• How can I demonstrate its trustworthiness? The first step is showing up and being there. By being present and actively participating, you foster a bond with others that builds trust. • How can I demonstrate I’m contemporary? Communicating effectively. Showing passion in what I do but still being considerate of those involved. Making sure my voice is heard but I still hear the voices of others. • How can I demonstrate I’m a great leader? Blending the paths of trustworthiness and becoming contemporary are steps in towards becoming a great leader. Being there and participating but when you add passion for the subject, topic or issue; individuals tend to excel beyond what is expected and achieve amazing results.
Leadership is the ability to inspire and focus members on a common goal, whether short term or long term and have the same vision. Leadership is more than telling or ordering, but having members believe and want to follow the same path as you. It’s a commitment to your people built on trust and respect. Many leaders shaped my personal leadership philosophy, to include several negative and positive experiences. Negative experiences from poor leaders and lessons learned on my part have uniquely shaped this vision. Difficult to be a good follower when your leader lacks competency, integrity, and your trust. If a leader takes credit for work other than their own, or forces and ideology onto others, but does not follow it themselves; these negative influences damage the trust and respect required by all leaders. However, positive experiences can also have a career lasting impact. A leader who inspires through personal actions and convictions can change how an entire unit operates without ever saying a word.
In the Leadership Challenge, 4th edition, it is Kouzes & Posner (2007) intention to present a road map for individuals to follow on their leadership journey. The authors stress that “leadership is not a gene and it’s not an inheritance.” Leadership they assert is “an identifiable set of skills and abilities that are available to all of us” (p. 23). They make clear that the “great person” theory of leadership is “plain wrong.” Leaders are our everyday heroes who do extraordinary things on a regular basis (p. 23).
The article I chose attempts to define a leader, the types of leaders, and the ways in which a person can be an excellent leader. The author, Tom Decotils, lists three types of leaders: An appointed leader or someone who is a leader in name, an accepted leader or a leader in practice, and an authentic leader. Decotils suggests that when obtaining a leadership role, one must strive to be an “authentic leader,” whose focus is on results by moving followers forward through teamwork and insisting on personal excellence. (Decotils, 2015, para. 1) Decotils states that an authentic leader has good intentions, grit, and a constant yearning for improvement. (Decotils, 2015, para. 5) Additionally, an authentic leader must have a good
The Standards for Mathematical Practice are essential tools that will ensure a student has everything they need to improve in their knowledge and understanding in mathematics. Thus, it is highly important that all level mathematical educators try to implement these standards into their classrooms. Ultimately, there are two sections called, “processes and proficiencies” in which the standards are derived from. The practices are depended on these two standards in the mathematics education. For the reason being, that they provide strategies that will help develop a foundation that students may rely on to comprehend and approach a problem. In other words, the standards do not show step-by-step ways on how to solve a problem, but rather help a student feel comfortable and confident in approaching, analyzing, and finishing a problem. The process standards defined by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics emphasizes a way of problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, connections, and representations. The proficiencies identified by the National Research Council include, adaptive reasoning, strategic competence, conceptual understanding, productive disposition, and procedural fluency. Knowing how beneficial the Standards for Mathematical Practice is for students, it is clear that as a future teacher I will implement these strategies in every classroom so that all my students may have a chance to prosper.
Too often we are trapped under the illusion that to be a leader you must be a famous figure, someone whom everyone knows. While being a leader may cause you to be well known, not all famous individuals are leaders. Gardner speaks the truth when he says, “Leaders come in many forms, with many styles and diverse qualities,” from quiet to courageous, from empathetic to cool and decisive. Everyone has the
The leader that I am today is confident but still inexperienced. I still have plenty to learn in order to be the leader I want to be in the future. I want to be a leader who is always striving for perfection and always keeping an open mind to the possibility of change and new leadership techniques. Nahavandi states (2006), despite our knowledge, there is also much we still do not know. Leadership as we traditionally know it—command and control—does not address the rapid social, cultural, and organizational changes that are occurring globally (Nahavandi, 2006). This is why we need to be always vigilant and open minded to the new theories that are always being introduced in this global society. According to Nahavandi (2006), future leaders must
Through history there has been many great Leaders like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Adolf Hitler. They all could appeal to people’s intelligence and their humanity. Every leader needs 3 things They possess a deep sense of humility, They radiate positive energy and They lead by example. If you want to be a good leader, make communication a priority. Explain your vision to your team, and clearly and concisely communicate what you need so you can work towards a common goal. It's important to be heard, but it's just as important to listen and ensure your message is understood. Abraham Lincoln kept his eye on what he was working toward allowed him to set aside personal differences, egos, and personal ambition and continually work towards an end that he envisioned.
The nursing profession has a long history of assessing and placing patient needs first when giving care. The tenets of nursing practice include meeting those needs using individualized care by collaborating with the patient, family, and health care team members. (American Nurses Association, 2010). The concept of transcultural nursing aligns with these tenets because it calls on nurses to provide patient-centered care by taking into account the patient’s background, beliefs, culture and values. In this paper, I will identify the factors that made it necessary to develop the transcultural nursing theory, describe the meaning of diversity and its relationship to the field of nursing, and explain three ways that I provide culturally sensitive care to my patients.
A good leader is someone who puts others before him or her, someone who cares about people and someone who does not give up easily. This is what being a leader means to me and I believe that I have all of these characteristics. When I am at school, I tend to help my friends and peers more than I help myself and I take pride in knowing that they are getting the help they need to succeed. I care about how well people do in school and I really want them to be happy and satisfied with their hard work. If I see someone struggling I know that it is my duty to assist them. When I do assist people, some of them do not grasp the lesson immediately and it takes time to get the to understand but I do not want to give up on them because it is taking too
Leaders are role models for many, who have high standards that they hold them up too. The supreme quality a leader must have is being influential, without having an impact on their follower’s lives then nothing else matters.
In order for a leader to be a leader he/she must begin with the assumption that you are the one who matters most. As a leader you have to possess that level of confidence in yourself that you are capable of leading yourself “before you can lead others”. And when you develop this belief then you are better able of affirmative influence “on others”.
You and I have the same view regarding trust in a group setting. I believe trust is important in any situation but when you are going through any form of counseling trust is key. In a group setting, it is important the group leader earn the trust of the group members. It is also important for the group members to earn the trust of each other. I believe part of this process relies on the group leader. On the group leader has built a positive rapport with the member he/she can work towards helping the other group member see value in each other's opinions.
I believe there are two mantras that one needs to implement to become an outstanding leader. Firstly, one must possess a genuine belief that no matter with whom you may have to deal, your heritage and your life circumstances are no barrier to success. Secondly, do everything, no matter how unglamorous, to the best of your ability. These may seem like small actions, but these principles are what make an ordinary leader an extraordinary one.
Leadership is something that people are born with. It is an inherent charm and it doesn’t hide even if you want to hide it. There is a leader amongst us and he or she is the one that leads other people to great things by inspiring and motivating people to do good deeds. Leadership has been described as “a process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task”. This way a leader can decide what work goes in and goes out. Good leaders in history have left a mark in walks of life. But great leaders, they’re different. Great leaders have the ability to make each and every individual re-think their life decisions and choices by
To have great leadership, there needs to be a leader-follower relationship. The relationship can’t be effective without inspiration, involvement, and support from both participants. To develop this alliance, the leader must give extra effort to reach out to followers. The only way a leader can be successful is if the follower trusts the leader. The most important characteristic of a leader is to set a good example for their followers.
