Immigration Changes In America

The unaccepting nature of US citizens is one flaw in the idea of America’s wide open golden doors. The blame and stereotypes added to an immigrant’s burden prevents them from ever feeling welcome and eliminating the gap between immigrants and Americans born in the US.

Attention: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free” (Emma Lazarus). This sentence can be found in the poem “The New Colossus,” written by Emma Lazarus in 1883. It can also be found inscribed on the Statue of Liberty towering over the New York Harbor, a bright beacon symbolizing the freedom and democracy we hold so esteemed in America. Immigrants founded the United States and immigrants are arguably who made our nation so great. However, when immigrants do not follow the process to acquire legal citizenship into the United States is when the problems arise.

During the late 1800s, inhabitants from all parts of the world made the decision to leave their jobs and homes to immigrate to the United States. They fled rising taxes, famine, crop failure, land and job shortages, to come to the United States. Perceived to be one of the greater countries for economic opportunity, many sought freedom from religious and political persecution. Around twelve million immigrants arrived in the United States between 1870 and 1900. Before the Civil War, the majority of immigrants were from Germany, Ireland, and England. On July 4, 1776 America became free to be its own nation without a king to tell us what to do. Soon after we separated with England we started welcoming new people to America and started making it diverse. People came from all over the world for the same reason the original colonists did, in search of the “American Dream.” The American Dream is the idea that everyone can achieve success and prosperity through hard work, motivation, and determination. People were coming here to escape their country and join ours. We were known as the country that everybody could be what they wanted to be. America has dropped to a point of where undocumented immigrants are not as welcomed as they used to be. In the poem “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus it shows how America used to welcome everyone from all around the world and kept the American Dream alive. Americans want to limit the number of immigrants they are allowed in the United States and if this continues we will be hurting America.

Also during the slavery time africans and black people immigrated to canada to live a free life. Now they get money to help them start a new lifestyle and so they don't end up being homeless. They also immigrate so they can get better jobs and more money to provide for their kids and family so they DON'T go into debt or be poor. Immigration has changed the united states because of the people that came here from other countries. First, since people have come the food has gradually changed like I the mall there is a Chinese place and wraps and different food from other countries. I have an encounter of immigration because My friend Dragana her parents come from Macedonia and they have food from their culture and different life style and I get to experience it when we hang out. Another reason immigration has changed the U.S is that I see a lot of Chinese people work at Chinese restraints and for an example there is a janitor in our school that is an immigrant from a place in Africa and people from Mexico been a lot of new Chinese restraints and burrito places.

Immigration, the word that seems to keep coming up on the news every day. Many people around the United States think of different things whenever this word comes to mind. Throughout the years, the immigration system has tremendously changed, and so have some people’s views on immigration. People no longer come from crowded boats, but some still get treated as they do. People no longer have to take an education test or medical test, yet if one lacks in those areas they get treated similarly to how they were treated during the Progressive Era. America has changed, but it hasn’t really changed in ways. America may have replaced some laws, but it’s new laws have a similar impact as the older ones did. Although some of America’s immigration policies have changed over the years, immigration to America still remains a broken system. Immigration laws still prevent people from getting jobs, discrimination towards immigrants is still around, and many immigrants are not given good jobs or living conditions.

Over the past few years people have made it abundantly clear that they feel that the laws involving illegal immigrants in our country should change and i'm here to tell you my side of the argument and how we can compromise on these problems to provide a steady work environment for the people that are leaving their country to seek work.

Clearly this is only an illusion as so many immigrants found out after they were stripped of their dignity just after stepping on to American soil. The U.S. has gotten better, however controversy has arisen about immigration. About whether immigrants are beneficial to the United States. This controversy, conflict with the beliefs Emma Lazarus had when she wrote the sonnet, The New Colossus. She believed that America would be a better place than all of the Old World countries. She believed that America would protect and house immigrants and serve as a protector not seeking to be selfish. America has not turned out according to Emma’s beliefs, but instead, has shown a blatant shunning of any immigrant it has deemed hazardous. This act is ironic, because America was built by immigrants. “There should not be a question of legal or illegal immigration. People came and immigrated to this country from the time of the Indians. Immigration has always been a complex issue in the United States. Previous and current administrations have had great difficulties in setting policies and programs in place to address this problem. During the course of American history, laws were enacted to address such issues. There were numerous legislative milestones in regards to immigration in the United States. In order to understand the current issues regarding immigration, we have to look back at the policies that were in place along with the goals that they intended to serve. Has the way we see immigration change? Immigration laws have effected many illegal immigrants that live and work in the United States by changing the status of the undocumented good and bad. With also affecting their children’s education, too many parents is the number one priority to their children, but what is the next step after high school and starting a career, immigrants face problem such as being a citizen in applying for college, scholarship, financial aid and work permits.

The Act failed to create a suitable legal avenue for immigrants to gain entry. In fact, the changes to the law practically set the stage for an even higher number of illegal immigrants to come to this country. Even though these changes were intended to signify a step forward in the immigration process. They did not deal directly with the underlying issues that continue to plague the immigration system today. There are still long lines due to backlogged dates for visa and deportation hearings. There are fewer and fewer employment-visas available for workers who are less skilled and ultimately will have a more difficult time entering the country. After the election there were thousands who suggested that the United States had some harsh immigration laws, making it strikingly difficult for immigrants and refugees alike to enjoy the freedoms and human rights that the United States offers. However, in 2015 the United States accepted over 1-million permanent migrants which made it the #1 country for immigration. At the same time, the United States also held onto its top spot as one of the top refugee resettlement countries4. Comparatively, countries such as Japan showed only 1.7% of the total population (2010) as being foreign and have immigration policies that have drawn heavy criticisms24,36.

“ Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore; send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” In 1883, Emma Lazarus wrote this poem portraying the Statue of Liberty inviting immigrants to America. This country has acted as a shelter for those who seek it and desire to start their life over. America has been unified since the beginning. Throughout centuries many societies have been subjected to persecution, however, the United States of America has prevailed; allowing migrants from all corners of the world to create a community unified by their differences. America is a unified country because it allows people of different cultures to share their beliefs, share their emotions, and provides the same opportunities for all to fulfill the American Dream.
