Do you know the truth about banning books? The truth is that it is ignorant. The book I Must Betray You, written by Ruta Sepetys, is an ideal example of this claim. Throughout the book, readers are taught that realizing the truth about situations can lead to questioning everything. In the book, the main character Cristian is blackmailed into becoming a spy for the corrupted government of Romania. Cristian and his girlfriend Liliana try to fight for their relationship through the duration of the story until Liliana gets a hunch that Cristian has been informing on her and her family, so she ends things. Towards the ending of the book, readers are made aware that Cristian's sister, Cici, was the one that had been informing on Liliana's family. …show more content…
Her family being questioned and Cristian really had nothing to do with each other, however Liliana joined the two ideas making this situation an analogy. This led her to believe her boyfriend had informed her to the government, causing them to question her family. Liliana subtly delivers Cristian a letter that says, “You are a liar”. You are everything I despise. You are an “informationer” (Sepetys, 118). This quote forces Cristian to recognize that Liliana thinks that he's been informing her. From Liliana's perspective, she found out the truth about Cristian. A truth that made her question their whole relationship; “It had taken years to get close to Liliana. And now she hates me. Yes. I am a naysayer. But not as much as I hated myself” (Sepetys, 121). This quote reveals that Cristian felt terrible for something he didn't even do. This leads back, and supports the theme that realizing the truth about someone or something can cause a person to question everything they know about that situation. It didn't occur to Liliana that it could be someone else that informed her family. Coming to the end of the book, it becomes apparent that Cristian's sister, Cici, has been informing on him and also Liliana's
This shows that Christine herself knows Lilian isn't the best mother due to the absence of love and nurturing. Lilian's past trauma in residential schools not only affected her, but
Beginning with the complexities of Ida’s family–including her nuclear family with the addition of her aunt Clara–and her social life and later relationships, the eldest-most narrator recalled her perspective of the significant events of the early-to-mid chapter of her lifetime and the outcomes of her relationships within. Almost directly after being introduced to Ida’s point of view, it is revealed that her aunt and best friend, Clara had, through the duration of her sister’s–Ida’s mother–illness, been impregnated with the child of her brother-in-law–Ida’s father. The impending child was to be Rayona’s mother, Christine. Subsequent to the news of
By denouncing the value of physical appearance, Roxane renders Christian an insignificant and pointless part of the composite romantic hero. Nonetheless, his death also prevents Cyrano from telling Roxane the truth and perhaps from making a moral mistake—dishonestly
How and when three of the four Mirabal sisters died is established before the book is even opened as it was a true event and it is identified in any summary of the novel. Yet the story is partially told by these three sisters anyway, creating an unbearable sense of tension throughout the book as readers wonder when they will read of their deaths. They also continually interact with Trujillo, each scene making the family’s
Because of the life that Christine leads, the role of mother and daughter are switched and Rayona often finds herself watching out for her mom. When Ray comes home from school, she would often learn that her mother had gone out to party. Times like

His response to Roxane shows he has realized that it is not him that Roxane loves, but Cyrano. Unfortunately, before Christian was able to confess to Roxane, he is shot by the opposing enemy and his life ended shortly afterwards. Christian was never able to come to his own truths before he dies, and instead he asks Cyrano to confess to Roxanne of the truth. Cyrano had the perfect chance to confess his love, but was placed in a position that would cause Roxanne more to grief. Cyrano decides to sacrifice his chance of love with Roxanne for the better of both Roxanne and Christian.
Lily starts off stuck living in an unloving, abusive household and decides to free herself from the negative atmosphere that she had been living in her whole life. Lily is perpetually abused by her father. He forces her to kneel on Martha White's, gets exasperated every time she speaks, and yells at her for no reason. Lily is not the only one noticing the terrible treatment, Rosaleen does too. Once after Lily had to kneel on the Martha White's Rosaleen said to her, “Look at you, child. Look what he’s done to you” (Kidd 25). Noticing the unloving treatment Lily gets, Rosaleen knew that their household was demoralizing place for Lily to be in, which is why she didn’t question when Lily when she later runs away. Lily one day realizes she needs to do something about her horrible life at home. While sitting in her room she hears a voice in her
Lina’s romance is subtle and delicate from the start of the book to the end. It is even more unexpected for
Rosaleen was Lily’s maid while she was living with her father, T-Ray. Lily runs away from home with Rosaleen. At first Rosaleen doesn’t know where they are going and eventually Lily tells her. This quote is said by Rosaleen when she finds out what is really going on. “I get it. You ran off ‘cause of what your daddy said about your mother. It didn’t have nothing to do with me in jail”(Kidd 53). This quote is significant because it makes Rosaleen think that Lily doesn’t really care about her. Eventually August and Lily talk about Lily’s mother. Rosaleen and August knew about Lily’s mother. This quote is said by Lily while she was getting comforted by Rosaleen. “I wish you’d told me what you knew about my mother”(Kidd 264). This quote is significant because Lily realizes all the secrets that were hidden from her. Rosaleen taught Lily that the truth isn’t always great through keeping secrets from
Readers can learn about the main characters through Jaslyn. Ciaran is the CEO of a company and works in a fancy building in the city. Lara and Ciaran did, in fact, end up together—a happy ending if not for the tragic event that drove them together in the first place. It remains unclear if Jaslyn is aware that Lara was in the car that killed her mother, but it appears that she is not. It also becomes clear that Claire and Gloria solidified a strong bond after the night they spent listening to classical music in Claire’s apartment.
Cyrano and Christian learned this the hard way. As each letter arrived Roxane fell more and more in love with the writer. When Christian and Cyrano go to war, she follows them there to talk to Christian about “his” letters. She says, “Now, ‘tis yourself that doth outshine yourself; And for your soul alone I love you now..” (Rostand 151).
The story is told from his point of view thus allowing one to see how he talks about Christina and Stella to his ex-wife and "She," the paramour whom he now lives with.

Celie also values her sister Nettie greatly and protects her when it comes to their step-father, Alphonso raping the girls. Celie says “I ast him to take me instead of Nettie while our new mammy was sick.” the casual tone of the preceding line adds to Celie's lack of self-worth; she is so used to being raped by Alphonso that it no longer makes any difference to her. As Celie transitions to the Mister’s household, she is still treated with disrespect by the Mister himself and even one of his sons. In a letter to God, she writes “I spent most of my wedding day running from the oldest boy… He picks up a rock and laid my head open.” Celie grows older in this household and submits to more abuse from her new husband.
