards blacks. As described in the article, to some people, racism is a mindset. A popular belief is hard to erase from people’s minds because these racist beliefs are not only stereotypes of African Americans (violence, live in bad areas, low income, etc.), some of they are very true for a majority of their race.
Secondly, there will still be resentment

"No one will dispute that slavery and Jim Crow were horrible and inhumane; no one will dispute that discrimination still exists, though only a delusional person would deny that America has made radical, dramatic, inspiring progress in the last 40 years.” This is very true. Even though, slavery and segregation seem very far away, it hasn’t even been a century since these events. I think that our country is in the identification phase of helping African American. You watch the news, and they often exaggerate white on black crime. For awareness, this is great, however the image you get is somewhat deceiving. People, then make the assumption that our most of our white officers are racists, and we need to help out the community. So in my opinion, some people are protesting black lives matter for the wrong reasons. Moving forward, the African American community’s transgression needs to taken into consideration heavily. Many government moves have shown great promise, but where there is a good effect being produced, there is an inverse effect happening somewhere else. The United States have created many laws and bills to make this a better country, but “seven out of ten” times, African Americans get the short end of the
In terms of your first point, I do agree that there should be action on black on black crime, but the difference between the Blacklivesmatter movement/ police brutality and black on black crimes is that the police officers are are not convicted/ go to jail whereas black civilians who commit these crimes do. This isn't a jab against you or anything but it really pisses me off when i see that people are using black vs black crimes as an argument to invalidate the black lives matter
One of the the most controversial topics of discussion in our nation is the Black Lives Matter movement. This movement has sparked up immensely because of the President in office right now, Donald Trump, and many events transpiring around the nation. The country is at separation between the people who think that Black Lives Matter is a real issue and the people who think it is not. Without a doubt, people need to be considered equally, no matter what is said at the end of the day. America was founded on the idea that every man that walks on the soil will have just as equal opportunities as the next, no matter the race. Three essential reasons people are determined to fight for this cause is to end job discrimination, stop police brutality, and gain equal rights within society.
The Black Lives Matter movement is a waste of time, money, and political effort. The article, “The Flag is Drenched With Our Blood”, is all fluff. I understand people are very very very easily offended, but please, why are we still bringing up slavery? (I can feel the hate seeping through my computer). Written like an english essay, this article fails to mention as it does in the other, “Hard Data, Hollows Protests”, how most of the violence is blacks to blacks. How the statistics are taken in the slums of beaten down parts of cities all across the US. And in regards to police brutality only on the rarest of occasions do we see the abuse of power over manipulation and false accusations of the plaintiff. Even spoken in class, we discuss how
Hitler killed a total of 16 million people; the slave trade era killed almost four times more than Hitler. Today, the past lead the white people as we get to see many African-Americans treated as minorities. This is not a colonial or a capitalist influence, but it’s more of the racial influence. This has shown from many social media website where African-Americans today were outrageous in the things many African-Americans were suffering from getting shot. What actions will they do? African Americans had enough and eventually formed the Black Lives Matter movement to fight back racism or the ruination of America; also known as #blacklivesmatter. This movement became phenomenal as more and more people support this day after day. It bought many
In the present paper a clear link will be made between segregation and slavery and an increased poverty rate in African Americans now, as well as an analysis of previous historical instances of reparations and how other instances of reparations from slavery set a precedent for reparations for African Americans. There will also be mention of past historical precedent and how, when reparations were given prior, they were received. International law must be addressed as well, and it plays a key part in the argument for reparations. Once that information is established, I will go on to the gap in my knowledge. The gap that is present in my research is futuristic, therefore, there is no way to be completely sure of what way reparations will affect African Americans lives. The way I am hoping to reach this gap is through an analysis of different historical accounts of reparations. Along with looking to historical precedent, I will also look to see if financial aid will still be available to the African Americans who do receive reparations. The topic of reparations is a highly controversial one because there are extremely strong arguments on each side, some of which I will mention in this paper. Reparations have not yet been given to African Americans so there is a large gap in knowledge as to whether or not they will work. Since reparations are all theoretical this paper will be based heavily on
President Obama said, "When people say Black Lives Matter, that doesn't mean blue lives don't matter." On August of 2014, The Blacks Lives Matter movement began. Why the movement started was because of a white police officer shot a black man Michael Brown just 18 years old. They say it was because they thought he was pulling out a weapon. But, was it really because of a weapon or racial injustice. If it was just of racism and personal thoughts the man should not be a police officer if he puts other people in danger. Also, this is not the first time racism has taken place, not just now it was back in 1400´s. Racism takes place today when you walk down the street and you hear racism, or there is racism on social media. Why did blacks and whites become separate identities? Why did blacks begin to be treated not equal
In the “Case for Reparations”, Coates presents the issue about how black and white people live in the same world but do not inhabit the same cities. By saying this, Coates means that although the two races co-exist in the same world, the way in which they live and prosper is on complete opposite spectrums. Whether it is a job, health, education, or life expectancy white people have had better resources for years now, and have always been affluent over black people in areas such as these. It seems as though what comes naturally for whites are things that blacks have to fight a lot harder for, and the dividing factor in all these situations is always race. Education is one of the most important tools of life yet the US education system is still unequal due to racial diversity. Some black
