In the book Night, author, Elie Wiesel illustrates how the Jews had their humanity crushed by the Germans by using detailed imagery. Wiesel’s purpose was to show how the Jews were treated during the Holocaust, so others could change their perspective on it. The main theme presented in this book is the loss of religion. In the beginning of the book, the main character, Eliezer stated that he “believed”, implying that he doesn’t anymore. All the Jews had some form of hope at the start, but due to the major death occurring, their hope started to fade away. Something interesting that I found in this book is that they were forced to run 42 miles, and the guards were instructed to shoot the ones who fell behind. Many men were lost in this run because of their lack of strength and endurance. To the Jews, the run was like an endless road, which could also symbolize their lives because the torturing they were going through seem never ending such as the road they were on. Many of them considered stopping running because at the time, death symbolized freedom because they knew it was the only way to escape the pain. This imagery gives the reader a strong image of what Wiesel was trying to get the reader to feel. It first stuck out to me as a glimmer a hope appearing, meaning they had almost made it through the night. That gave them the motivation to keep going. The morning star could also symbolize God as during the night, light was nowhere to be seen and hope was a thing of the past. The only thing they could see was their lives flashing before their eyes, but when the light appeared, they knew that they had done it. This made me realize how important of a role religion played back then and how people’s faith had to be stronger than ever before during that
