The novel begins in a small riverfront town named St. Petersburg. The main character, Huckleberry Finn, starts off the novel living with the Widow Douglas and Mrs. Watson. Huckleberry Finn despises living with the Widow Douglas and Mrs. Watson, and would much rather go back to his old way of life. They constantly teach him better manners, and overall civilize him to their way of life. We soon learn that even though Huck doesn’t like his new life, but it is a lot better than his old one because he has a drunken/abusive father. I believe deep down that Huck is grateful for what the women are trying to do, and is trying to change for them. Jim, one of Mrs. Watson’s slaves, is
He has a father who is abusive as well as an alcoholic, which is why two older ladies by the names of Miss. Watson and Widow Douglas watch over and care for him. The concept of a journey to freedom is portrayed through Huck due to him leaving home as a young boy and seeking for independence. In chapter eleven, Huck dresses up as a girl to go steal food and other items from a home for Jim and himself. “My mother’s down sick, and out of money and everything…” (62). Huck lied to a woman just to steal things from her home to survive because he was running away to become free. "It didn't take me long, though, to make up my mind that these liars warn't no kings nor dukes at all..." (40). This is ironic because Huck is noticing that the King and the Duke are con men and liars, but Huck himself is just like them because he lies to people all the time to better himself and get to freedom. Huck has to go through many disadvantages as well as Jim, on their journey to
Jim is a runaway slave. He lived on Jackson’s island across the river from where the community he was originally at. By being a runaway slave, Jim is breaking the law. He is owned by another human, Miss Watson. Jim is considered the legal material property of another person. Huck rejects this legal law, and agrees to help Jim break the law by escaping. Huck is shocked at himself for doing this and even believes he will go to hell for his actions. But Huck decides to choose friendship over what society tells him to do. When Huck and Jim are on the adventure down the Mississippi, their friendship grows stronger and stronger. They depend on each other to survive. Huck attempts to turn in Jim. When Huck and Jim came to the shore by a town. Huck gets off and looks for someone to report Jim. However, Huck runs into some white people wanting to capture runaway slaves. They Huck if he had any others in the boat with him. Huck get scared for Jim and told them that there was his mom, dad and sister in the boat and they all had small pox. By doing this, Huck puts his heart ahead of his head. Huck and Jim returns to St. Petersburg. Jim gets to be free, although Huck doesn’t realize that. Huck saw Jim in a building thinking that Jim was now a slave that couldn’t leave the plantation. So he got Tom Sawyer and then Tom wanted to plan out a way to get Jim out. The plan that Tom had was ridiculous because they could just walk in and take Jim away. Huck tried to point that out to Tom but, as stubborn as Tom is, they did Tom’s plan. A while later, they finally got Jim
Huckleberry’s life is changed and influenced by Tom Sawyer, the widow, his father, Miss Watson, and Jim. Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry’s best friend, is a wild imagination often caused trouble for him and others. Throughout the book, Huck questions what he is doing, and wonders if Tom would do the same. He almost always decides Tom would agree with his decisions and be on his side. When Huck’s life completely turns around, he receives thousands of dollars and a place to stay with a widow from town.
As the book starts, Huck introduces himself by stating about his character in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. He opens the book by saying what a great book it is. Being the narrator, Huck explains that Mark Twain, author, told the truth in Tom Sawyer, which was to expose the racial discrimination against African Americans.
In chapter one, the first person narrator, Huckleberry Finn, introduces himself and talks to the readers about his appearance in the book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. He then summarizes how that book ends, where is that he and his pal Tom found gold that robbers had hidden in a cave. Huck lives with the Widow Douglas who wants him to be civilized and respectable, which Huck doesn't like. The widow tries to conform Huck to religion. The widow lives with her sister Miss Watson who tries to teach Huck spell. Tom appears outside Huck's window that night and meows, and climbs out of his bedroom window and sneak away with Tom. In chapter two, Huck and Tom are trying to sneak away from the house. They come across Miss Watson's slave,
After Huckleberry Finn and Jim have been on the river in hopes of finding Cairo for a couple of days, Huck stops on shore to get some berries, but as he pulls the canoe onto land, out of nowhere comes “a couple of men tearing up the path as tight as they could foot it” (95). The two men claim to be the Duke of Bridgewater and the son of King Louis XVI and they are getting chased by a mob of townspeople and beg Huck to let them onto the canoe so they could escape. This encounter leads to many events that take Jim and Huck away from their quest for freedom. At one point, Huck and Jim finally have an opportunity to get away from the duke and the king, so the boys cut the canoe loose and start paddling down the Mississippi River but when Huckleberry turns around, he sees the two royalties “just a-laying to their oars and making their skiff hum!” (163). Even though they do not escape the hands of the frauds at this point in the novel, Huck sees both the King and the Duke tarred and feathered in chapter twenty- eight and he finally is relieved that he will never have to bother with those two men
Huck, unlike Tom, is gifted with a better conscience and quickly learns his lesson after he sees how it makes Jim feel but that takes a while. They play many evil tricks on him and they make Jims escapement from the farmers shed a game. After a while and a few incidents
Huck Finn decides to go back to the Widow Douglas even after being offered to be in Tom Sawyer’s “band of robbers”, which characterizes Huck as a person who can make good decisions. Even though Huck decides to go back to the Widow Douglas, as soon as he returns, he begins complaining about the Widow’s way of civilizing him. “She put me in them new clothes again, and I couldn’t do