We’re being targeted with : police brutality, stereotyping, and hate crimes. Police brutality has become a big debate over the past few years. Major cases including Trayvon Martin and Eric Gardner have become known nationwide. It's come to a point where African Americans fear police officers but their purpose is to serve as protection from harm. Furthermore , statistically the black race is the most unemployed race in America. For the most part this is our fault, some of us don’t put in a big effort as much as others. When seeking employment and factoring in some of the stereotypes some of us have the slightest chance at being offered good jobs, due to the lack of initiative. Also, after the senseless killing of nine people at a church in South Carolina many people have found it acceptable to express their hate with waving around the Confederate flag. The Confederate flag has been a symbol of racism since the Civil War. As generations have passed , you would expect others to be more open to being accepting but it seems as if we take two steps forward to be pushed two steps
First, racial injustice has torn this country apart. We have had riots over the breakouts of one person and the Black Lives Matter marches. Also, the Sons of Confederate Soldiers are getting bashed because the Civil War was over slavery. Those have started the riots over slavery because of the past. When you start talking about white lives matter it gets all racial. Then when you start talking about black lives it isn’t
For decades black Americans have been treated as animals, looked at as if they are monsters, and killed like bugs. Actions like Police brutality and racism is what caused Black Lives Matter. The creation of the Black Lives Matter was a response by the black community to give a voice to black Americans affected by the increase of wrongful deaths due to the law enforcements and vigilantes across the country. This has been going on for so long that it seems like we are stuck in the past. For years, even decades black Americans have had to live the struggle of being equal. Even when things are going good and we think we finally have the same rights, something happened to change that. It is time to shed a light on the real purpose of Black Lives Matter and why they are important to today's society.
Throughout history, African Americans have encountered an overwhelming amount of obstacles for justice and equality. You can see instances of these obstacles especially during the 1800’s where there were various forms of segregation and racism such as the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan terrorism, Jim- Crow laws, voting restrictions. These negative forces asserted by societal racism were present both pre and post slavery. Although blacks were often seen as being a core foundation for the creation of society and what it is today, they never were given credit for their work although forced. This was due to the various laws and social morals that were sustained for over 100 years throughout the United States. However, what the world didn’t
The Black Lives Matter movement has swept across America. It 's branched out with chapters in over 31 cities and held rallies and boycotts across the United States(Sidner). The Black Lives Matter movement started with the outrage of the death of a young man. It continues to take over headlines and raise awareness on police brutality and inequality. However, the movement has met resistance from the All Lives Matter group. This group thinks that Black Lives Matter is a movement to express hatred towards other races. However, statistics, the views of fellow citizens, and the overall purpose of the Black Lives Matter movement, can prove that the movement wasn 't meant to express hate on other races and that we need to support the movement instead of going against it.
In History, I’ve always learned about the lives of black people. How their freedom was limited or nonexistent, the situations and harsh treatment they received every day, how since the beginning of time we were slaves to either our own people or different people. My mother talked about how our lives were different now; but still constantly reminded me to be grateful for what we have today. I thought that changed; that our lives were much better and we have as much freedom as the dominant race. The February of 2012, black lives were brought to media once again; and changed mind completely.
“Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic melting pot, in things racial we have always been and continue to be, in too many ways, essentially a nation of cowards,” Attorney General Eric Holder. I do believe that as a nation, we do steer away from controversial subjects as race, racism, and the old times of slavery. As a nation we have come a very good way from the past, slaves are no longer a part of everyday life, and for the most part there are equal opportunities, and laws for equal opportunities for anyone of all races, colors, and ethnic backgrounds. Through the years African Americans have been a target for slavery at the beginning of times to the still racial slurs people utter under their breaths. We as a nation need to come together as one and realize the considerable experiences African Americans have been through.
Civil rights have been a hot-button issue/topic in this country for decades. For many years people were treated differently because of either their skin color. These people had fewer job opportunities, were often paid less than their white counterparts, and even for a time were sent to separate and often worse schools, and were forced to use different bathrooms and drinking from separate water fountains in public. It was very difficult for blacks at this time in this country, but help would soon bring relief to these people. The passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, brought some forms of equality to this country, and the Supreme Court Case of Brown v. Board of Education, ended segregation and allowed blacks and whites to attend the same schools. While there have been great strides towards equality in this country, some still feel that not enough is being done and that blacks still feel marginalized by society and aren’t given the same opportunities as their white counterparts. Many are still to this day, even with laws in place to protect them, they are still often overlooked for job opportunities and promotions within the work environment. One such area where this happened was in the city of New Haven and their team of firefighters. In this instance, a few members of the team, which happened to be black, were not given a fair chance of getting a promotion to the ranks of captain or lieutenant. What followed was a mess that the city and officials could have easily
