Aveyard defines a literature review as a comprehensive study and interpretation of literature that relates to a particular topic. In his view, undertaking a literature review takes two steps: identifying a research question and searching for and analyzing relevant literature using a systematic approach to answer this question (Aveyard, 2010). Hart (1998) put significance on a review of the literature because without it researchers would not acquire an understanding of the topic, of what has already known, how it has been researched, and what the key issues are. Hart also offers his criteria of the literature review: ‘’The literature review as a piece of academic writing, must be clear, have a logical structure and show that you have acquired a sufficient range of skills and capabilities at an appropriate level.’’ (Hart, 1998) Different literature requires different ways to review. There are research literature and theoretical literature, the former refers to the literature that reports empirical research results, and the latter includes relevant concepts, relevant theories, and theoretical contexts. Critical thinking will be employed to minimize bias from the literature review, which should provide a more solid springboard for the dissertation process. The intellectual standards that will be employed are clarity, accuracy, precision, relevance, depth, and breadth. Critical thinking should result in crucial questions and issues for potential research and the ability to articulate them clearly and accurately (Elder & Paul, 2008; “Public library,” 2013). In addition, before initiating a literature review, the focus, type, scope and academic discipline of articles will be determined (“Strategies for Writing,” n.d.). Focus will consider the thesis, predicament, or research question that will be researched. Type will determine if the search will highlight theory, methodology, or the kind of study, that is, qualitative or quantitative research. Scope will establish sources that will be considered such a range of research dates. Choosing an academic discipline such as business or psychology will help focus the search on literature germane to the dissertation goal (“Strategies for Writing,” n.d.).
Daymond et al (2011) were of opinion that literature review of a research should be done using a wide range of high quality literatures. On the other hand, Creswell (2007) argued that although an extensive literature review is important, outdated literatures could affect the result and findings of the study. For example, some did not contain the full articles while others did not meet the year of publication or where not peer reviewed. As a result, approximately half of the articles where not reviewed. The major limitation of the approach used was that most sources were not used. The implication for future evidence search would be to access more search engines and finding a way to acquire full articles.
