I have a part time job at the Mars Hill Preschool here in Florence, Alabama, and this is where I completed my observations. I work in a classroom with ages seventeen months up to two year olds. Most days we have ten children, but some days we will have as many as thirteen children. As anyone could imagine with thirteen toddlers, it can be hectic and a lot is always going on. The preschool is part of the main school which happens to be a private institution which is really small for a school. Most of the families represented at the preschool have a great background and are financially stable. This aspect may differ to the outcomes of the observable behaviors, than children who come from a more troubled background. We have a lot of children whose parents are still together, but we still have a fair share of children who come from single-parent families. I would say that ninety-five percent of the parents, the father and mother, both have a career. In my class many grandparents of the children are very involved in their lives, and this is evident because we have a lot of them pick the children up-especially on Fridays. The preschool is opened from six-thirty AM to six PM. We have two main teachers who are with the children from open to two in the afternoon, and another girl and I come in at 2. We wake them up from their nap, change them, and give the snack and juice. After that, we either go outside or stay inside and play depending on the weather. We do different activities
For the classroom observation assignment I was able to observe at Stepping Stones Family Childcare and Preschool Program. I conducted observations for five hours each on the dates of September 24th and September 25th of the year 2015. This licensed home-based daycare and preschool program is located in a quiet suburban neighborhood on 4103 Bryant Street, Blasdell, New York. The facility allows for a twelve-child capacity (ages 6 weeks to 12 years with four additional school age) and is owned and founded by Kim Bannister. When I observed, there were two additional staff present. Therefore, there were a total of 3 adults and 12 children at the center when I observed. New York State Senator Marc C. Panepinto was also present on September 25th as he read to the children and toured the home. I chose this specific setting as I personally thought it would be an interesting dynamic to study how a home-based preschool program is run.
Hi everyone, I am observing on Wednesdays from 8-10 and Fridays 3-4 in Cuesta Children’s Center Preschool 2. I believe a child’s environment can affect their mood, social skills, ability to learn, mental health, and physical health. These essential elements need to be meet or it will affect their adult lives. I feel the Cuesta Center does a remarkable job of offering all of these, and has wonderful transitions throughout the day. I enjoy observing the teachers modeling acceptable class room behaviors, asking open-ended questions while using descriptive language to help to expand children’s speech, and they were engaged in the children’s presents. The government uses "handicaps" in order to make everyone "equal", which consist of masks, clown noses, sound transmitters in the ears of citizens, and bags of birdshot tied around the necks, arms, legs, or wherever, depending on how strong or intelligent the person is. Obviously this society of total equality is wrong and taken way too far. The short story “Harrison Bergeron,” written by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., teaches its readers that total equality can be harmful! For starters, I have stabilized the economy and placed the administration on sound footing.
In today's society, early childhood education programs have become an almost expected first step in every child's life. Studies have shown that when children attend they children who attend a preschool program are exposed to numbers, letter, and shapes on a daily basis. They also begin to learn many life skills, like how to socialize, share and separate from their parents. These first steps of learning are so important that now forty states in the U.S. now offer state funded pre-k programs (Kanter, 2016). With some many different preschools and early childhood programs, how do parents know if the programs are being held to a certain standard? The Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS) is one comprehensive assessment tool available. Using this tool while quietly observing a preschool classroom, will help to define areas of strength as well as areas needing to be strengthened. The scale has thirty five different areas that are divided into six subscales, that will be observed. Each question is yes or no answer to a specific question and example.
This school is a licensed childcare program and NAEYC accelerated. The center is providing child care program for children age from 2.9 to 5 years old. I am attending Duke Street Daycare, which is apart of the Collingwood Neighborhood House for the next six weeks. This is a 3 to 5 center that has 32 children, and are open from 7:30am to 6:00pm; Monday through Friday. The children are divided into two groups; the butterflies that 4-5 years of age and caterpillars that are early 3-4’s. Duke Street Daycare has a ratio of 1:8, with a total of six staff members. I have attached the center’s guidance policy and daily schedule. I am working with the 3-4’s and the schedule attached is strictly followed which is interesting to me, because the center says they believe in the Reggio Emilia approach. The center enforces guidance with positive reminders than negatively, the staff evidently practiced
For many working families paid childcare is not an option, but a necessity. Paid childcare aids parents, especially mothers, in taking care of their children while they work. As noted by Hutchison (2015), about 68% of children younger than 5 years have been engaged in non-parental care. As a person who has youngest siblings in daycare, I often think about how my nieces and nephews behave in comparison to those children who stay home. It has been empirically shown that children involved in childcare may be better prepared developmentally, emotionally and socially compared to those who stay home. However, there is literature indicates that children in daycare who require individual attention might be developmentally affected as their needs are
As a licensed family child care provider the opportunity to leave my learning environment to observe in another center is problematic due to licensing regulations. This observation took place in my own program which is licensed for eight children, currently varying in ages from 19 months of age to five years of age and has a four star bright star rating. At any given time there are always two teacher assistants on staff. I currently have four part-time assistants that work in the learning environment. As there are eight children enrolled each day the ratio must be a 2:8 ratio, therefore I must be included as part of the ratio. This does not allow me the privilege to leave my program, but it allows me to survey my teaching assistants to observe in a more objective way to collect data regarding this assignment. I asked each of them to review the questions that I was to answer and I compared them to my own data. Through this process I was able to gather information and see through a different lens. The following paragraphs will summarize what was observed and documented in Learning Lane Early Learning Program.
As my experience working with children grows, I would like to gain the skills necessary to run a preschool program. I have worked primarily with infants and toddlers in the past few months, which has become a new focus of mine. Working with such young children allows me to have a productive impact on their cognitive development. This opportunity has been a great encouragement and I hope to run an infant-toddler program within a larger school. My more immediate goals are centered around gaining experiences in different facilities. By exposing myself to different programs and their unique styles, I will be able to see how different procedures, like those for resolving conflict, work for children. With time, these ideas would be integrated into my own program.
While daycare/ childcare centers provide a safe haven for young children and left in the care of licensed caregivers, there is more to daycare then just temporary relief for parents. These facilities offer a nurturing and fun learning environment to promote curiosity, innovation, and continuous growth in developmental abilities and positivity in children, and they also have the ability to provide encouraging and engaging activities that endorse emotional, social, and academic development (Phillips 1987). Within these facilities, high quality care calls for each child reach greater levels of learning and can develop skills at their own pace under supervision.
Working as an after-school childcare supervisor I have encountered a variety of individuals and families with different experiences. One
learning to cooperate with others are important qualities. They are able to be in a safe environment rich in learning and play experiences, supervised by an adult. A preschool gives children endless opportunities to practice speaking. Teachers involve them in storytelling, creative dramatics, and other experiences that will teach them new words and offer a chance to communicate with eachother. Preschools are spacious enough to allow a lot of movement and play indoors and out. The teacher encourages children to be more independent of adults by providing them with choices. They are able to choose what they will do and for how long. They are responsible for materials and their own behavior within the limits of the teacher. A number of everyday struggles and disadvantages are experienced by single parents’ families today. The problems such families face can include expensive daycare, shortage of quality of time with children, balancing between home and work duties, and economic difficulties. Low incomes force single parents to work additional hours. This limits the time they are able to spend with their kids. The outcome is that children are left alone at home without the supervision of a grown-up or are left in daycare services for extended periods of time. People should consider co-parenting to avoid the financial and the emotional struggles single parents often face.
