American novels are meant to capture the “American life”. In famous American novels such as Huck Finn by Mark Twain, and Unvanquished by William Faulkner, the novels capture the lifestyle and the real life tribulations of the African American slave in the south. Jim in Huck Finn represents the reality of the African American pre Civil War while Ringo from Unvanquished represents the theoretical aspirations on how African Americans should be in America. As a whole, they represent the reality of the African American slave prior to the Civil War, and represent how African American should be once free. Traditional values started to evaporate while new traditional and morals took the south in a new direction. One of the things that started to change, in which readers recognized in Unvanquished, is the way Ringo, and African American, was treated. To start off he was not a slave, his best friend that he considered his brother was white, and he was never treated as person that was inferior. In the mists of the Civil War, in America, slavery was fading away and slaves were becoming free. Ringo in Unvanquished represents what theoretical progress the slave should make once the Civil War is over. Ringo adopted the white southern values; he has also engrossed himself in the community, which allows for peace and harmony to ensue. Ringo is the example of the progress that Jim and many other slaves have struggled to achieve. Having Ringo as a part of the community, it depicts a South that has the ability to have blacks and white coincide within the same community. The progress that Ringo has made within the community is not quite realistic; given the soul reason of the Civil War was over slavery. However, the progress on which Ringo represents is what Jim and other slaves live
