Parenting has been referred to as one of the hardest yet rewarding things a person could experience in his or her lifetime. Parenting does come with its ups and downs; parents often go through a series of emotional turmoil’s, feelings of defeat, regret, guilt and most of all fear. Right alongside of these however, parents also experience pride, joy and fulfillment. The parent and child dynamic between a mother and daughter are especially sensitive, yet the bond between a mother and daughter has been said to be irrefutable. Tillie Olsen's short story "I Stand here Ironing", Amy Tan's short story "Two of a Kind" and Alice Walker's short story "Everyday Use" provides the opportunity to glimpse into three different mother daughter relationships and the intricacy's that foster their relationships. There are many things that separate one person from another in our society one of these is our cultural differences. A person’s upbringing has a lot to do with the way that they view and interact with the world. It is the little things that we know to be a part of our lives that may differ from someone else’s. The culture that one is raised with would most likely span back hundreds of years moving through each parent and child as they move through life learning new things and adapting to their surroundings. The language we speak, the types of food we eat, our religion, and customs make up a few of the things that can be easily recognized as cultural differences. In Tillie Olsen's short story "I Stand here Ironing” the mother is a young white single mother struggling with the woes of the Great Depression, “I was nineteen. It was the pre-relief, pre-WPA world. I would start running as soon as I got off the street car.” The culture for Americans in this time period was primarily brought about from necessity as work was scarce.
