The Hunt For Red October is a film directed by John McTiernan and produced by Mace Neufield and Jerry Sherlock. The movie is based on the novel of the same name, which was written by Tom Clancy. The film is about how CIA analyst Jack Ryan, played by Alec Baldwin, must prove that the rogue Soviet Naval Captain, Marko Ramius, played by Sean Connery, is not planning an attack on the United States and that his intentions are truly different. The film is set during the Cold War, in which tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union are high. This adds to the overall suspense of the movie. They only see the plot and the characters and call it good. Yet, they forget to recognize the other aspects of the film. In this film, I’ve noticed quite a bit of literary aspects of the picture. The plot of the movie is what makes the movie what it is, however there are more ideas and things that go into the plot. The first thing that I noticed was the realistic nature of the plot. A plot like this wouldn’t work in a different time period but with it being set during the Cold War, it makes sense, however, the nature of the characters is one that would make one question it. When we look back at history and the cold war, we see that in that time period, there was a lot of patriotism on both sides and how very close we were to nuclear war. In this case, I find it a bit weird that Marko Ramius wanted to go to the United States. Maybe he was against the ideology of the Soviet Union, but even then it is a bit weird. What the plot does is it leaves everything resolved, just what a plot should do. The dialogue in the film can be viewed as realistic due to the nature of the plot, causing one to be confused at times due to topics of discussion involving the submarines or anything along the subject line.
