Karen Healy goes to great lengths in chapter one to ensure readers are aware of why she is discussing the importance of social work and how you approach it. The author emphasizes the importance of knowing your skill set, how you developed it and what led you to be there in the first place. Healy explains throughout chapter one that our sense of purpose can be shaped from a variety of sources from taking in stuff from those around us, using critical reflections, seeing how others see us and how we see ourselves. The author explains the very valuable side of the service from the users perspective. As Maiter and Trotter discovered in their research referenced by Healy, "The research indicates that service users often have many fears about, and negative perceptions of, social work services. These fears include that they will be humiliated, judged, their wishes ignored and that they will be disrespected" (Healy,p.8) It 's important to realize how much a social worker can alter that perception by providing a genuine, engaging and empathetic experience. Healy talks a lot about our professional base and how it is the knowledge and skills that we have as social workers. According to Healy this book has been based on 3 perspectives and theories, the critical social work theory, the systems theory and the strengths perspective (Healy, p.12) The author stresses critical social work theory is the basis of the book, it 's simply that it 's important to treat people well, Systems theory
In this essay I will discuss what learning from K216 materials has been useful to me whilst working with vulnerable and/or disadvantaged service users in my student placement, and what learning I have applied to my practice. Throughout I will look at how my learning informed what I decided to do, how I went about doing this and my understanding of the practice. I will discuss learning in respect of two areas of social work, which are ‘Communication’ and ‘Working collaboratively’. For ‘Communication’ I will focus on communication with service users with disabilities and/ or additional needs and I will explore a case of a mother who I had a telephone call with who was in crisis and in a highly emotional state. With ‘Working collaboratively’,
1). In the face of social justice issues, I show up not only as the activist social worker but as an ally to those who face such injustices. I show up ready to support those who need to be heard and held up so that their voices may be heard. I show up ready to echo the needs of the oppressed and marginalized. While I too feel excluded from various communities and often feel that I have little privilege to support those in need, I utilize what privileges I do have such as social position, and gender. In representing the issues of social justice in my professional life I turn to these privileges and seek the support of other allies with greater privilege and knowledge to enhance our strengths and efforts, while supporting and echoing the needs of the oppressed and marginalized. I attempt to educate others on the topics of
This section of the paper will discuss the definition of social work, values associated with social work and arguments for and against the use of systems theory in social work practice. Social work can be described as a field of study that encompasses individuals and their environment. Social work can be defined as work trained professionals do to elevate stressors of individuals so they may become more self-sufficient and empowered to live to their fullest potential.
It took a long time and a lot of careful thinking to decide to pursue the Social Work field of education now. Although I attempted to pursue my Masters in Education 16 years ago, I discontinued that program due to the realization that I was not mature enough to keep balancing school demands along with my full time workload. Reflecting back, I was more pursuing my Masters for the purpose of pleasing my family considering I was the first female in my family to even graduate with a Bachelors here in the United States. Fast forward, 16 years later, I’ve concluded that furthering my education with a Masters in Social Work is the best match and fit to continue enhancing my career in social services. As a Mental Health Rehabilitation Specialist providing supported employment services, I support and guide my clients by taking steps toward their own career goals. I have found my purpose in life, which is to support transformation in others by connecting any type of community resource they may need in order to overcome their barriers toward their career choice. I have seen first hand how “work is therapy” and knowing that I supported and contributed to my client’s career plan, gives me the drive to keep enhancing my skills to impact my community even more. I am highly motivated to pursue a Masters in Social Work so I may have the access and ability to build and manage a team or organization that is just as passionate in supporting and guiding others. I’m also eager to provide

Application to Our Work: In what ways does this idea apply to your work with families and groups?
The journey towards the attainment of the Bachelor of the social work degree has been an enlightening and educational experience, as the individual is exposed to the realities of many social and political issues in the society. As a student, I ventured into the degree, with minimal insight as to how the degree can influence and shape the way I perceive the social world, and the way I relate these matters to myself. However, throughout my endeavour, which encompasses years of theoretical studies, and two intensive placements at two drastically different organisations, I believe I have accumulated the bare minimal knowledge to possess a solid foundation about the unfairness and inequality that people in disadvantaged conditions face. Social workers are predominantly found in welfare organisations which Howe (as cited in Limber, 2015) suggested largely influences the practice, direction and values of the social worker, and impacts on their ability to act autonomously (Lymbery, 2015). During my placements, there was a dominant theme that frequently stood out and enticed my attention. This was the accepted practice of focusing on the individual’s problem, as opposed to the social problems that existed and the lack of acknowledgement about the social restrictions of the human agency that limited self-determination. The realization that organisations were managed this way was important in ensuring that I made a proactive effort to understand and untangle the reasons behind such
Social Work has been a profession for more than one hundred years. It made its way through countries and language barriers and became an important part of many communities. Social Workers have been fighting injustices and creating safe spaces for communities worldwide. Many want to be Social Workers because they like to help others, while many want to be Social Workers because Social Workers have been such an important part of their lives. In addition too being a part of families and communities, Social Workers had a large play in history and the change of ideologies that were originally discriminatory. These Social Workers fought hard for rights all over the world. In this paper, I will discuss how Social Work became a part of my life and what strengths I have to offer, the way I define Social work, as well as how it relates to class readings.
As a mother of three, I am used to looking after my children and often forget about myself/ health. However, as a Master of Social Work Student (graduate school student), I learned to look at my own well-being; physical and mental health. If I am not healthy/ well, I would not be able to properly care for others.
In order to be the most effective social worker we can be, it is critical to reflect and analyze who we are and what has happened to us in our personal lives. Doing so will help us be mindful of how these things may impact our work with our clients. The Adverse Childhood Experiences survey is one way of assessing where we may have to start addressing our personal experiences. Once we are aware of how our experiences impact our work, we can strive to protect our clients, so that we can provide the quality of services our clients deserve.
“Social work is the professional activity of helping individuals, groups, or communities enhance or restore their capacity for social functioning and creating societal conditions favorable to this goal (Kirst-Ashman 2017)”. “Social welfare is a national system of programs, benefits, and services that help people meet the social, economic, educational, and health needs fundamental to the maintenance of society (Kirst-Ashman 2017)”. Many people agree that social welfare and social work is very important, but there are some who do not understand their purpose or what they do. This leads to a lot of confusion and uncertainty, and it shows with how people treat social workers. One major issue the U.S. is facing is abortion. There’s two sides to
The basis of social work in the society at large trying to manage the effects of poverty and inequality. Social work has a complex connection with charity work. A social worker is someone who engages with people to address their life challenges and improve their wellbeing. These rights include free speech, freedom of harm, rights to an education, rights to healthcare, and rights to housing and protection (Global Definition of Social Work). Social workers are very passionate in what they do, and they make sure they carry
