THE IMPACT OF BOKO HARAM INSURGENT ON ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES IN NIGERIA
Boko Haram is an affiliated branch of the Islamic State (ISIS) of Iraq and the Levant. It has been performing its atrocities in Nigeria since 2009, during regime of Dr Good Luck (Past President). The name of the group means "Western" or "non-Islamic" education is a sin. The group is active in the northern part of Nigeria, and their primary objective is to impose Islamic law as the only law in Nigeria.
The official name of the Boko Haram group is actually Jama 'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda 'awati wal-Jihad, which in Arabic means "People of the Sunnah (the practise and examples of the Prophet Muhammad 's life) for Preaching and Jihad Group".
Ironically, they do not believe in technological development and this is one of the reasons why they lack the ability to see things in different perceptive. In the early days, people refused to take their cassava to their places for processing because they primitively used mortar and pestle to grind their cassava, pepper and so many other things, instead, to where machines will be used to grind them.
ANALYSIS OF THE CRISIS
A depth interview was carried out with a final year political student at the University of Lagos who studied Boko haram insurgent as a course in school, he explained to me how the crisis impacted negatively the economy of Nigeria and the safety of the inhabitant. He explained “western influence on Islamic society is viewed as a
In Nigeria, a student detonated himself during a school assembly. Many students were killed and many more were injured. The student was part of a group called Boko Haram. The group has been recruiting young people. The suicide by the student was part of the violent campaign to get more people recruited for Boko Haram which does not like the Nigeria's school system. The group wants Islam to be prominent in peoples lives. The social issues between Nigerian schools and Boko Haram led to the suicide bomber detonating during
The Boko Haram sect in Nigeria has been a huge problem for the country in the past, and the threat is only growing. This group is considered responsible for a handful of government attacks, targets on the United Nations, and often churches who undermine the Islamic religion. Their actions have spawned from the idea that their country is controlled by “fake Muslims”, and aim to create an Islamic nation ruled with Sharia law.
In a different universe, imagine being alone with lots of electronics, but little to no way to communicate with another person. Would that still make you content? The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a classic American novel set in the roaring twenties, a time known for its parties and cultural changes. The book is about Jay Gatsby, a wealthy man who throws lavish parties, as he tries to win his former love, Daisy Buchanan. Despite all the wealth and glamour, there are a series of unfortunate events waiting to happen.
Different sources have different causes of what they say was the motivation for Boko Haram’s attacks. Some sources say it was the killing of their leader in 2009 and some even say that the it was due to global warming within that country, but whatever it is, it is a big problem not only for the Islamic states but all of the other countries of the world. Their different attacks seem to show what the source of this motivation was. The group is very hard to understand in terms of their overall motivation because there is so little known information about them. Information in general is hard to come by from Nigeria. Police officers and city officials so corrupt that they give the citizens little to no information as to what is going on (Walker, 2012, p. 7). They are too motivated by their own selfish goals. The Boko Haram group itself has given no really helpful information as it has denied bombings and other terroristic activities.
As per the Canadian history, it is believed that Canada was first settled down by First Nations, Inuit, Metis and Europeans, who suffered greatly during and after the establishment of Europeans. These were highly organized societies; hence, they had the mentality of changing and incorporating the Aboriginal peoples into the mainstream society way of life. (Horner J. 40) It was during this process and after the establishment of a Canadian Government, that Aboriginal peoples were discriminated, and treated very unfairly. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada brings about an enormous part of this discrimination and Canadian Aboriginal History.
The Al-Shabaab is regarded as one of the most dangerous African terrorist organizations. Al-Shabaab is a multiethnic militant group out of Somalia that uses many terrorist tactics in attempts to gain control over the country of Somalia. They use many forms of terrorism that include ideological revolutionary, dissident, and nationalist terrorism, as they have the motive to gain power over a territory by overthrowing the government. The Al-Shabaab is suspected to have taken part in many terrorist attacks, including the 1998 United States embassies bombings. The motive behind their violence is their goal of creating an Islamic state in Somalia, which they believe is morally justified by the ideological beliefs. An important psychological
This article is about the mistreatment of people fleeing from Boko Haram who thought that the Nigerian soldiers would save them. As hundreds flee from Boko Haram claimed territories, Nigerian soldiers are picking them up and holding them as prisoners in detention centers, claiming to be trying to protect others from extremist claiming to be victims. This has lead to some accusations of mistreatment because these detention centers are holding men, women, and infants for months on end in unsanitary and unsafe areas. The article then explains that the Nigerian government and army are being accused of being too extreme in its persistence and ways of trying to eliminate Boko Haram. While Nigeria is struggling to handle the threat that is Boko Haram,
Today, terrorism is among the foremost issues troubling the world. Most terrorist groups are the root cause of death and destruction of property worth millions. Mainly, most terrorist groups place their belief in religion, Islam to be more specific. Though the Islamic faith is quick to separate itself from such terrorist groups, it is clear that all trace their roots to their faith. Most terrorist groups were mainly situated in the Arab world, in the Middle East. However, they have evolved and today they are beginning to take root in the world particularly in Africa. The Al-Shabaab and Boko Haram are clear examples of terrorist groups in Africa. Boko Haram in particular has been a juggernaut for the Nigerian government and the world at large. Their most recent abduction of 276 schoolchildren is a clear indication of their strength (Smith 11). As such, this paper will focus on the Boko Haram. Key to the analysis is its beginnings and history and its activities across the world. More importantly is the ways to try to deal with the growing Boko Haram Society.
