Imperialism has been a topic covered broadly in this class. We have learned about many nations who strive to expand through their military powers. Britain and Germany seem to be the best examples of Imperialism that we have learned about, especially before WW1. The imperialist practices of these huge world powers have created and impacted policies around the globe. From The Origins of the Modern World, we learned that Great Britain was the strongest world power before the war. Britain had possession of Canada, India, Australia, New Zealand, etc. Most of these colonies were acquired quite easily because of their power. British imperialism was focused on expansion through world trade. Britain had a powerful navy and a large feet of war vessels. By 1914 America was a very imperialistic nation, and had control of the Philippines, Guam, Puerto Rico, and islands in the Pacific.

With the late 19th century came a great change in the ideas of expansionism in the United States, but also a continuation of its ideals. The idea of imperialism, where the United States would extend its power around the globe, stood in contrast with the original Manifest Destiny ideal of the 1840s and 1850s when America was expanding west from ‘sea to shining sea.’ However, the inherent social and cultural sentiments were still present in the late 19th century expansionism, though the economic and political purposes had changed.

What were some of the political, economic, social, intellectual, and military factors that explained the sudden increase in the pace and importance of European imperialism in the late 19c? The essential impetus was the Industrial Revolution which led to a search for (and control of) sources of raw materials and captive markets to sell manufactured goods, and become a world power with the most colonies and most money.

The standard way of thinking about the topic of imperialism is that the British seized other peoples lands without considering how the people felt, but many other countries followed in the footsteps of the British. Other countries saw that they had expanded and were gaining territory, and wanted to expand also. There were many reasons as to why imperialism became popular, money, land, education, resources, because of this many people were greatly affected by imperialism. Some of the main people affected were the British, the Germans, and the people living in imperialized countries.

Being superior and owning the most money was a big competition in the 19th century. The New Imperialism takes on effects in the late 19th century this is when there is an interest or wanting to gain a imperial territory, Imperialism is also consider to be when there is a desire to control a trading routes and resources in a nation. A perfect example of the New Imperialism is called the "Scramble for Africa", this is when Europe tries to takes control over Africa. By laying the usual colonial responsibilities aside, the European empires could gain more money in the short term from their possessions without the financial investments. This flavor of imperialism was practiced when it followed a period of direct imperialism. Elsewise it was in danger of losing the political capital that such systems relied upon. Due to its inherent western concepts, the ideals of free trade required the subsidiary partner of the indirect imperialism required a firm alliance in culture and political goals and views to be successful when opposed to direct imperialism.

As many people know, Imperialism has shaped the culture and customs all over the world. Imperialism is the dominance of one country over another politically, economically or socially.
