Human nature is the general psychological characteristics, feelings, and behavioral traits of humankind. Human nature is a major theme in the novel, Of Mice and Men. The author John Steinbeck portrays the wants and desires of the human nature through the thoughts, actions, and words of the characters. Steinbeck sees the truth about human nature hidden beneath the lies. The lies about a perfect American dream is an example of how human nature is cruel. Steinbeck’s relevance in themes, characters and figurative language to indicate the deep cruelty of the human nature. The American dream is formed upon perfection; however, the American dream is later destroyed by reality and by the predatory nature of human existence. As the readers, we can see the predatory nature through the characters eyes. We see that all the characters at one point or another feel loneliness and isolation. Isolation takes a major impact on all the characters of the book. Steinbeck makes it evident that people require the friendship and love of other people so survive in the harsh and cruel world. For example, Lennie has George for a companion. Candy has his dog, and Curley has his wife; however, even though some of the characters may not have a mutual feeling towards one another they all require each other. The characters know that in the reality of the human nature you can not survive isolated. Crooks, an african american stable guy in the novel confides, “Maybe you can see now. You got George. You know he’s goin’ come back. S’pose you couldn’t go into the bunkhouse and play rummy ‘cause you was black. How’d you like that? S’pose you had to sit out there an’ read books. Sure you could play
