Hurricanes A hurricane is a low pressure system that is classified as a tropical storm with winds exceeding 74 mph. Hurricanes are found in the Atlantic Ocean; however, they are also found in other places but are classified under different names. In the northern Indian Ocean and in the Bay of Bengal these tropical storms are referred to as cyclones; yet, in the western Pacific Ocean these tropical storms are classified as typhoons. However, the hurricanes that impact the United States coast the greatest are the hurricanes that travel across the Atlantic Ocean. This means that peak hurricane season for Atlantic Ocean’s hurricanes are during the months of August to October. (Hurricanes, n.d.).

Hurricanes are fueled by the heat energy that is created due to the warm moist ocean. However, when the hurricane reaches more shallow waters along the coasts lines the sea level rises and may erode the coast line. When the hurricane reaches shore it pushes water on land causing flooding which is called a storm surge. The storm typically begins to die due to no longer being fueled by the warm moist ocean (Stillman, 2014) Hurricanes are extremely destructive and can be deadly due to their strength when they hit land. These storms are given a category one through five depending on their wind speed. A category one hurricane is the weakest while a category five hurricane is the strongest (Stillman, 2014). According to Weather Underground, the deadliest hurricane occurred in Galveston, Texas in 1900 which is called the Great Galveston Hurricane. This hurricane was classified as a category four hurricane during which approximately 8,000 people died (Hurricane and Tropical Cyclones, n.d.).
More recent hurricanes are given names such as Sandy, or Katrina. This is to help communicate important information about the storm between different stations. Since many different hurricanes can be occurring at once some showing more threat to land and individuals than others, it became much easier to give these storms short and distinctive
