Humanity is ever so much more complicated than one could have ever imagined. Humans can thrive on change, but ultimately look for something to declare as home. In search of this home people travel long distances and risk everything they have. When an American contemplates the word immigrant, one imagines the countless people from Mexico crossing into our country or the refugees that hope to make this country their home. What eludes most of us, however, is the reality that most people were, at one point, immigrants to this country and that our forefathers came here exactly the same as refugees come today. What is brought to mind when I hear the word immigrant is hope and perseverance. I remember the countless people who have traveled here

America as we know it today has been shaped by immigrants. It can be argued that America shapes immigrants as well. It is a nation that people, nationalist or foreign-born, desire to assimilate partially or fully into. According to a New York University professor, “Immigration, however, played a key role not only in making America’s development possible but also in shaping the basic nature of the society” (Diner, p. 2). It is a nation built on this idea of the “American dream” which varies depending on the person. However, it is something that holds steadily in an immigrant’s mind that is possible to achieve. America’s past, present and certainly future will be formed by immigrants, and once they get here America will coincidentally form their being as well.

The first thing to remember, she states when immigrants come to American they come to better themselves and their families lives. Immigrants are sometimes the providers for their family back home. That is one of responsibilities they take on. She considers, immigrants should contribute to the American society so why can’t they continue to live in the United States. Furthermore, she accepts the truth as though anyone should receive a handout, but they should acquire the proper documentation to become a citizen of America. The United States of America is a country with a growing population. The population has always been growing, ever since the welcoming of new comers to the United States. Some people see these immigrants as beneficial to the American people and some see them as a threat to the Americans. Respectively, give good reasons, and some do not.To begin, I will present to you two written pieces. The first one will be by former president Bill Clinton, in how immigration benefits America. This writing piece begins with an introduction to the issue, diversity and immigration. Clinton addresses the American people by claiming, “If both citizens and immigrants do their part[s], [America] will grow even stronger in the new global information economy”. Clinton then gives some major reasons to his claim. The first one is in how the cooperation of citizens is necessary in order to be united with the immigrants and be strong. The second point Clinton wants to show how immigrants are good for America, by suggesting that they energize the American culture and renewing American values. Clinton then gives evidence in how this is true by introducing the Gibson family and counter augmenting the fact that immigrants take more than they give. Clinton then comes to another point by suggesting that union is only possible if the American citizens share the nation. Clinton then continues to show what some responsibilities of the American citizens are by reminding them of the Declaration of independence

As a black man in Maycomb, Tom Robinson receives a lot of negativity from the white folks in town during his trial. In reality, Tom Robinson is a very kind person who did work for Mayella Ewell because “[he] was glad to do it, Mr. Ewell didn’t seem to help [Mayella] none, and neither did the chillun, and [he] knowed [Mayella] didn’t have no nickels to spare.” (256) Tom Robinson, holding quite a demanding job, also wanted to help out Mayella for free in such a crisis because he felt like she has no one else to help her. Like a mockingbird who sings for sheer goodness, Tom helped Mayella because he felt bad for her, only to be shot like a mockingbird, “seventeen bullet holes in him” (315). In Joe Nocera’s article, “Let’s Start Paying College Athletes”, he argues that college athletes should be paid for playing sports. Nocera begins his article by providing an example of how some athletes will receive money that is perfectly fine while other athletes cannot accept any money or else that player will be in violation of NCAA rules. It’s evident that there are large amounts of money involved in the college sports. Top college coaches can make as much or more than professional coaches. Together with men’s basketball, College football have become huge commercial enterprises generating huge amounts of annual revenue (Nocera, 2011).

What does it mean to be an American? It matters that I am free. Conversely, when I grow up I can pick the job I want, what shift to work, and to have a good education. It signify that I can say “The Pledge of Allegiance” and that I can vote for the President, my county clerk, and the Mayor. Accordingly, means most of all to be free and to be proud that I live in the United States of America. I also think it means to go beyond your place of birth or the documents you have, back to when throngs of Irish, Italian and Eastern Europeans crossed the Atlantic Ocean in search of a better life, no papers asked. President Barack Obama said “My fellow Americans, we are and always will be a nation of immigrants. We were strangers once, too.”, during his speech on national immigration.What Barack Obama means by this is that the foundation of the United States is immigration and the pursuit for a better life for us and our families. I think that a lot of people get confused when the word immigrant is brought up. The definition of an immigrant is, a person who comes to live permanently in another country. There is also illegal immigration, but regardless immigration affects many lives and causes many issues in politics.

“Above all, we must stand shoulder to shoulder, not asking as to the ancestry or creed of our comrades [immigrants], but only demanding that they be in very truth Americans, and that we all work together, heart, hand, and head, for the honor and the greatness of our common country (6).”

In the speech, The “Spirit Of Liberty” Judge Learned Hand mentions that “Some of us have chosen America as the land of our adoption…” meaning that some of us purposely chose this country for a reason. He also mentions that immigrants are “...a group of those who had the courage to break from the past and brave the dangers and the loneliness of a strange land”. I agree with what Judge Learned Hand describes because people migrate from their country to a complete different location in order to receive better opportunity, not knowing the obstacles that are to come their

He comprehends that all American citizens, whether they were born in America or not, did in fact come from elsewhere. Immigrants are what make up America, and  had brought a plethora of culture and heritage to give to the country. They toiled in the fields, worked long hours in the factories, and build up the government. They had hoped for a better life, and were willing to put everything on the line in order to achieve their dreams. This is not any different from the Lithuanian Americans, as they had seen a drastic change from their home in the old country. They endured many hardships within America as they opened schools and found jobs. Without immigrants, the United States of America would never be the same, it may not of existed in the first place. And if America limites who can and cannot enter the country, they will be limiting their ability to build their culture up, and won’t be able to accept all, no matter their families’

Even the natives came from somewhere else, originally. All of the people who come to this country come for freedom, or for some product of that extraordinary, illusory condition. Murder is the unlawful killing of another human being with an intentional or criminal intent. In today's world, terrible crimes are being committed daily. Many believe that these criminals deserve one fate: death. Capital punishment, the death penalty, is the maximum sentence used in punishing people who kill another human being - and is a very controversial method of punishment.

Statistics indicate that forty million citizens, or 13% of the entire U.S. population, are foreign born. I am one of these forty million. Unfortunately, discussions about immigration have come to revolve around curtailment, rather than about immigrants themselves. Presidential candidate Donald Trump has risen to fame by painting immigrants as “murderers, thieves, and rapists.” Trump’s popularity signifies a radical shift from the time in which the words, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free... I lift my lamp beside the golden door,” were boldly inscribed onto the Statue of Liberty. Immigrants are no longer seen as people, but as a pathology. Even discussions about the benefits of immigration aren’t about immigrants themselves, but about what immigration can do for the national economy. As if an immigrant's value to society can only be measured in terms of capital.

The United States of America has long been known as an immigrant’s country. It is a melting pot of all different races, ethnicities, and nationalities. However, the time elapsed between the foundation of America and now has led to the development of the American identity. American nationalism has changed the scope and parameters of who is truly “American,” and who is welcomed in America. The United States is no longer a country of immigrants, it is a country filled with citizens of diverse heritage, but they all identify as an American. This poses a problem for those who still wish to immigrate to America. It is still described as a place where there is a possibility of an “American Dream,” and where anyone can become anything.
