Humanities Nebraska Jordan Raszler The nonprofit organization that is of interest to me is Humanities Nebraska. I have been very passionate about humanities since I volunteered for Heartland Family Services in high school. Humanities Nebraska has a lot of history within the state, a strong mission statement, several programs, a large and dedicated staff, major contributions to Nebraska, goals for the future, and financial information that deems them worthy of a grant. During my research of Humanities Nebraska, I have become more and more impressed by their organization and all they do for the state of Nebraska. Brief History Nebraska Humanities Council was established in 1973 – later renamed to be Humanities Nebraska (2013). After speaking …show more content…
Humanities Nebraska offers opportunities with the goal of attracting those with an interest in Nebraska history and culture. By doing this, they encourage and enhance both personal and public life. The Humanities Nebraska website defines humanities in a lengthy description of all aspects it encompasses. A simple translation of their definition is as follows: “The humanities are how we explore who we are collectively, and individually, and what it means to be human through reading, learning, thinking, questioning, and discussing” (“Humanities Nebraska,” …show more content…
This upholds the same aspect of Humanities Nebraska’s mission statement. This event is a partnership with Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and state humanities councils nationwide (“Humanities Nebraska,” 2013). The changing exhibitions bring national history and culture to small communities within Nebraska. These exhibitions are displayed in libraries, museums, and other local organizations. Humanities Nebraska supports these exhibits by supplying events based on these traveling exhibitions (“Humanities Nebraska,” 2013). Their partnership is what makes these events memorable for the community and successful for the nonprofit organization. One more the many events Humanities Nebraska supports is the Nebraska Book Festival. “The Nebraska Book Festival is presented annually by the Nebraska Center for the Book, Humanities Nebraska, Nebraska Library Commission and University of Nebraska at Omaha with support from the Nebraska Cultural Endowment” (“Humanities Nebraska,” 2013). This event is free to the public, especially those who wish to meet the latest local authors in the area. The Nebraska Book Festival is profound for kids, parents, and
Humanities are required for the development of an individual’s creativity and expression, without these skills our society would be monotonous and bland. Our nation was built on the ideals of freedom and democracy, and although math and science help us to progress economically and technologically, they don’t help individuals to express themselves to be effectively represented by our government.
Bellevue is a town located in close proximity to Nashville, Tennessee. The town of Bellevue is famous for Red Caboose Park, where thousands of visitors come to spend their leisure time. Other nearby places that capture the interest of visitors are Brentwood. It is a place where council meetings are held by the government. A top attraction for visitors here is the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. It is considered the home of country music. It has over 2.5 million artifacts spread over two floors of exhibition space. By now you must be feeling quite hungry, so just step into Monell's Dining & Catering and dig into their skillet fried chicken and corn pudding so your tummy will be sated. There are many hotels and rentals around here, some
Along the borders of Mercer, Beaver, and Butler county you will find a county that contains many unique characteristics. This county is known as Lawrence County. The county as a whole houses 88,000 people. The counties seat, New Castle, alone houses 22,000 of those people.
Growing up in the city of Detroit then moving out to the Suburbs of West Bloomfield is a huge change. In Detroit I became accustomed to my environment. For the most part we were black. Racial issues didn't come up much because of this. While I understood racism and knew that Blacks were a minority throughout the country. I had never felt what it really felt like to be a minority.
Poverty plagues the entire nation. People assume that the worst of poverty is in the midst of heavily populated areas such as New York or California. What they don’t realize is that poverty rates in Grand Forks are worse than the average poverty rates in the entire nation. And it isn’t just a slight increase, poverty rates in Grand Forks County are 150% worse than the national average. The poverty rates are ridiculous, yet there are only a few articles in the Grand Forks Herald that actually focus on poverty. I researched through the Grand Forks Herald database and came up with less than ten articles in the past 5 years that focused on poverty in the area. That’s a maximum of ten articles in 1,825 days. This report focuses on the effects that

The state named "Oklahoma" is named after a Muskogean Indian word, which originated from the words oklah homma, which translates to English and means red people. During the early 1800's to 1900's, Oklahoma developed greatly. From the first Native Americans, to the first white Americans, they all migrated west for different reasons, until Oklahoma became a state. When they developed a society, their economic practices, which are still used today, shaped the future of Oklahoma.
Throughout the streets of Portland stands the walls of a house that saw some of North Dakota’s most historical events. Built in 1880, John E. Fladeland was able to call this house his home. Fladeland was born in Winona, Minnesota in 1861 and moved to Portland, North Dakota as a young adult where he bought Forbes and Soldahl drug stores and managed the move theatre in town. After moving to North Dakota, the pharmacist ended up owning drug stores in Sutton, Luverne, and Bottineau.
Albritton, T. J. (2012). Educating our own: The historical legacy of HBCUs and their relevance for educating a new generation of leaders.
I wish I could say it still surprises me when I mentioned to people that I attended an HBCU (Historically Black College/University), some of them have no idea they exist. Often, it turns into a conversation starter, which usually evolves into a meaningful educational moment about the history of HBCU’s. However, occasionally I find myself becoming frustrated when ask the question “why” in a way that questions the validity and or need for HBCU’s in 2016. As a student at Hampton University I did not fully realize the impact it would have on me, but looking back, it is clear to me that those experiences have shaped who I’ve grown into today, and strongly influence to my desire to pursue a career in environmental science education.
I believe humanities is more than just "the study of human beings by culture and the arts". I believe humanities is the process of how human beings have advanced rapidly in the sense of how information is gained and delivered to the mind culturally. Humanities shows that time is of the essence and that with time things are evolving to keep up with modernization and to always have something "original" available, to seem different or culturally of the world. I believe that humanities have most defiantly made me aware that I am capable of thinking deeper into the meaning of certain information I have received in my lifetime or even asking questions that I thought could not have an answer. Humanities has made me see life in a different way and has made me take action in changing some of the habits I have been accustomed throughout my lifetime to such as my diet, habits, and believing information that has been a lie all along. I am so grateful that I took this course this year because it has made me eager to become a more open-minded, healthier, woke, individual and I hope to share information that I have researched myself to make a difference in my

Museums serve as a way to connect with the public on a large scale, and the knowledge held within exhibits can be a fruitful experience for those who choose to visit these institutions. Experiencing all that a museum has to offer, no matter how well intentioned, can at times be confusing and overwhelming to the individuals visiting the site. The Smithsonian’s Museum of the American Indian dedicates itself to Native Americans in North and South America, and worked tirelessly with varying tribes to create a new standard. Some visitors and scholars found their work to be successful in design and approach while others found it to be lacking in execution. This institution does not approach Native American history in a familiar fashion; however it does cover an expansive period of time, and produces a great amount of detail while generating powerful emotions.
According to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, what are ten ways we can build support for the humanities?
