Ever since the beginning of time people have always worried about being different or being like everybody else. People have always been scared of what others might say or think even though their opinion is completely irrelevant. Therefore, many people out there choose to use what's in style such as makeup, clothes, hair, etc. rather than be who they are. People are frightened to take a stand and have a chance to be who they truly are. For example, A successful person got to where they are or were for being who they are. If someone were to follow them and try to be like that successful person they'll just be another copy. You have to be a leader and stand for what you believe in order to be successful in life. To be authentic is better
First of all, Dressing shows your own creativity. For some people creativity is all that they have. Sho why not let them show their creativity with their own clothes. It shows individuality and that is a key part of life. Along with showing creativity, if everyone was the same the world would be a boring place.
In the Ted talk, Haidt talks about how people are afraid of being different than other people surrounding them. In the Ted talk it explains, “ It's about culture. There's wonderful work by a political scientist named Karen Stenner, who shows that when people have a sense that we are all united, we're all the same, there are many people who have a predisposition to authoritarianism. Those people aren't particularly racist when they feel as though there's not a threat to our social and moral order. But if you prime them experimentally by thinking we're coming apart, people are getting more different, then they get more racist, homophobic, they want to kick out the deviants.” (Haidt.) It is not hard for one to agree on the Ted talks perspective on this topic. An individual is much more comfortable and confident when he or she is in an environment in which the people around them are just like them. When someone just moved into a new school district, or got a new job, the rest of the school or work atmosphere are more likely to accept that new person if they share the same beliefs and values. However, the school or work will be more likely to shun the new person away if they do not share the same beliefs and values as the rest of the school or
Although, some people wish to be themselves but they care too much what others think about
Life is a game filled with an abundance of opportunities and opinions. With opinions comes a set of laws governed and made by themselves, beliefs. Beliefs govern how you see the things around you, what you love, and the things you hate. Beliefs are a good thing to have, they give you a foundation of who you are and what you want to be, but beliefs could also be your demise blinding you from what is right in front of your face.
fear of being wrong and fear of being different. Even those who do have some
People aren't happy with who they are because they are afraid society will reject them because that is what they do now, if you are different to those who try to be like the others you will be destined to be the weird person people know or that isolated person that tries to be different to be cool or gain popularity. Society now a days forces you to be all the same:
Some people feel the need to change their character or attributes to fit into what they assume is the "cool" section of society. They don't know that by doing this they are actually hiding away their natural characteristics. This seems like a more plausible outlook on the situation because in this day and time people are more focused on how society sees them rather than focusing on
People tend to conform to what we as of now have deemed acceptable in our society. Girls especially may feel pressured to look or dress a specific way, wanting to be “beautiful” in the eyes of society. Every so often I will walk around and see people who all dress in similar fashion, or all wear the same brands as though the name alone will make them more noticeable. Some groups, though they are harder to find as people are starting to try and be individuals, do it to the point where they all really just look like clones of one another as shown in the picture. Girls who look different from the norm, such as ones who wear baggy clothing or have a different body type or even dyed hair tend to stand out among the crowds. They don’t necessarily
When everyone believes their opinions are true, it can lead to violence, discrimination, and self harm. It is understood humans as a species are afraid or tend to stray away from change or acceptance. We are afraid of what we do not understand thus creating a hostile environment for those who dare to be different.
It is better to express yourself and be different than to fit in and be indistinguishable from everyone else as it helps boost your confidence level and helps you evolve as an independent person. Individuality is a part of you, if you lose it, your personality and the way you think can change from you expressing yourself, to being mundane and monotone; just like other people.
People are constantly doing whatever it takes in order to impress the people around them. they create this fake image of a perfect life, and in all honesty that must be exhausting. A lot of people keep their opinions to themselves and only express themselves in ways that they know will be acceptable to society; they say what they know people will want to hear. Margo calls this the paper town, which is full of “ paper people living in their paper house… All the paper kids drinking beer some bum bought for them at the paper convenience store,” (57). I love the way John Green/Margo describes this. All these people are obsessed with their image, obsessed with having a certain look, owning the right clothes, obsessed “with the mania of owning things. All the things paper-thin and paper-frail, (57-58). I never been good with dealing with fake people, whether they are try to be deceitful or they are just attempting to fit in. I am not saying that I have never done this. We are all influenced while growing up, in the way we talk, act, dress, and activities we take part in, even me. But I have come to realize that not one person on earth has a perfect life, and if you look close enough you will see the wear and tear on buildings,
As I have worked in the service industry since I have been old enough to work, the art of people watching and people reading has become an activity I like to think I have mastered. At the moment, I work at a bar in Atlantic Station where people come to be seen. Because of my experiences in the service industry, Turner’s article has only further validated my belief that what we put on is more important to us than we think. As far as fashion goes, there are two types of people who exist. People who are wearing their outfits and those whose outfits are wearing them. I have noticed that women who are “wearing their outfits” so to speak, exude way more confidence than women whose outfits are “wearing them”. It may be the confidence, but it seems that these ‘confident’ women are usually wearing outfits that seem to be congruent with their personality. By that I mean wearing something they are genuinely comfortable in, almost with an air of “this outfit was made for me and no one else.” On the other hand, there are those women who look as if their clothes are holding them hostage. It is as if the clothes are not correctly communicating to the rest of society who they feel they really are. A perfect example of this is a woman who frequents my bar often. She is quite friendly and always willing
However, a lot of people today allow the latest trends to severely manipulate their style of living. These people can be classified as “bandwagons” or “trend-followers because they try to be someone they are not in order to fit into the current society. I don’t believe that these are good characteristics for an individual to be labeled as because since trends constantly change, so does the person. This means that a person has no personality and this can possibly affect them later on in life. For example, if you go to a restaurant that serves Korean Barbeque then visit that restaurant because you enjoy it, not because it happens to be the most popular dining option right now. What I am trying to say is that it is very important to be yourself because this is the method that you peers define the type of person you are. Being yourself is not very difficult to do and it can also be quite fun. Being yourself means that you are the sole decision maker in your life and you don’t receive any sort of influence from anyone else. Furthermore, Irish poet Oscar Wilde was once quoted saying, “Be yourself, everyone else is already taken.” This quote is one hundred percent true because if you are trying to be someone else then you are considered an imposture. The main point of this quote is, in order to maintain originality you have to be yourself. Being yourself is like being your own President of the United States; you are the one who makes the important decisions. The President of the United States always makes the critical decisions regarding the country and the world and by being yourself, you are like the Commander In-Chief. My advice to others is to take action and live life the way you wish and don’t allow the sellouts of our current society manipulate your style of
From the very beginning we are taught to fit in. In school we are taught that two plus two equals four and to color inside of the lines. We are told not to stray from the normal because once we do it becomes difficult for those around us to relate. It is then we realize that not only to we strive to fit in, but we also aim to be understood. Whether it is verbally, in writing, or through our actions there is a need in each and everyone of us to be understood by our family, friends, and even strangers. Every time we are misinterpreted, a thought goes off in our head, “If only they understood.” With misunderstanding comes the feeling of being judged. I think that’s what we really fear. Not being misunderstood but being judged for what we believe.
Imagine everyday of your life, knowing the fact that everywhere you go, everything you do is being observed and judged. Imagine walking into a store and having someone watch your every movement thinking that you’re going to steal an item, or reveal a bomb from under your clothes. Imagine being mocked and judged because you're "different".
