As evident by the title of this poem, imagery is a strong technique used in this poem as the author describes with great detail his journey through a sawmill town. This technique is used most in the following phrases: “...down a tilting road, into a distant valley.” And “The sawmill towns, bare hamlets built of boards with perhaps a store”. This has the effect of creating an image in the reader’s mind and making the poem even more real.

We often rely on imagery, a literary device that uses vivid descriptions and appeals to the senses, in our storytelling to point out the important facts in our stories. It helps our audience picture the scene and understand the severity of the situation. In my opinion, a well-written scene can be incredibly meaningful and thought-provoking with the help of imagery, sometimes even more so than a photograph. In literature, this is no different. Authors will describe characters and events in great detail when they feel it is important to the story. They will use imagery to point out character traits, themes, symbols, and motifs. A good author paints you a picture so you can imagine the places, colors, expressions, textures, with all the fine details.

Imagery is the pattern of related comparative aspects of language, particularly of images, in a literary work. Imagery plays an important role in many literary works because it paints a picture in the reader’s head so they can further understand the meaning of the work. It can be easier for the reader to decipher the theme when they can imagine the idea that is being expressed. Figurative language is a form of language use in which writers and speakers convey something other than the literal meaning of their words, and there are many different types. Figurative language helps the reader because it makes a comparison to something the might be more familiar with.

Another good example of imagery is Scannell's use of metaphors. The use of metaphors in this poem helps intensify the imagination of the reader by linking objects and actions in a familiar manner. For example, the metaphor "roundabouts galloping nowhere” is used to describe the continuous motion of the carousel ride. This metaphor is very effective as it not only describes the ride in detail but also refers to the endless struggle, disappointment and dismay those who work at travelling fairs face, their lives and careers "galloping nowhere".

The narrator portrays their relationship as a compromising union, a relationship that fears for the worse and tries hard to stay mutual. The narrator mentions, “’Tell me, Eleanor, d’you ever think of the past?’ … ‘I’ve been thinking of the past [about Lily] the woman I might have married… do you mind me thinking of the past?’ Why should I mind… doesn’t one always think of the past?’” (Kew Gardens 1192). This dialogue is interesting because they both go on to relay what their ideas of reality are. What remains of the past Eleanor asks? They go back and forth and offer their ideas of what fulfils one’s past; “’those ghostly figures under the trees… one’s happiness, one’s reality’” (1192)? The past is important because without one, one has nothing to write about or to compare ideas and thoughts. There is no fuel to encourage change like the past of Judith Shakespeare.
