I. Introduction
When I hear the words ”bad foods”, I always think of cakes, muffins, ice-cream and so on. But there is something that is almost always there, but it is often hiding. We put it on our fries, on nearly every single protein, and we use it when we boil water. Have you guessed what it is? Salt. It is always there, but we might not always know that it is there (Farley). It is one of those things that we don’t always see, but will affect us in the long run. But why is it that our parents tell us to “not put so much salt on our foods?” Every year, scientists study salt and sodium to see what really is so bad about it and why it is such a big issue for our health. In the case of salt, I think that it is definitely scientists that

For example, a main course at a restaurant often contains more salt then what is recommended to eat for a whole day, and salt is often added to give a nicer texture and not for taste purposes (Farley). More than 80% of the salt that Americans intake, comes from either packaged food or foods that we eat at a restaurant (Farley). That is why it is so hard to go on a “low-salt-diet” or try to eat no salt at all. Doctors and health experts like Farley, keep asking food companies to cut down on salt, but so far it hasn’t been easy. Because so many people are today suffering from high blood pressure, I think it’s necessary that restaurants and other food companies cut down on salt.
III. Causes diseases
“Hypertension afflicts 67 million Americans, including nearly two-thirds of people over age 60,” says Thomas A. Farley. And according to him and other health experts, this is no surprise because of how high the salt intake is. Hypertension (high blood pressure), is when the force of blood pushing against your blood vessel walls are above the normal range (Cleveland Clinic). When you eat too much salt that contains a lot of sodium, it makes your kidney need to hold on to more water, and this is what causes high blood pressure. When your kidney filters out your water, it does it by osmosis or diffusion. When there is too much sodium in the unwanted fluids, it messes with the diffusion, and your body can not get rid of the waste. This causes high blood pressure because it
Journalist and novelist Michael Pollan writes about the trials and tribulations surrounding food in North America and raises questions regarding Western diet, which is mostly comprised of refined sugar and high fructose corn syrup and corn in general. He reiterates that chemically generated food is creating disease in North Americans; If we eliminate these factors and adopt the eating habits of less industrialized places in the world will we in our lifetime see rates of heart disease, type two diabetes and obesity decline dramatically? The western diet has evolved drastically in the last sixty years, so much so that people have become codependent on the government, dietitians and food agencies regarding their health and what to consume. The land is suffering from pesticides and singular plant farming, the alternative to this is to buy organic but at a higher price. Media has influenced the consumer to read the label and accept and trust the daily vitamin percentages on the box, as this is what is best for them. Money is the key factor in all of this and the government, scientific research and media know that, therefor the public is in for a shock when they realize that the very labels that are supposed to save them have fooled them.
Eating healthy is very important for people, and modern supermarkets can make this difficult with thousands of new products flooding the market every year. Countless numbers of the products that hit the market are considered food, nevertheless is it the food needed for proper nutrition? Most of the food that fills up the supermarket shelves each year isn’t the healthy real food our bodies need to get proper nutrition. Several edibles obtainable appear healthy or normal enough to call wholesome. Think about processed deli meats, for example, particularly the ones that say “no preservatives” on them. Several of the processed meats you find contain nitrates, a preservative. Nitrates are viewed as harmful, so people don’t want them in their sandwich meats. Hence some deli meat companies made their product more appealing to the public, by labeling “no preservatives.” This
The article Simple Rules for Healthy Eating by Aaron E. Carroll which mainly focuses on what you should and shouldn’t eat more of. It also mentions how putting salt, fats, butter, and oil into your food is a necessity. This article makes me think about how eating heavily processed foods may be causing the worst health outcomes. I agree with what is being said in this article because the author list most of the food products that may be causing you or a loved ones to have health problems. Also, it mentions when eating at a restaurant you should take into consideration that not all of your food may be unprocessed. It also mentions how you shouldn’t judge what other people are eating because everyone has the rights to do what they want no matter
Should food background be important to us? The article The Pleasures of Eating by Wendell Berry states that for us to eat responsibly, we need to be free, and for us to be free we must know about our food. He says that you should not let anybody control your food and its sources or at least know where your food comes from and know what you are eating. I agree with Wendell Berry because I feel that we cannot be manipulated by the big food companies and just look at food as just food. Many food consumers buy their food without knowing about it.
