Do you think hurricanes are nothing compared to tornadoes? The Hurricane of 1938 was a catastrophic disaster that New England was not prepared for. The New Englanders were just going about business as usual and once the storm hit without warning, no one was prepared. The hurricane caused very high waves, destruction of property, and flooding. To begin with, the waves caused by the hurricane jostling the waters were anywhere from 30 to 50 feet high. The waves were powerful enough to knock a house off its foundation and fast enough to catch a whole neighborhood by surprise. They also led to flooding and destruction of many houses and farms.
