Hurt, pain, physical and mental distraught are just a few words that victims of cyberbullying will describe how they felt. 52% of students in America are being cyberbullied, which is half of the American students. This can lead to loss of self-esteem, feelings of shame and anxiety, difficulty in learning, emotional and physical harm, and suicide. Cyberbullying is a huge problem in our society today. Cyberbullying is taking advantage of our free speech, but there are many solutions to stop it in our society.

Freedom of speech is an important issue and it is vital that we protect that freedom. Freedom of speech is protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution. But, I don’t think “our forefathers envisioned a world of smartphone cameras and social platforms” (WiredKids, Inc). In those days, “freedom of speech protected protestors seeking redress against their governments, not cyberbullies hiding behind their Facebook profile or Twitter stream to call out personal actions to cause political embarrassment for being human. Even a closed Facebook profile or a locked Twitter doesn’t offer much privacy.”(WiredKids, Inc). A post gets reposted or retweeted by someone without such privacy controls and your private post becomes public knowledge. Speech that might be considered protected by the First Amendment, becomes cyberbullying when it’s posted on a social media. According to the Cyberbullying Research Center:

Surprisingly, 17.5 percent of boys, and 21.3 percent of girls felt that even they have cyberbullied before. ( Doc A). Bullying has been a threat for a long time in schools and adding the new advances in technology such as cell phones, twitter and facebook bullying is now being done online and school learning is being affected. Schools should have the power to limit students’ online speech because the percent of boys and girls being cyberbullied is raising, teachers teaching ability is being affected, and students learning in class is being affected. While this definition is true, the meaning extends way beyond that. There are various ways a bully can target their victim. Dr. Martyn Wild said, “Cyberbullying is poised to turn into the biggest online concern, already affecting up to 35% of all children.” Many people do not realize the damage done by cyberbullying because it is not physical. In their study, Carter and Wilson (2015) state that out of 367 adolescent students, 337 of them have computers, that 79.1% of the student body in question have their own personal cell phone and that 81% have a Facebook. Cyber-bullying is an easily utilized method of harassment, and used throughout all age groups. Adolescents however, are the most likely to both participate and be a victim of cyber bullying.
