Immigrants Vs Refugees

When one looks through the history of the last century, many great atrocities can come to mind. However, the one that is the most common is that of the Holocaust during World War II. People often wonder how something like this could have been allowed to happen. These same people wonder this without realizing that something similar has happened, right within their own shores. Not only this, but they do not realize how previously close we could become to having this happen again.

Through out history there’s a ground breaking event that forces society to reform its beliefs. The Holocaust was one of these events, refugees were persecuted in a number of ways and society had a choice to help, become isolated, or to confirm any persecution as ok or right. In every choice our society has depicted that there's a right and a wrong decision to everything; it was wrong for U.S legislation to not give their best efforts to help refugees of the Holocaust it lead to future prejudices and the suffering of millions.

“Even when a new country could be found, a great deal of time, paperwork, support, and sometimes money was needed to get there. In many cases, these obstacles could not be overcome,” (“Holocaust Memorial Council”). When the Holocaust began, the Jews didn’t think Hitler would replenish the leading spot with violence and discrimination. The Jews discovered how difficult it was to immigrate during the Holocaust when the Evian Conference of 1938 took place. This conference made it evident that almost every country that they could have gone to didn't change any immigration policies to let them in (“Holocaust Memorial Council”).

In “Immigrants” by Pat Mora, they are struggling to achieve acceptance and help their family have a better future. The parents are trying so hard to associate their children with “American traditions” and still are left wondering if they will be accepted in America. In my opinion nothing is worth loosing your actual culture or values. They are literally willing to do whatever it takes to transform heir children into American traditions. “Feed them mashed hot dogs and apple pie” (Line 2 Mora). Today the White House says the U.S. is preparing to accept at least 10,000 Syrian refugees in the next year, which will hopefully begin October 1. The Syrians can 't go back to where they come from because their houses are destroyed and they have no shelter. The U.S. today is hesitant to let the refugees into our country because they don’t know if they could be part of a terrorist group, therefore the Americans during the Holocaust didn’t want to let the Jews into the country because they were imaged as bad people. Yet Americans during the Holocaust did not interfere with what was happening in Germany because if America decided to do so, in response we would have also become the main target because we let the Germans into America. So, to make the case of how America could have responded differently would be entirely ineffective. In today’s society many people can see the similarities between the Holocaust and the way we; as a country, treat others from foreign countries. From the Great Depression to the almost “Great Recession”, and the isolation America wanted from other countries to the Muslim Ban that recently had been implemented here within the U.S. Where Nazi Antisemitism and the American Antisemitism that occurs here on a daily basis towards other religious communities and cultures. The real question that needs to be asked is, what can America, and the people of America, do to prevent something like the Holocaust from ever happening

While the issue of asylum seekers has mainly challenged Australia’s political power and resources, the debate is mostly ethical and putting human dignity first is integral. Since the 1980s, the US government has undertaken initiatives to make its borders more non-porous to illegal immigration from its neighboring countries. The menace of illegal immigrants seeking better opportunities in the USA started reflecting in the 1970s. The migrating people are motivated by the better non-skilled or semi-skilled employment opportunities in the USA and the relatively higher remuneration for services rendered in the USA than in the neighbor countries especially Mexico (Hanson and Spilimbergo 17). Countries where these people flocked such as the California, Texas and Arizona began experiencing illegal immigrants’ populations’ menace. The main efforts have been along the Mexican and Canadian borders where walking immigrants freely used to walk through. The need to secure the borders has been rising steadily. The successive governments have realized the need for secure borders and it had responded by dedicating more resources to these areas. The need to secure the USA borders has not been groundless, illegal border immigration remains to be the most potent entry point for illegal drugs, smugglers of contraband goods and criminals especially terrorists. In light of these dangerous threats that can be made possible by pours border; it is of utmost need that the U.S. government tighten our borders to neighboring countries.

The changing environment throughout time has caused many families to move out of their homelands. These families are either forced to make the decision to move out, or they move by their own desire. Migration and parenthood in a new country are significant transitions that pose stressful challenges for immigrant and refugee parents. Although living in Canada can be rewarding, however, there are challenges that immigrants and refugee face through trying to adapt to the culture of Canada. These challenges may include, battling cultural shock, Language Barriers, Misconceptions of Homeland and culture, employment, and depression.

There are approximately 43 million immigrants in the United States and about 11 million are illegal. Compared to the total American population, only seven percent of the nation’s population are non-citizens. Approximately 22 percent of inmates in federal prison are non-citizens. (Perez)

In both of these articles they talk about refugees. Some families had adjusted a new life after all the bad things that happened to them. When the refugees were being sent away, they felt queasy about where they were going. All the refugees thought they were going to get a document and be U.S. citizens. But they weren't, they were being sent to internment camps. And had to live there.

Over 300,000 refugees are waiting at the borders of our country waiting to be accepted into our country. My question is why. Why would our great country want to weaken ourselves by letting illnesses and terrorism into our country, especially when they did not help us in the past? The United States should not accept refugees because of many reasons including terrorism, stealing jobs from U.S citizens and bringing sickness and unknown illnesses into our country. Hundreds and hundreds of terrorist attacks have occurred in our country the only blameable menace are us letting in refugees in. Thousands of refugees are working immediately, and illnesses are spreading to Americans in our country as soon as these refugees enter our country. Knowing all of these issues is it really worth letting them in?
