McClain had been driving an 87-year-old back to her home in 1700 block of 18th St. W. when the heavy rain hit. Trying to stay safe, she followed a car in front of her onto 17th Avenue West since it had the same ground clearance. Though water ahead forced her to turn onto 3rd Street West and that is when she drove into the water, stopping her vehicle. “We had no idea it was that bad,” McClain states, “We really did not, not until we were in the middle of it.” Lawson, Seabrooks, and Wiggins were all hanging out at Lawson's house since the incoming storm had canceled all extracurricular activities. That is when Lawson's father had told the three football players about McClain's stuck vehicle and they all had pushed to her rescue. "I get on the phone with my husband and I'm like, 'Oh my god, you're going to have to get here right now,'" McClain says. "I said, 'We're going to have to swim for

Once upon a time there were three brothers. The three of them moved out of their parent’s house and were in Florida looking to buy land to build a house and start a family. When looking for land a native Floridian told them they should be careful where they build their house because of the many hurricanes that Florida gets. The oldest brother had a macho attitude and said, “Hurricanes don’t scare me.” He picked a spot on the beach and built a house. The middle brother had an invulnerable and impulsive attitude, and said, “Hurricane, Smurricane.” He picked a spot in the Florida Keys and built his house quickly using the cheapest material he could find. The youngest brother was a careful person. He cared deeply for the safety of his family and
According to the test, “Hurricane Hugo was a massive Category Four hurricane that caused extensive damage to U.S. territory in the Caribbean and to the U.S. mainland, particularly in the state of South and North Carolina” (p.88). It ranked as the top 10 most costly disaster in the United States (FEMA). All of Caribbean, South and North Carolina suffered the huge ravages from Hurricane Hugo. However, the different response operations and acts done by the public and three levels of governments were quite different in three areas, which caused different results and impacts.
Throughout the article we hear from the people who knew Thomas, who went through the tornado, and they talk of how after the tornado they could pound boards as a way of coping, ““That was easier,” said assistant coach Brian Benning. “This year it’s all inside of you.”” You can hear the pain in their voices when they speak of this football coach who meant so much to a small
One of the inmates knew a guy who was a fisher so he called them up and asked them if they could help. There are a lot of different theories on what happened but they all have evidence to
I left our home at 1501 Roosevelt ave unit K5 in Carteret N.J.. It was downpouring rain throughout the drive towards the accident location. I had my windshield wipers switching between the highest and second highest setting. Visibility looked to be a half a mile on a straight away. There was no incidents of hydroplaning before my accident that I could feel. As I turn onto Route 1&9 heading south-west. I was in the left lane going 40-45 mph and could see the red light in the distance. With about 20-30 seconds left until I reach the red light. I begin to apply the brakes. Hydroplaning ensues and I panic, so I apply
First, the “un-engineered” dam violated two laws; second, Pittston knew the dam was not safe; third, Pittston did not have a warning system in place to alert residents in case of disaster; fourth, by convincing the deputies to discontinue their warning efforts, Pittston negated the last-ditch effort that could have saved 125 people (Nugent 183). The most tragic finding from the multiple investigations and studies is that Pittston could have built a safe dam for less than 200,000 thousand dollars, an amount that was a mere “one-half of one percent of its 1971 profits” (Nugent 184), a small sacrifice that could have saved many lives. Pittston’s culpability lies in its reckless greed. One of saddest reminders of the horror of Pittston’s wanton disregard is a tombstone that reads: “This Tiny Trio / Boy-Girl-Boy / Who were the Victims of the Feb. 26, 1972 Buffalo Creek Disaster are unknown to us by name but to Our Heavenly Father they are known as three little angels” (Stern 47). The article Remembering Buffalo Creek, 40 Years Later commemorates the tragedy saying: “We have a responsibility to teach each future generation what happened and why, so that they cannot only reverently remember but make certain that history does not repeat itself” (1). One can hope all companies have this etched in their minds and hearts and souls when they think of sacrificing safety for a

I have always found the ocean to be a very intriguing part of the Earth. There are infinitely many discoveries that have yet to be made about it. My fascination with the ocean sparked the idea to do my class paper on hurricanes and what they are along with their effects. I remember hearing about all the damages from Hurricane Katrina after it hit the coast near New Orleans. The only information I really know about them is what is briefly covered on the news. I thought it would be interesting to discover the true effects they can have on not only people that endure them, but also the environment as it gets ripped to shreds by the plethora of winds and water.