Howard Moskowitz, a food industry consultant, detailed how to increase the flavor appeal of Dr. Pepper by its consumers, with large amounts sugar. In Prego spaghetti sauce, after tomatoes, sugar was made the next greatest ingredient in amount. The classic Lay’s potato chip brand included many different flavors such as chips with salt & vinegar, salt & pepper, cheddar, and sour cream flavoring. Mr. Moss goes on to describe how Frito-Lay executives hope to develop “designer sodium,” which may decrease the sodium content of their products by a considerable
In the article, “How The Food Industry Manipulates Taste Buds With 'Salt Sugar Fat'” it talks about the frightening truth that has been going on in the past few years with obesity and diabetes. Americans tend to have a huge addiction when it comes to food made with sugar, fat, salt, and as well as
Lastly, blood pressure is associated with ones diet and lifestyle. It is amazing when one’s diet consist of a high intake of salt they will shows signs of hypertension. Studies have shown that people who did not use salt shown no signs of hypertension. Monitoring the intake of salt will improve blood pressure readings drastically although; it is not the only contributor to high blood pressure. Increasing activity levels has also been known the lower blood pressure readings.
Fast food is getting better by the year. You can see how restaurants now have calorie information on the menu. McDonald 's is a good example of this, they have been reducing the intake from their products. Michael Pollan claims that processed foods are the main reason why we are being exposed to heart decease, diabetes, and cancer. Theoretically, he could be right. David Zinczenko, Mary Maxfield, and David H. Freedman are the authors that I chose to show their points on why I disagree with Pollan’s theory. David Zinczenko says that there are more ways to prevent obesity. Mary Maxfield says that we should trust ourselves and meet our needs. David H. Freedman says that Pollinites, Pollan’s followers, are confused, yet they should not be because Pollan should be able to provide them with information on what to eat, yet he can 't. Pollan tells us that we should simply avoid fast food but he lacks information that is concrete on his theory.
In our bodies, sodium forms part of the extracellular fluid; and it is important to regulate the water and fluid balance and distribution in the body, active transport of solutes, blood pressure, the balance of acids and bases, as well as nerve and muscle function. We rarely consume too little sodium, instead most people most of the time consume much more sodium than our bodies need. Usually there are so many sources of sodium in our diets that deficiencies are never the major problem. Instead, it s normally having excess sodium in our diets that is most common, and which brings along a host of health problems chiefly raising blood pressure and leading to cardiovascular / heart disease. Many foods and condiments contain sodium including the table salt (sodium chloride) that we use to cook food as well as to marinate, flavor, and preserve food. Other notable sources of sodium in our diets are milk, frozen meals, cheeses (Provolone, Swiss Yellow American, White American, parmesan, ), condiments (pickles, soy sauce, barbecue sauce, ketchup, sauerkraut), deli meats, prepackaged entrees, canned meats and vegetables,
There is presently much controversy regarding the idea of unhealthy foods and how companies shamelessly market these products to children. Individuals in the food and beverage industry constantly promote the belief that they are actively involved in providing society with important information concerning what is healthy and what is not. Moreover, most promote their products as having no negative effects on individuals who consume them, as doing otherwise would surely reflect badly on their businesses. It is generally known that children are vulnerable because they have very little experience in filtering information and food companies take advantage of this by introducing diverse methods to promote their products even with the fact that it is likely for children to get sick as a consequence.
The greatest disadvantage of the food industry is unhealthy eating. This is derived from high amounts of sodium which can be found in most fast food industries. The manner in which these foods are cooked also plays a pivotal role in the unhealthy aspects of certain menu items. Ingredients which are not understood by consumers who are becoming more health conscious has
The second problem that happens after the establishment of advertisement is the individual’s keen urge to have a huge sugar and sodium intake. Sodium is a serious rising issue, which is becoming more difficult to curb due to the food industry heavily prioritizing frozen, preserved, and processed foods. When these types of foods are ingested and have high concentrations of sodium intake, which causes people’s blood pressure to increase, and high blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke, the two leading causes of death in the United States. Average sodium intake in the U.S. is approximately 3,400 mg a day. American’s consume 50 percent more sodium than experts would recommend. Sodium is found 65 percent of the time in
Today we know that too much of a certain type of foods can have harmful
One of the main ingredients that are present in preserving processed food is salt. Salt causes water retention in our body and that causes the body unable to dissolve the salt. (Forcadilla, 2010). The build-up of salt eventually leads to high blood pressure and cardiovascular issues. WHO (World Health Organization has strongly recommended the reduction of salt intake to decrease the number of deaths from hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and stroke. (Ha, 2014) Not only does salt intake lead to high blood pressure, it also affects another organ that is vital to the human body, well, all organs are vital to the human body, but the Kidney is the organ that filters out the blood and send wastes through our Urine. Once your Kidney starts
The population of America is becoming more aware of the importance of good nutrition. Ironically the people are becoming increasingly less healthy. In the 1960's the nation ate healthier but knew less about nutrition. The foods that the teenagers consume today contributes to the increasing weight and decreasing health of the nation. Many outside factors determine the eating habits of teenagers today.
