Belgians ruled over the DROC, then the Congo, and used their natural resources for their own financial benefit. In Adam Hochschild’s book King Leopold’s Ghost, he wrote, “For Europeans, Africa remained the supplier of valuable raw materials – human bodies and elephant tusks. ...frequently described by the phrase that says more about the seer than the seen: ‘the Dark Continent,’” (Hochschild). Imperialism, in turn, has origins of its own. The Europeans at some point became more advanced with their tools and society than other civilizations. Because of their geographic location, Europeans were able to use tools and create new inventions faster than other groups of people. This allowed them to easily take over areas of Africa with their superior technology, (Guns, Germs, and Steel, Diamond). Because the European imperialists were able to control the Congo, they used the resources for their own financial benefit and did not choose to think of the citizens in the country. After leaving, the DROC was in shambles and its leaders did not do much to change their situation. This has caused a long drought of substantial

However, imperialism helped the native Congolians by providing modern forms of infrastructure. Before the discovery of the African Congo, life in Africa was subpar.
In the Congo, many people were affected by Imperialism in many different ways. For some people were shamed, had curfews, and some were often banned from “white” people establishments. Therefore, it was like segregation to the Congolese people. They had religion forced onto them by the Roman Catholic and some Protestant Churches. However, they gained formal education systems and slowly improved their healthcare. The government even sponsored teaching a handful of languages in the schools. When imperialism

By the end of the 19th century, all of Africa with the exception of Liberia and Ethiopia was divided amongst European powers. During that time, the Belgium government had no interest in imperializing Africa except for their King, Leopold II. Due to lack of support from the Belgium government, King Leopold independently gained private possession of the Congo. While King Leopold embodied the ideas of imperialism, he did not

This was much to the benefit of the native people throughout the colonization of Belgian Congo. Medicine and education
aggression was most prominent in King Leopold’s Belgian Congo, the setting for Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. The Belgian Congo was different from other colonies in that it “had nothing to sell. [It] was not interested in turning Africans into consumers but only in using their forced labor” (Hawkins 291).
