As a Human Service worker serving diverse clients I might have a difficult time following these two statements, based on my own understanding of my own personal values I’ve explored in the previous module. In understanding my culture and background as a US citizen I might have an issue with the way someone disciplines their child based on their cultural background. Other countries have no problem choosing corporal punishment as that is all they know. When coming to this country things are very different. “All consultations between human service professionals are kept confidential unless to do so would result in harm to clients or communities”-Kenyon 1999, pg.69

I will also find it very gratifying that, beyond growing in my practice that I can provide a valuable service by meeting community needs by being able to service a diverse population. Strategies I would use to work well with clients whose values /ethics are very different from mine would be to explains for parents that discipline teaches a child the difference between acceptable and unacceptable behavior. Teaching them positive force focusing on what a child is allowed to do, whereas the goal of punishment is to stop unacceptable behavior. Giving them the difference between discipline versus physical abuse so that they are still able to parent and discipline but not be judge by the choices they make to do so. As my role in the school system has progressed I have come to understand those who come from various countries and how they punish their children. My school is filled with a variety of immigrants not just the parents but the children. I could not understand how and why a parent could punish their child in such harsh ways but In time I’ve come to accept their culture is different. My role is to let them know I understand but inform them of the new laws they will come across. “Human service professionals respect the integrity and welfare of the clients at all time. Each client is treated with respect, acceptance, and dignity” -Kenyon 1999, pg.63. This came with time but I am still working on it as every school year I am faced with a new
As a human service worker some basic skill that I would assist a client would be helping them to be more self-sufficient through learning new skills. I would also recommend them to different resource that would assist them as they work to overcome setbacks in life. I chose to do a research paper over a social and human service assistant because it matched my ASVAB code perfectly. My ASVAB code was SCE which stands for social, conventional, and enterprising. Being a social and human service assistant has so many requirements in not only educational preparation and personal qualities but also in the daily expectations for this career. Before the United States became a country, unemployment and poverty was a huge problem with society's problem.
I first learned how to become more culturally responsive and respectful while working as a Child Protective Services caseworker. I had to learn about my client’s culture and beliefs before being able to build a rapport with them. I was able to help multiple families in overcoming a very difficult situation in their life that caused me to become involved. I had to seek out ways on how to help those families all while not placing values held by me onto them.

My main reason for applying to the Simmons School of Social Work is that it is an accredited university with an excellent reputation as an educational institution and offers an MSW program that is predominantly online. I attended Thomas Edison State University online and earned my bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.9. Once I made the decision to continue my education, I searched for MSW programs that were available online with CSWE accreditation in compliance with New Jersey State social work licensure. I found that Simmons’s specialized program in clinical social work is well suited for my educational needs.
I once read in a textbook, "Human service work must always start from a solid base of appropriate attitudes and values" (Mandell & Schram 2012, p. 111). This particular book lists several attitudes and values a human service worker should render. Qualities such as; Patience, self-awareness, empathy, capacity to deal and take risk, just to name a few. I agree with the list in its entirety; however, I know as a human service worker I will not master the list in its entirety. After reviewing the attitudes and values, I deem that the most important values and attitudes for effective human services professionals are self-awareness, open-mindedness, skepticism, rejection of stereotypes, humor, and a light touch.

MSSW Professional Statement by Jessica L. Luttrell for possible fall 2017 admission to the MSSW Program with University of Tennessee’s College of Social Work Motivation for social service and/or social change, social work education, and a career in the profession. Positively benefiting the lives of others and helping them achieve the best quality of life is what motivates me to become a social worker. Being able to improve the lives of the indigent and less fortunate has always been something I have strived to do, but only in a personal manner. In the summer of 2012, I decided to go back to school to finish my degree once I realized how much I connected in my psychology classes.
In the Human Service Profession, we are commonly tasked with helping clients who face a multitude of issues and working with these clients to come up with and implement intervention plans to address these issues. Here I will work with a client named Teresa, addressing the current issue she is facing, the barriers keeping her from resolving this issue, and implement an intervention plan to help her to ultimately overcome this issue like she has already overcome so many other issues, so she can continue to grow as an individual, and as a mother.
My passion for helping the vulnerable is one reason I ‘am inspired to become a social worker. I also want to be available to provide support to those who have nowhere else to turn. My experience in social work has taught me to celebrate the small victories towards positive changes.