Both of these events that occurred in human history caused seriously traumatic impact to the citizens, who were surrounded by all the destruction, devastation, and mayhem that resulted from it. In similar cases like these, violence is clearly not the answer. The reason being because so many innocent people get hurt and they are mostly the people who would never cause any harm in the first place. In the situation of Boko Haram and his beliefs, he wanted a nation that was entirely Islam and any country or person who was against it was his enemy, which resulted in most of the Nigerian population being eliminated from existence. In relation is the Holocaust, which had Germans disliking Jews because they were seen as “inferior” towards the Germans
Isis (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) is a Muslim jihadi extremist group and self proclaimed caliphate, which is run by Sunni Arabs from Iraq and Syria. As of early 2015, Isis has had control over numerous territory in Iraq and Syria as well as minor territories in Libya and Nigeria. The group has been designated as a terrorist organisation by the UN, EU, UK, USA, India, Australia, Canada and many more Western Countries. More than 60 countries around the world are directly or indirectly engaged in war with Isis.
One of the reasons that Boko Haram has come to Cameroon is because they want to establish an Islamic state in that area. Establishing an Islamic state in that area is a solution for problems that the founders of Boko Haram saw. “Bad governance, corruption, persistent economic hardship, and rising inequality have fostered the growth of radical extremist groups” (Schultz). The founders of Boko Haram saw these problems and their solution was to try to create an Islamic state. The Islamic state that they wanted to create stretched across eastern Nigeria, northern Cameroon, and south-western Chad (“Cameroon”). The founders of Boko Haram saw a problem and tried to fix it, but they did it in a very bad way, and this bad way caused them to be in Cameroon.
How can somebody who sucks her mother’s breast will ask why do you need Biafra? Everybody knows this very historical fact that Nigeria preside on the memory of over four million Biafrans who died on genocide under the banner of Biafra and they are doing nothing about it after 45 years. We all are aware that Nigeria unleashes harsh economic measures that have caused so much unsustainable daily living and self-reliance in Biafra land that today over 15 million Biafrans are in diaspora. We do understand the systematic killing of Biafran youths in the Nigerian Army and prisons. The rampant killing of Biafrans by Almajiri in the North in the name of religious differences means absolute rejection. What if Boko Haram is killing our people on a daily basis?
In the year 2002, Mohammed Yusuf founded Boko Haram. With the goal of establishing an Islamic state, Yusuf recruited surrounding youth, and less than well to do Muslim families from the surrounding areas. For seven years, Yusuf governed the sect in a relatively peaceful manner, preaching detestation for Westerners and their involvement in government, but never erupting into violence. In 2009, in response to what members of Boko Haram believed to be the use of excessive force by police officers, the group launched a widespread attack on police stations, killing many and injuring many more. Since then the group has evolved initially moving to carrying out assassinations of police officers then attacking prisons releasing inmates then bombing
Boko Haram is now the biggest problem in Nigeria today. They have caused children to see education as corruption and are causing one of the poorest places in Nigeria to suffer. The schools have been ransacked and blown apart, teachers have been shot to death, and kids kidnapped and have been either raped or put into Boko Haram. The corrupted officials running the local government have now supported them in secret; this is a problem that needs to be solved because now they will have no education to rise against them and take them down. Their future could now be in jeopardy because they will not have the right information to make Nigeria into the beautiful country it is.
Thompson (2013) viewed that people join Boko Haram out of boredom and the desire for an action packed adventure. They join in pursuit of an adventure viewed as a “just cause” but others may be motivated mainly by a desire to use their special skills e.g. bomb-making skills (Thompson 2013). Thompson explained that judging from evidences collected by the State Security Service, those who join Boko Haram are similar. For example, Habibu Bama is a dismissed soldier from Borno State and Kabiru Abubaka Dikko AKA Kabiru Sokoto also a dismissed soldier. According to Thompson (2012), violent encounters with security forces also, often serve as motivating factor for an already socially estranged person to join a terrorist group like Boko Haram (Thompson 2012), he threw more light on this point by saying Human Rights Watch researcher Eric Guttschuss analyzed Yusuf successfully attracted followers from unemployed youth "by speaking out against police and political corruption."
