The Common Core Standards were developed in order to create a clear and consistent message of what students are expected to learn and know at the end of each grade level so educators and parents will know what they need to do in order to help them prepare to be career and/or college ready.

To emphasize how much Lawton M. Chiles Elementary value public and collaborative teaching a little more, it also included in its school improvement plan strategies for recruiting, developing, and maintaining effective teachers in the school. Lawton M. Chiles Elementary participates in the Site-based Internship Program and Pro-Teach Program from the University of Florida. Upon hiring new and beginning teachers, the school assigns a mentor teacher to each so that the mentor teacher, grade-level team, and administrators can provide adequate support and resources to these new teachers.

I currently work for West Point Public Schools, I will be starting my seventh year with in the district. During my time at West Point, I have been involved in several different roles. I have been a sixth grade teacher where I taught the lower level reading, and language arts classes. All of the sixth grade United States History, along with being the sixth grade special education case manager, and served as one of the upper elementary reading coaches along with being a special education behavior teacher.

The lack of educational benchmarks and standardization in the United States of America, USA is disjointed and subpar leaving students ill prepared to enter the workforce and college. As evidenced by the persistent problem of students graduating and passing required exit exams in high school; yet, they still needed remediation upon entry to college. The Common Core is good because it provides a set of age appropriate learning goals and sets a national high-quality academic standard for Math and English to prepare students for college and career readiness. In essence, the Common Core defines what a student should know and be able to do at different grade levels.

With these three features these will make a successful student not only in their K-12 years, but this will also be beneficial to the students in college and as they begin their careers in the work force. As teachers begin to change their ways of teaching to adjust to the common core standards it will create something fundamentally important in the schools system to create successful students. The Common Core Standards engage a standards-based education. The standards guide teachers to prepare students for what they are expected to learn to succeed in life. It is essential that teachers understand the expectations and implications of the standards, so teachers can help students achieve educational goals by designing specific educational plans that align with the core standards. Furthermore, tailoring the curriculum will help to build relevant skills students are argued to integrate in college and their future careers.

The organizations that wrote the common core standards were the national governors association and council of chief state school officials. The common core lets all school districts study the same thing at the same time, which enables the students that move from different sate allowing that students not to be left behind. The standards includes research, evidence based, aligned with college and work expectations, rigorous and internationally benchmarked. The standards were made so students were required knowing mostly English language arts and mathematics at the end of each grade, but the standards sets requirements for literacy in history, social studies, science and technical subjects. They thought if students needed to learn how to read, write, speak and listen they should know multiple subject to be ready for college. According to the common core standards students going to the next grade level must meet the specific grade standard.

I am currently in my 11th year of teaching at Sun Valley High School. I have been very fortunate that we have not had many major legal issues at my school while I’ve worked here. Many of the issues that arise come from students with special education requirements. Most times it is due to a student with a low grade and the teachers not following the SDI’s to the full extent. The few major issues we’ve had in my school have dealing with drugs or violence have been associated with a student having an IEP. These students have manifestation hearings to determine if it was their disability that caused the behavior. I was slightly involved in one of these cases, and with the vague wording in their legal document; I was amazed at how the

The Common Core State Standards are a state attempt to create strong educational standards. The standard are created to ensure that students in the country are learning and grasping the information that are given in the classrooms for them to succeed academically. The Common Core plan included governors and education commissioners form forty-eight states and the District of Columbia. They wanted to make sure the standards are relevant, logical and sequential. For content all subjects must have critical-thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. Some positive aspects of this policy is that it prepares our students for a competitive global jobs. It can provide national connections in education. Designed to shape the best standards so that all states will be taking a step ahead in education. These standards had been created after extensive research by professional educators for excellence in education. The CCS focus on what students expectations of learning, and achievements. Educators do not need to worry that the standards will make their jobs look redundant because they are in charge of creating lessons to teach their students the content and skills that the CCS demands. The teachers do not feel that the standards are one-size-fits-all. Some negative aspects of the policy are that is a program created by solely the government. The CCS is a program put together on idyllic situations in education by individuals who have subsidy and students ahead of the learning

Common Core was created due to the higher level of learning going on internationally. The focus of these standards are for the student to apply their knowledge and prepare for future careers. One main component is critical thinking and the ability to analyze information and solve complex problems with these skills. The new rigorous standards are used across the United States(Core Standards).

Presently I am a Special Education teacher working with children who have a wide range of disabilities. My class setting is integrated, which mean half of the class is general and the other half is special. My primary goal is to modify general education lesson plans to meet each student’s needs and abilities. These needs may include, but not limited to emotional, physical or cognitive disabilities, teaching basic literacy and life skills. I have an interest in this field because I feel with the proper help and assistant; students make positive changes in their academic and social life. Providing early intervention is essential when teaching kids with disabilities. One of the main reasons why I have made the decision to pursue a PhD in education, specialization in Special educator, is because I enjoy what I do and would like to make a difference. My ultimate goal is to keep making a difference by helping those that needed it and provide them with the proper resources to enhance their ability. I want to be an example to my children and have them see the end result of what happens when one desire to strive for the best and what they can accomplish. I want my children to see that with hard work, motivation, dedication, concentration, and having no limits that they will attain any goals they may set forth.

I am attending Concord College to further my education. After graduating with an Elementary Education Degree, I would like to teach in an elementary school in Southern West Virginia. Preferably, I would like to teach in a kindergarten environment. While teaching I plan to further my career with a Master’s degree. I would like to be able to reach those children that aren’t as fortunate as others. As a teacher I will not only teach the children, but they in turn, will teach me. Education is one of the most important aspects to the success of the country. It is important for everyone to feel a part of that success; therefore, I feel strongly about teaching students to succeed.
